I heard it was oct 6 & 7.  No confirmation.  Powerboater friends of mine report hit and miss type fishing.  I have heard that few of the hits were off lands end out to the green buoy.  I will be fishing off a powerboat this weekend to evaluate the potential for an entry the following weekend off my kayak.

Today, fish were definitely near the spit. 4 rods, 5 people, 7 decent kings so far.  Had another half dozen shakers and another half dozen missed strikes.  Not fast but steady until about 3pm and it died off.  Most fish 20 to 40 ft down in 30 to 60 ft of water.  All fish on artifical lure.

Day 2 of scouting in Homer off of a powerboat.

Landed 7 more decent kings off of four rods.  Released 3 smaller fish.  Lost a couple more. The interesting thing was we caught 4 of the fish close to the Ferry dock versus on the "normal side".  The usual High tide didn't produce.  We caught our fish on the end of the outgoing tide and as it came up.  Not very fast fishing but super steady until it shut off around 2pm to 3pm on both days.  We had downriggers stacked at 20 and 35 feet for the most part.   All the fish this weekend were caught on artificial lures.  Both days, we never left the end of the spit.  I don't even think we fished as far as the green can.

Sounds like a great weekend and thanks for the report. Still up in the air about driving for the tournament. Ive tired to call the Elks lodge with no return. On the AOD blog they note hot fishing in Homer as well but have people questioning the validity of the tournament as well.

Great report Rudy. That might be enough to get me out of the house Sunday. If the weather looks decent I may just give it try. If it doesn't look like good weather you won't see me there.

Wow fishing was tough.  Though my kid manages a small one at the end of day 1.  Proves to be our only fish.,  We had several good take downs but we couldn't connect.  being out of shape sucks!!!!

But Ryu's 7 lbs fish is enough for $100 dollar first place non-motorized category.  Since there was only two of us kayakers entered, I got last place.  lol.

A few fish were being caught.  But it looked to be tough fishing for everyone.

We were fishing in less than 20ft of water so not too much line out hence the short video.

Yah, getting outfished by Ryu is just becoming a given these days.

I did hear from a very respected guide that they are HAMMERING fish in the "hot tub" hole directly in front of Land's End's hot tub. Ugh I wish I had more time off.

On a side note, I saved the backbones from Ryu's fish.  My fillet job is the "quick" method which means I just put the knife in and slice down the backbone in one cut.  That tends to leave some meat on the bones.  I typically don't care because I scrape the bones and make salmon burgers.  Or freeze it once, thaw it out and mix in green onions to make like a negi-hama or negi-toro but with salmon.

But this time, I used my instapot and cooked the back bones in a soy sauce, sake, miring, sugar, sesame oil mixture for 100 minutes.  This makes he bones soft enough to eat.  Then I wrapped it in kelp and tied it off with dried gourd shavings to make what is known as "Sake Kombu Maki" in Japanese. Translates into "salmon kelp wrap".  I hate to see good bits of salmon go to waste so I thought I would post it.  Turned out awesome.

Even better, the salmon and kelp broth was awesome so I re-used it and cooked Daikon, Lotus Root, and carrots in the broth and that was equally as good!

Looks yummy!  Did you do anything with the kelp fronds before using them as wrappers?
