Now that the ice is off Lindbergh Lake, I’ve been catching some lake trout.

We use to fish lake trout at 150-180' in the lakes in Ontario, Canada.  How deep is Lindbergh?

Those are nice fish, and nice work!
I expected the worst, but it was worse than I expected...

Way to go!  Looks like you had the lake all to yourself.

Lindbergh Lake has sections which are 120 feet deep, but I find most of my fish in the 45'-75' range.  On Flathead Lake, which has a quite different fishery, I troll for lake trout down to about 180 feet.

Do you need to use a descender to release a lake trout caught from 180'? I don't know the first thing about fishing for lakers.

You don't need a descender if you are going to take the lake trout home and eat them, which I always do.  They're tasty cooked and tasty smoked.  And because lake trout are regarded as an invasive species which is endangering bull trout and cutthroat trout, the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks and the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes set lavish fishing limits, like 100 per day on Flathead Lake, and sponsor the Mack Days tournament on Flathead Lake.  Check out the statistics at the 2016 Spring Mack Days which is currently in progress - there have been a bunch of fishermen who have repeatedly caught their 100 fish per day limit. See http://www.mackdays.com/Stats2/ .  The guys who are getting the big numbers are catching fish mostly under a foot long by jigging right on the bottom in 250-300 feet of water.  The limit on Lindbergh Lake is 20 per day, which is still a lot of lake trout.

I love your posts Pete!
I have a hard time looking at the fish because of the beauty of the areas you fish.
 simply magnificent on both!

Pete, Nice fish!  Silly question, but what stringer is that?  I need to pack up and come over your way so you can show me the ropes on the Lakers.

That stringer is called a game clip. I got mine from Austin Canoe and Kayak for about $15. Very handy tool.
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent
