Just got back from an amazing trip to hobuck beach. I am not a good video camera guy but i posted a video on youtube in case some of you are wondering what it is like over there or considering a trip. My brother came up from socal and we fished sunday and monday. We kept 30 black rockfish most in the 14-18" range with several over 20. We also kept two 29" ling cod. Amazing fun time and i am pooped but WOW what an awesome time. Here is the link.. sorry for the poor photos and narration.   doug in sequim

thanks coosbay,  one comment on the second day spots. If you leave the resort and head right or SW you will come to another "bay". there is a blue and yellow house on the left with a parking drop box on the side. you pay 5 bucks and you can  drive onto the beach drop off the yaks and then park in pullouts by the road. you would want AWD or 4WD but the sand was hard and no problem.  to save money the rv hookup area was right next to the cabins and they had showers. you  can tent camp there as well. this was a once a year deal with my brother so it was worth popping for the cabins.  doug

Thanks for the great vid and report, Doug. I'd love to go camp and fish there. I used to camp there and surf, but it looks like the Hobuck Beach resort owners have really improved the place. (i remember older cabins).
I never get to fish much in June, being a self-employed lawncare monkey. This entire Spring was hideous out here on the coast, what with all the rain all the time.  July gets a little better for my fishing. I usually have more time in Aug and Sept, but this year I have a bunch of projects lined up. Gonna continue to be tricky. I think I fished twice in June. This has been a bad year for me trying to get out fishing.
I'm heading up to Lake Ozette later this summer for a few days, and might try to get a day in there off Hobuck.

If you're headed out there again, give us a headzup!

I'm hoping to do some paddling and fishing around here in the estuaries and tidal creeks in the next few days.

Have a great 4th, everyone!

Nanook,

How about an advanced kayak fishing trip out here complete with surf zone clinics?  I consider this place one of those must do pilgrimage places that every kayak angler should do (and every surfer and kayaker).  This place just has a very spiritual feel to it, and I'm not at all spiritual.

You mentioned that before. I'm going to work on this and see if I can get something on the books for September.

For some reason my post didn't show up:

I'm headed to Hobuck this weekend 8/13-8/16!
Just got an OK Scupper Pro which I hope to finish rigging up tonight. I havent been kayak fishing on the ocean yet so this will be quite the experience. I was wondering if there is a sheltered place to launch / retrieve at Hobuck, and what thickness wetsuit is necessary. Can I get away with a 3mil since its august?  Also is it all bottom fishing or is there a salmón run as well. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Unless you have an experienced kayak fisherman with you - do yourself a favor and do a few test runs on some flat water first. It'll make your fishing experience at Hobuck that much more fun and a little safer. ;)

hi seatown, feel free to pm me and i will give you my phone #, and i can fill you in on specific details. drool is right. I grew up surfing and feel very knowledgeable about the surf but on a kayak it is a whole new ball game. When we went out we didn't have a problem because you are paddling fast and punching through the surf. coming in both my brother and i dumped it (huli'd). kayaks don't track like a surfboard so the goal is not to catch the waves but be between sets. clothing wise I would plan on getting wet.   It was a great time. Next time i go the one thing i would do different is take the poles out of the holders and tie things down when coming in. it is flat sandy beach. If you stay at the resort or campground it is a ways to the water so you will want wheels or a friend. The fishing/ catching will be the easy part. be cautious. Fog is also heavy right now so be very aware. at the very least have a compass with you. good luck be safe and have fun. doug in sequim

My family and I drove around Hobuck Beach yesterday, August 11.  While the place looks really well-sheltered and the surf launch looks relatively easy, the staff wanted a fee (only $15) to spend the day there.  So we looked things over and determined to come back another day so as to get some bang for the buck.  Anyway, we left and the fog lifted and I went out on Shipwreck Point and caught three bass and a ling.  The ling was only 18 inches so I let him go.  The swell seemed pretty intense and I had a little trouble launching, because of the waves.  I got out around 2:30 PM and came in around 4:20.  I don't know if we're hitting the ocean today, although I'd like to in Area 4 somewhere.
