Picked up a small butt early Wednesday morning and kept it because I was just looking for a quick limit before I had to head back home. Then the big fella decided to take me on a long ride. New personal record 60.12#!! Then got the 21# king not 100yds from shore just as I was reeling in my trolling gear to get ready to land. Figures I'd crack the WG code on what'll unfortunately be my last day down til probably September or later.

Helluva day and provided a few questions and lessons.

1. Gotta start taking the GoPro.

2.  Harpoon spike doesn't disengage from the shaft at least 30% of the time regardless of belly, body, or gill plate shots and full through penetration. Think I need to bevel and flare out the back end of that spike.

3. An A-0 buoy didn't do much to slow this fella down. Went on 4 good +30yd runs (keeping the buoy down nearly the whole time which was pretty cool to watch I'll admit) after the second harpooning in which the spike finally took hold. Dunno if I wanna upgrade to an A1 or 2 or just enjoy the show. Also, 8' of buoy line is too much.

I know there are more, but I gotta get to sleep. Just wanted to throw up a quick post and a few pics.

Sweet!  Now that is a great haul!

You can step up to a A! buoy but I would stay away from the A2 buoy.  Too big and too much flotation.  I've seen big halibut tear the wire through the fish on a A2 buoy.  The A0 buoy i think has something like 13 pounds of lift.  Its eventually going to get the halibut up to the surface.  think about the drag settings on your reel.   13 pounds is quite a bit.  Also 90% of the time, you line will still be attached to the fish along with the buoy.

I lost a 80 pound plus fish on a barbie rod when the harpoon tip didn't come undone from the shaft.  It needs toi be ultra loose and a bevel helps.  Also make sure you hopld the line in such a way that once you hit the fish, the rope is not being held.  I hold it like this to make sure it doesn't rip my hand off when the fish runs.

Right on! I wish you had a GoPro too...that's on my wish list as well. Good to meet you the other day, hope to see you on the water.

I second that but crop it and center him.... also the guys over 6ft tall so that makes the fish even bigger.  :banjo:
