Been skunked recently?  It could be worse.  Ernest Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea" starts with the following sentence: "He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish."

The good news is that the old man finally caught a big marlin on Day 85.  The bad news is that the marlin got eaten by sharks.  If you haven't read this story, read it.

You have no idea how close to reality that is inside Puget Sound lately, except its seals.  Same outcome...ask the Hansville Point No Point fishermen.  It's one thing in a PB, quite another in a kayak...

My copy is dog eared and worn.  The price of being a well loved tome.

That's  my favorite short story and has been since I was a kid. I keep two copies, one old one that no one other than me touches and a newer one that I loan out (and therefore have to replace) often. I've probably read it dozens of times over the last few decades.  ;D

“What kind of a hand is that,' he said. 'Cramp then if you want. Make yourself into a claw. It will do you no good.”

This triggers a very painful flashback. Both of my hands cramped so bad that they were not functioning well. I was lucky to get a grip on the fish for the photo op. I don't think that I would have been able to do it without help.

Im not even sure that I would want to got through that again.

That's probably my favorite book. Umm, spoiler alert on the ending much?

I went out on the lake in the storm. Three hours for one trout felt a bit like being skunked. But it did make for a very good breakfast.

Hahahaha.  I need to fish with you.  I feel that way every time I fish.
Kayaking without wearing a PFD is like drunk driving.  You can get away with it for a while, but eventually someone dies.
