Great report Clayman!

How much lead were you using? Fishing close to the bottom or were the fish suspended?
Thanks Barb!  I used an 8 ounce cannonball dropper.  Tried to stay as close to the bottom as possible without dragging it.  I was trying my best to avoid the coho.  Most of my coho bites would occur when I was dropping the rig down to the bottom.  I imagine if someone toplined a spinner out there, they'd annihilate the coho.  I fished as shallow as 10 feet and as deep as 30 feet, but all my bites were in 20 feet of water or less.

Another update: I fished yesterday evening for about an hour,  I watched a guy in a little aluminum land a Chinook solo.  That was encouraging.  No bites for me.

I put in a longer effort this morning, fishing to about noon.  That bit of rain convinced the coho to head to the river, because it was a helluva lot quieter today than it was a week ago.  A few coho jumping, but nowhere near the numbers of last week.  Trolled from the Bend to the Oyster House several times.  I went 1 for 2, releasing a thick 10+ pound coho at 10:20.  Probably twenty boats out fishing today, and I never saw a net fly or even a coho hookup.  Chatted with an old-timer walking his dog, and he said this year is the slowest he's ever seen.  I'm sure glad I scored some Chinook in the ocean this summer, because this year's fall run suuuucks.

I guess one way to look at this year's tournament is if you get a Chinook, any Chinook, you'll probably win!

Clayman- you're not giving me much optimism for catching a salmon on the Yaquina!!

Not gonna sugar-coat it Barb: the predictions for a bad year for coastal fall Chinook are turning into reality.  But the Yaquina run is typically a late run, so your odds should improve over the next few weeks.

A free shot at $500 cash and no takers? Didn't any of you listen to Kanye talking to the president in the oval office?

Event Recap/Results:

Saw/heard of a hefty handful of fish caught on the outgoing tide in the early AM. Apparently, none of them registered. I stopped by the weigh in to check out the silent auction items etc. but headed home to let my doggo pee. Neighbor hung around for the weigh in and filled me in.

Same dude took the top prize for big fish and the side pot for smaĺlest legal adult (not a jack) with a 12#er. The ONLY fish weighed. $500 for big fish, $150 for smallest. $650/12 = $54/lb King. U-Da-Man!

One fish?  Jeez...almost makes me feel guilty for even trying to catch one out there this year.
