Hi all,

I am looking to install a downrigger on my native slayer propel.   I have a scotty laketroller, and I have a scotty mounting bracket for it attached to some mightymounts in the rail system, but I find that trying to troll with it in the salt is really challenging, as it only has a 4lb ball and the blowback on it is insane.  I want to upgrade to a depthmaster, or some other similar compact downrigger that will be able to handle a heavier ball, while still being able to mount it to the rail system.  Any thoughts?  I have seen people mount them on hobies numerous ways, but nothing on a slayer.  Mostly, I want to find a way where I could affix a mounting plate in the rail system so that it spreads some of the stress out over the rail, without limiting pedaling ability.

The rail system on my older slayer in my opinion is not strong enough to handle the stress. I’d consider a plate on the inside of the hull to get a firmer grip.

Hey Rustyski, if you do the Farcebook thing there’s a Native owners group where they talk a lot about gear and modding out the boats (https://www.facebook.com/groups/slayerpropel/?ref=share)...

Mine is a 2016, I would also recommend a backing plate under the rails.

I know on mine the rails don't have screws in all of the attachment points stock.  Have you screwed down each attachment point on the rail? It may give it added support.

No, I’m thinking about trying to see if I can get some kind of backer behind it.

I stumbled across this, and it seemed like a really nice solution to the mounting problem.  Not sure it will save me any money but if I can get a cheap lever drag reel, I may be in business.

Another thought I had. Do you think a scotty gimbal mount would work? The Slayer has a 30 degree pole holder just to the right of the seat. My concern would be it being too close to the seat and having issues cranking up the cable, but it could work.

You need to get 3 dimensional to spread the load out.  What holds that handle on the outside?  Maybe you can come up with an L shaped mount that used the rod holder and the screws holes for the handle.  That would be solid as a rock and spread the load well.
