Ok guys I talked with the port manager and builder today. They are asking for marine board grant money. You know the money that we are now paying for with our increased access fees. The proposed improvements would be a pair of pvc slides  with a different spread for different hull designs. If possible concrete pavers between as our path, they would be in the water, so rig your kayak, slide it down and get in.
So the question is, for your kayak how far apart would be ideal for you to slide straight down into the water?

Please list year make model and best spread fir your hull. No need for long winded discussion or other ideas as we need to put this together by Monday morning.

Fishing wasn’t stellar in the bay today but the wind waves were a blast coming back in breaking over the side of the kayaks, wet ride for sure and a pass for one of the youngins to join our next PC trip.

My 2020 Outback is about 34" at the widest point and 24-26 would be a good spread for me.
The 2018 Ocean Kayak Prowler is about 27" widest point and about 21-24" spread would work for that one

Thanks T well put you at 24 inches for both. If you guys that never plan to fish the bay or live out of state have the couple minutes to and post post up we’re trying to diversify the spread. If your unsure of what we’re talking about it imagine two pvc pipes side by side XX inches apart and you slide your boat nose first or tail first your choice. We definitely need some bigger boat measurements like PA’s I’ll get mine measured and posted in a bit.

2011 Hobie Oasis (33") & 2014 Hobie Revolution (28"). I would like to see 18" to 20" wide tracks for both. I want rails a butt width apart, not at the edges of my yaks.

I'm envisioning a track in Garibaldi starting up by the G. You hop on your yak, slide down the hill into the bay and have enough momentum to cruise over to crab harbor.

Is that what your plans call for?

Thanks sherm, I hear ya my fleet, both natives the big tuna and the cobra fish n dive will slide on 24 inches but at the outside edges on the 3 narrower ones. All but the big tuna will slide just fine on 12 inches. If I can get a couple confirmed pro angler barges. I’m going to call NA and get there opinion as well. I’m thinking 12 inches and 24 inches. Now they will be parallel so a guy could toss across both sets and slide it in sideways.

No Dungy, as fun as that would be I’m sure a lawyer somewhere is smiling ear to ear reading that.

So I’m asking at this point if 1 at 12 inches and 1 at 24 inches will accommodate your boat? They will be about 4 feet apart with a walkway in the middle. This will be from the high tide-ish line at the grass area And will end at about the -1 foot-ish low line. The water end will likely be submerged so your hull won’t get ground up.

2015 Hobie Outback widest point = 33 inches
2020 Hobie Outback widest point = 34 inches

The 24 inch slide should work

A cool and appreciated project.  PVC or UHMW?  I just measured my PA14.  A 12" gap would probably work if it's PVC pipe.  If it will be a flat UHMW slide a 24" gap would be better.

We’re thinking 12 inch for one side and 18-20 fir the other this will be round tube and our own heliumhead is helping out with this as a rough draft 18 inches off the ground so easy to mount but not a back killer bending over. This would be one side and V in the middle to clear transducers.

Long story short the marine board is not willing to help fund low dollar easy build access points, soooo there putting in for permits to drive piles and put up a paddle sports dedicated dock. In my opinion we don’t need an actual dock but what do I know. This will likely be a 2021 starting project and they’re going to try to get fundraising going as the marine board wants to do a dollar matching project I guess. So a ways off but our iron is in the fire.

I think a dock would be nice to have.  Just make sure they know that they are building it for kayaks and it needs to be low in the water so we aren't having to climb down into our boats or worse yet, up out of them.  Hopefully they keep you in the loop and you'll have some say in the design.

if they put in a dock, it will have to be ADA compliant.

Yes it will, and I’m guessing there going to try to get some grant $$ that way as well. Likely why the Board didn’t like our plan, you know, keep it simple!
