I decided to give the coastal fish a break and stay close to home this weekend.  Besides, I wanted to check out the action on the Big C.  Lots of chores to do, so put a limit of 11:00AM on my fishing.

Headed out well past sunrise (Fall Salmon only bite before or after the sun hits the water)
Trolled the bottom in ~50' of water with an 8oz sinker (Everyone knows it takes at least 12oz and this stretch of the river is best fished on the hook with wobblers)
Used plug cut herring (In spite of this being a hardware fishery)
Trolled from a paddle kayak (Though there seems to be this belief that you can't)
Left the flasher off (In spite of the fact that this is what brings salmon to your bait...)
Wasn't pulling a Pro-Troll/Brads combo (Even though everyone knows this is the only thing that will catch Columbia Salmon)

I'm sure that there were several other things I did wrong, but it didn't seem to matter.

The old adage is true folks.  You can't catch fish unless you have a hook in the water.  And in the end, the best technique for a given day is the one that put a fish in your kayak.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.  --Mark Twain

Nice fish! Did you paddle slower since you were using less weight and no flasher?

Thanks! I was at the mercy of the depth and current.  At times I was going 3MPH at other times it was .8.  Speed was just enough to keep my herring spinning.

I spent the 1st half of the morning fishing pulls.  Once the sun was fully on the water I started dragging bottom with a fair amount of scope.  Didn't see any other fish landed this morning but I heard of a few.

Nice Spot! The numbers on the Columbia over Bonnie have been pretty steady. Glad a paddler had good luck!

Congrats - that is quite a feat catching a fish in the dead zone. I think it's because you plug-cut your herring instead of running it whole; that must be the "fancy trick" this year!  ;) ha ha

BTW - All that extra paddling 2016 is forcing upon us is turning you into one svelte looking guy!
My wife thinks fishing is merely guys wandering around like idiots swinging sticks in the air. Many of my trips prove how smart she really is.

I was fishing the "Dead Zone" above Warrior Rock and the Lewis River.  Last year, the shallows on the Washington side put out a lot of fish for trollers but for lack of any late morning marks, I moved to the shipping channel.

Thanks Skidplate!
