Perhaps that was the airboat version?  I'm sure for a small fee they can flip it over for you  :banjo:

At least their drive unit floats.  You gotta give them props for that (no pun intended).  At $950/ unit if you had 9 other curious friends and disposable income, it would be tempting.  I am really curious about the drive. They say they sell it separately.  The plastic is HDPE which is expensive and far better than a lot of the lower end kayaks you find in some "sporting goods' stores.

Don't get me wrong, I love my Hobies and I absolutely love the Mirage Drive, but they have gone insane price wise the last few years. I paid $1799 6 years ago for my first Outback.  I love the new seat, but the new Outback is way heavier for a slightly more comfortable seat.  When I first looked at buying a mirage drive separately for a wooden kayak I built, if I remember right, I could get one at Next Adventure for $395. Granted that was pre-Paddle Shop and about 9 years ago. But, the parts are mostly injection molded and do not cost that much to produce. It should not yet have doubled in price. Sh#@, the Federal Minimum Wage is just slightly over double of what it was in 1981. Rant ended.

*edit: Rant continues.  If you haven't done so already, take a look at where that Hobie seat is manufactured.  Mine says China.  That may be why the ones for this yak look very similar and why mine (2017) is falling apart. ::)

I'm super tempted by the prospect of adding a instant reverse type drive to my outback. I love the mirage drive motion and the mixture of speed and torque (if you want to call it that) but I definitely think they're overpriced and there's no chance in hell I am paying $800 or whatever the 180 drive costs just to get reverse.

The riot kayaks drive was announced last year and looked interesting and somewhat well made from the video I saw. https://www.rapidmedia.com/adventurekayak/categories/boats/8743-riot-kayaks-pedal-drive

I'd probably purchase one of these off brand chinese PDL drives though if it could be had for cheap. I certainly wouldn't trust it on the ocean or the columbia, but while bass fishing on the lakes or willamette I'd have no problem with it.

The 180 reverse is nice but it's not a must have in my opinion.  I still find myself grabbing my half a paddle to back up.  Some folks pop the drive and flip it in the drive allowing for reverse.
