Time again for our annual sturgeon trip on April 27th at Swan Island Boat Basin ramp. We could use some on the water fishing coaches to keep the participants safe and help find the fish.

Volunteers should arrive at the Swan Island Boat Basin ramp at 7:30am. We'll wrap things up at 3:00pm. Lunch will be tacos!

Thanks from HOW Portland.

This sounds like fun! I just recently got weekends off so i'm thinking about going down that way if it's an open invite. I have never fished for sturgeon but have a lot of ocean fishing experience for lings, hali and salmon. The gear seems pretty basic and from what i understand sturgeon will bite about any chunk of meat lol. I do have a couple questions though. Is retention allowed during this trip and what bait do you recommend?

Best regards,
Jake

We'd love to have you Jake. Bring a VHF if you have one so all the volunteers can stay in contact.

They'll usually hit squid, herring or sand shrimp. Reports from last month said the fish were kind of few and far between. Hopefully with the river near flood stage it pushed them up in the backwaters..

I am totally in! I work at Vigor who owns all the dry docks and piers at the end of Swan Island and if the fish aren’t biting I can explain what all that stuff is to pass the time.

Anything y’all need? I might be able to rally an extra Hobie and some gear that might be a bit on the light side (heavy salmon gear)

Awesome! Yes if you want to bring an extra kayak that would be great. Right now we have 13 signed up for 12 kayaks. If someone no-shows we can lock it up in our chapter trailer while we are out on the water. I think we are good on rods for the participants.

Retention is not allowed and it is frowned upon to pull them out of the water.  If they are over-sized it is illegal to pull them out of the water.  It is a fun event.  I may be able to help.

I may be able to help again too.

Questions though...
How can we help get more veterans involved?
Do veterans need to be members of HOW to participate?
If I have an extra yak and all gear needed and know a veteran that wants to fish, can I just bring him along or is there a process we/he needs to follow?

Thanks.

Bring your friend along with you, we'd love to have you both.

There's no membership, just an invitation list. To receive invites have interested folks send an email to:
Portland Chapter - portland@heroesonthewater.org
or
North Oregon Coast Chapter - northcoastor@heroesonthewater.org

Just confirm your coming when you get your plans together so we can adjust the count for lunch, bait , etc.

How many F'n Craigs do we have around here?  I lived a majority of my life never knowing another of these magnificent creatures (it was lonely) then I get on NWKA and found I can't swing a dead cat without hitting one. ;)
