Went out fishing for Halibut with Ryu on Friday.  It was pretty slow fishing. Both Ripndrag and I had bait come back up mangled, but no real solid hook ups.

Ryu deciding he wanted to catch a monster halibut, was determined to jig up a greenling or two for use as live bait.  Well, he didn't need the live bait....

I need to work on getting the audio better or put a separate mic on Ryu.  Waterproof gopro case on a long boom isn't going to cut it. Video edited on LumaFusion on an iPad mini.  Audio I had to export out and clean up and remove some noise.

Also for those keeping track of the red salmon fishing, we dipnetted 66 on Saturday in 10 hours...argh.   38 on Sunday in about 5 hours.  Slow slow slow...

Did you contact IGFA? I think that's some sort of record, especially given Ryu's age.
Why so many odd typos ? You try typing on 6 mm virtual keys with 26 mm thumbs....

I am pretty sure harpooning a halibut will disqualify it from IGFA.  I think you can only use a net or a gaff a fish which is just ridiculous and dangerous under these circumstances.  but maybe I will look it up and try it again. We have nets that will hold a 50lbs halibut or better.  With IGFA, you have to be a member to even see what the records are.  Not very well listed on the entire internet either so I bet they police it as a source of revenue.  Seems a little bit like an elitist thing to me and therefore not really even a world record... more like the biggest fish in a private club.  Maybe I am wrong about that.  Ok..maybe too grumpy.  lol. I will look into it.  :D

Give your sun a tap on the shoulder and let him know he's the envy of lots of fisherman.  Great job as he chased it to pick up some line.  That type of concentration/calmness will serve him well in a lot of ways off the water as well.  Would have been worried about a big run on that light line when he stuck it, but he set it up well.  With that type of potential for fish, have to wonder if 15 or even 20 braid being a similar diameter would be good, but with no stretch and that gear, just glad he brought it home.

IGFA is a strange thing indeed when it comes to records. I believe the only allowed method of landing a halibut is a flying gaff. I'm not sure how that would even work from a kayak. Also, all the tackle needs to IGFA compliant. Elitist is a pretty good descriptor for IGFA.

That's really impressive.  I don't think I've ever been that calm catching any fish, let alone one that put up a fight like that.
Kayaking without wearing a PFD is like drunk driving.  You can get away with it for a while, but eventually someone dies.
