Should I name my kayak? The reason why I'm asking is that I bought a VHF Radio Cobra MRHH600 and I'm supposed to program it with the name of my vessel. Is this a common thing for kayaks? Is it bad luck if I don't name it?

Take that radio back. Cobras are shit.

Get a Standard Horizon or look for a good used i-com.

The i-com M-88 is the best form factor. Mil-spec, battery charge lasts a full weekend, 5w transmit, tough as nails. Plenty of parts and great service.

The first time that Cobra gets wet you might as well wipe your butt with the cash you spent and flush it. There are probably plenty of cheap rip cord options for parachutes...but can you count on them to do the job they are designed to do when you need them to do it?

I currently have 3 used m-88's. No problems whatsoever. With the Coast Guard not being paid, now is probably a good time to shop the used market.

I'm actually going to move towards the I-Com myself.  I have had mixed results with the two Standard Horizon units I have been using, and don't find the repair techs too helpful either.   :-\

The older Cobra units seemed to be bulletproof, not sure what the newer ones are like.

I-Com seems to be the best units out there, but you gotta pay to play.

It's funny that you mention it because I had an incident on my first outing with the Cobra. I clipped it to my PFD, and I bent over while I was standing on a dock covered in bird poop. The clip failed, and sure enough, it landed face first into a fresh wet pile of bird shit. Sigh...

If you bend over and your radio lets loose you're definitely not doing it right. Ditch the factory clip and run 220lb tuna cord through the tether to a Scotty clip.

You could name your yak if you want to, I guess. If all you need is a call sign for radio purposes, stick with something simple. Made the decision  years ago that  if I ever  got in trouble I was going to identify as Kayak Whiskey Romeo (my handle here, WR).
Why so many odd typos ? You try typing on 6 mm virtual keys with 26 mm thumbs....

Just call it "ram-1" since you'll probably be getting more in the future.

I just got two Icom M-36's, just out of the box this week and am still learning how to use them. I had a couple of Standard Horizons which were great for the first couple of years and then just turned up with endless problems to the point of  "recycling" them out of frustration.
