Title: Video: Run in with boat
Post by: Jammer on April 30, 2012, 07:38:45 PM
What a weekend!  On Friday, a Sea Lion decides to steal my first Springer of the year. Not to be deterred, I decided to return early Sunday morning for what I thought might be a good Springer bite.  I was wrong. After a couple of hours with only one takedown, I decided to catch and release Sturgeon until the bite turned back on. While I was chillin', waiting for a Sturgeon, I was surprised by the sound of a motor that just kept getting louder and louder to my position. When I looked back I was shocked to see a boat barreling down on me, striking the rear of my kayak.  Luckily, everyone was OK.  The boat's driver was very apologetic and said he saw me at the last second and was able to turn away, only striking the rear of my kayak rather than dead on.  As much fun as Sturgeon fising is right now, it may not be the best time of year to be anchored in a kayak on the Willy. Be Safe!

Holy crap Mike! Dude that's scary as hell! They could have hit you dead on and it could have been alot worse. So, no exchange of info or offer to pay for damages?
It looks like they just left!?
Was there any damage to the Outback?

Damnnnnnn! Glad you are OK. And kudos for taking a pic of that jackwagon. How's the boat? Do we need to organize a bucket of G-flex, some beers, and a work party in order to bring the good ship Jammer back to health?

Wow Michael.  Just like with the springer theft, how did you keep from swearing?!  You're a better man than I.

Hey if you look closely at the video, you'll notice you lost your paddle that was strapped to the camera side of your boat.  You might be able to track those guys down from the number off their boat if you got it from your photo.  If they apologized I'm sure they'd pay for the paddle.

Did you get a clear shot of their reg numbers? I'll keep an eye out for them and get it for you if you want them.  I'm not sure if an incident report is warrented unless there is $200+ in damages or an injury.  Might be a good vid to throw up on IFish >:D

It looked like they tore the rudder off your kayak.  What a couple of dumbasses. How do you not see a kayak with a 6' 4" dude sitting on it wearing a yellow shirt, yellow pfd, and a bright orange safety flag. Plus,  you weren't even in the main channel.

Or did they return because you snapped their picture.  I hope the stresses from the crash didn't cause any unseen damage like cracks at stress points.

At first, I was going to recommend the throwing stars available at the Loch Hagg general store.  But then I remembered the time in which I got hit by a minivan whilst riding my bike.  Last summer, in fact.  The guy had an unwilling double shift at work, and his wife left him.  He spaced off and made a right turn without looking.  His insurance was recently cancelled due to insufficient funds.  He cried, we hugged, and I staggered off to embrace my concussion.  He learned a lesson, and I came to appreciate the value of awareness.  But I was OK in the end, and it sounds like Jammer is, too.  It's hard to judge anything from the video, and Jammer makes it sound like he resolved the situation in his own mind.  I guess the take home message is that we should continue the fight to make power boaters aware of the fact that our low profile asses are out there.  And maybe, just maybe, that the Loch Hagg store has tri-stars for $4.99 a piece.

But seriously, if your boat is jacked, let us know; we have G-flex and spare boats.  We'll get you back on the water ASAP.

Should have grabbed your neck and started yelling "Oh Oww Whiplash."

Then clutched your chest and said "Oh this is The Big One, Oh I'm Coming Elizabeth!"

Glad you're ok dude. You're lucky that wasn't a much bigger boat, or a twin hull that would have gone over the top of you. I might have radioed M.C. Sheriff and had them sobriety checked. Then again you might not have passed that test. 😜

Wow, Mike, you were amazingly calm and poised. I was shocked to see how stabile the Outback was during the impact and you remained so well balanced, both physically and emotionally. My hat's off to you for handling this so well and I'm sure glad you weren't hurt.

I've been reading a lot about the racing yacht that was pulverized last week by a mystery freighter off Ensenada, Mexico. This really strikes home. I hate even going out on Lacamas Lake when the wake boarders and PWC crowd are out in force. Too much gasoline, alcohol and testosterone makes for a treacherous environment for kayaks.

Be safe out there, I like the idea of buddies facing in opposite directions to watch out for each others' backs.

Glad you are okay.  You have not mentioned any damage to your kayak.  At first I thought your rudder was torn off, but I think it was the lower on their outboard.

Actually, I am surprised this does not happen more often.  In the past when I bank fished I'd see PBs zooming up and down the river at 30, 40, or more MPH.  Even at the time I thought it reckless and dangerous.  Add a few beers ...   The salt seems safer but it could just be the "big sky effect".  Sometimes as I watch a PB barreling toward me from afar I wonder if there is even someone at the helm.

Again, glad you're okay.  Let's keep our heads on the swivel.

Man, j that's nuts. I'm glad you're ok. Also glad the guy was cool about it. My first inclination was to type "what a douche!" but the fact that he didn't take off and was super apologetic makes this just a crazy "shit happens" situation with no real douchers involved. Perhaps he was planed as pelagic suggested. Who knows. So cool you got it on video. I always say...gotta keep that thing runnin ALL THE TIME when yer on the water cuz you never know what crazy shit's about to happen.

Glad you're ok.  Thanks for showing a vivid reminder not to ever feel fully relaxed while on the water.

I thought the first one of these I'd hear about would be in the toilet bowl at Drano, a choppy ocean or on a white capped Columbia.   Areas where visibility could be impaired or boat density is maximized.

Did they come form the what looks like a boat launch near you?

X2 getting it on video.  Could lead to some good discussions with the PB crowd.

This is one of the reasons I like these GoPro's. You can just turn em on, set the angle and forget about them. I'm soooo happy i ended up Ok after this. I'm sure we can all see that it could have been a lot worse. When the guy brought back my paddle he mentioned that he and his buddy were in fact pretty busy chatting and weren't paying very close attention. Do you think???
As far as damage to my Outback is concerned, NOTHING IS BROKE! :)

DOZENS of us have fished that spot before. Regardless of whether or not he was looking (bad form for an operator anyways), that is a pretty blind corner, especially that close to the east bank. I suppose that is why most stick to the center or western edge of the river in that spot.

Michael, glad you came out of things relatively unscathed. A good friend of mine has a dock right there, I'll have to hook you up some time with which one it is, as she doesn't have a problem with us using it to chill out for awhile...

Post by: sherminator on May 02, 2012, 06:15:17 AM
I've often thought the rear view mirror is a good idea. I bike sometimes, and I definitely use one then, but I've had a few instances where I wished I had it on the kayak. One morning, I was intently working dock pilings for bass. I heard the constant bass of a big motor idling along, when I turned around and there was one of those huge tour sleds not 30 feet behind me, just sitting there. Maybe the captain thought he was giving his group a chance for some fish porn - I don't look at all like Jammer, though - but it startled me that it got that close without me noticing it.

Jammer, glad you are fine, the boat sustained no real damage and the guys that hit you seemed to handle this to your satisfaction.  Thanks for sharing this because as a newbie it really sends a powerful message about some defensive things I had not truly considered yet.  My learning curve has been shortened a little bit because of you sharing your experience.  I have a GoPro, and I'm going to make sure that is is running and that my head is on a swivel to try to keep myself from being the next power boat victim.  As an owner of a power boat, I'm never in a hurry and always looking around.  I don't ever want to be the guy being run over, or running over someone else.  I also admire your calm factor.  We all know someone who would have just gone apeshit ballistic over that situation.

Good for you! Yep, keep your eyes open out there. This time of year I usually switch and mostly focus on Bass along the edges of the Willy and try to avoid anchoring. The boat traffic will only be getting worse now that school's out. What scares me the most this time of year are not the fishing boats, but the kids running full speed on waverunners and the wakeboard boats where the drivers spend more time watching the skier/boarder in the large rearview mirror, then where they're driving the boat. I'm glad we all have a heightened awareness.

Yeah, I had another close call last night while fishing.  I got pretty pissed off by the whole situation and how reckless some of these fair-weather boaters are.  The young kids in wakeboard boats with friends and music cranked, not paying attention in particular.  Anyway, I came home, ranted to my wife about it and emailed my video to a couple news stations.  I was honestly pretty surprised they were even interested.  But I guess with all of this hot weather, they also thought it was an important safety message.  Kind of embarrassing getting attention for getting HIT but if it helps get the message out, and reminds some of these boaters to slow down and pay attention, I guess it's worth it.

Can we finally start treating these Katy Perry bumping, Miller 64 swilling, broship denizens as asstards akin to Japanese whalers and ready the damn prop foulers? I am sure we have members crispy enough (looking at YOU, boxofrain) to form a few chapters of the Willamette Shepards. I have catfish bait fermenting; it would make fine stink bombs.

Post by: Pelagic on August 14, 2012, 08:47:10 PM
Yah gotta admit that area is a choke point in the river and might not be the safest place to anchor.  On the L.O. side you have the rock island that boaters really shy away from and on the other side of the river you have lots of docks that boaters also naturally shy away from.  This pushes most of the traffic on a narrow middle of the river path on what amounts to a fairly blind corner (if you aren't paying full attention while running at high speed).  Might be time to reconsider anchoring in the middle of the river on that corner??

Title: Video: Run in with boat

Yah gotta admit that area is a choke point in the river and might not be the safest place to anchor.  On the L.O. side you have the rock island that boaters really shy away from and on the other side of the river you have lots of docks that boaters also naturally shy away from.  This pushes most of the traffic on a narrow middle of the river path on what amounts to a fairly blind corner (if you aren't paying full attention while running at high speed).  Might be time to reconsider anchoring in the middle of the river on that corner??
Great point PP. It is a sketchy corner near GR without a doubt. The episode I had last night was bass fishing just south of elk rock island near the east bank. Just keep your eye's peeled

Wobbler, Noah, Ryan and I were out there today and it was busy. Noah got a little bass, otherwise skunk city.

I had a blast sailing. The Jet Boats did a  couple of 360's and one stopped and waived as I sailed by. Several wake board boats were really nice but others were oblivious to any risk they present.

Met several nice SUPers and a nice lady in a Revo. Told her about NWKA. Pam, you gonna join us?

I heard there was a fatality on the river today, saw a Fire Dept. boat go by.

It ran again this morning on KPTV.  Very effective with the video and comments, imparting a solid message.

It's great to get the video out there. I love that the first couple of comments posted think it's a fake video. "Kenny the Kayaker", that might have to be your new nickname, Jammer :) People are a-holes....

Heh yea. Whats worse, they come up with a conspiracy theory about "banning powerboats" and this "staged" video is a part of it. Its so ridiculous its amusing!

I recall Halibu77 always clipped a cyclist's rear view mirror on his cap, I'm going to look for one.
