Title: Beautiful Weather in Homer
Post by: katinalaska on January 02, 2017, 09:47:25 AM
The skies were blue and the seas flat calm in Homer yesterday. Looks like more of the same for today. I went out fishing in the kayak yesterday....nothing in front of the condos, but had my herring stolen once and had one hook up that I lost:-( out by the buoy. I'm going to try again this morning before heading back to Soldotna.(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170102/8b2aef8fa066cfa1c2eff4efbe2070e7.jpg)(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170102/b1afc02fda0d0a6bbbc586fb8051d639.jpg)

Today was productive! Caught my limit in 2 hours.  I found the fish out by the buoy at 50' depth on the downrigger. I was using blue-brined herring.

It was cold, but a lot warmer than in Soldotna. It was 29 degrees when I started out on the water at noon.

Way to go, Kat.  I've been watching the webcams but haven't been able to find the motivation to go give them a try.  I've been freezing my butt off chasing rainbows on the Kenai for less than half the gas money.  I might need to go give the salt a shot just to take a break from the cold temps and freezing fresh water.

Way to go Kat. I like your down-rigger set up. Got any photos of the instalation? Is that a Scotty Orca rod holder and how does it work for you? I've been meaning to get one.

I don't have any pictures of my down-rigger installation. It was quite simple and basic, but works great.

I installed a gear track in the recessed part along the side by the back of the seat. Then I used 2 carriage bolts in the track to attach a swivel down-rigger base to the kayak. I positioned the swivel base so that 2 corners were flush against the top edges on either side of the gear track, and the carriage bolts came up through the other 2 holes. In other words, the base is positioned like a diamond and held in place tightly by 2 bolts with the other 2 bolt holes held tightly against the kayak. So far, it has been very sturdy with no wobble using an 6# and an 8# down-rigger ball.

Not sure if you can picture that from my words. I'll take a picture of it when I get home in a couple of weeks.

On the rod holder. It's a Scotty, the kind that opens up when you lift the rod. I like it a lot. At first I thought it was difficult for me to lift the rod hard enough to open it, but have discovered that I don't have any trouble lifting the rod with enough force to open it when I have a fish on my line!
