So last weekend I skipped out on whiskey because of the winds with saltyak. Ended up going to Seward and getting into some sockeye and rockfish. I still have yet to get out for halibut. This was my first time out sense the king derby. Got some much needed fish and limited out pretty quick. Picked up some black bass for lunch too. Snagging reds in a yak was surprisingly fun. That was my first time doing it. I’ll definitely  have to get out there again.

Very cool!  So this is coming from someone who's never fished "real" sockeye: is it purely a snag fishery for them?  Kokanee seem to have no issue with striking lures and bait.  Is the sea-run form not as aggressive as the landlocked form?

Oh dang! I was debating on going down there and ended up not doing it 'cause nobody wanted to tag along. Is this pretty easy to do? I would totally want to make this a yearly thing to get some fish in the freezer early and not battle the July crowds.

It’s not bad at all to do. Just look for them and cast out and snag. Good crowds down there but not as bad as kenai. Limit was raised to 12 I heard

Ugg. I should have done that. I'm sitting here, waiting for the morning to fish halibut at WG, but I just don't have a good feel for it. I wondered if anyone was parking themselves just off shore with a yak to snag. I have a few friends down after sockeye...

Oh well. Gotta get my game face on. Tomorrow will be the day the king of all halibut comes into Whiskey Gulch to meet me...and never go back out to sea. Right?  :-)

Nice!  We’re kayak/camping Caine’s head that weekend.  Had I known about this, I would have kayak over and join you.   It was sunny and nice little breeze...went hiking, eat good food, and most importantly drink lots of IPA. What a beautiful state we live in.

So this weekend we had a small window to dip net at copper river...and between two of us we caught over 20 kings.  Now limit is 25 fish per person and one-King limit but what’s missing is the sockeye.  They are no where to be found. Sure I saw few catching tiny reds, but they looked malnourished and weak. Interesting read about this phenomenon https://www.adn.com/outdoors-adventure/fishing/2018/06/13/dismal-copper-river-salmon-run-prompts-unprecedented-shutdown-of-dipnetting-at-chitina/

EO closing copper dipnet Monday so I may have to start snagging until July...when the real circus begins!
