Title: Where are the Idaho kayak anglers?
Post by: reelmccoy on July 23, 2016, 09:18:48 PM
I moved to Idaho almost 2 months ago.  Prior to my move there were a number of actively posting kayak anglers in North Idaho, they seem to have disappeared?

I have been fishing regularly with Idahobrit, but have not seen any post from anyone else?

For my part, I fish a couple of days a week.  One of those is always on the Spokane River above the post falls dams ( I live close by).  Fishing the river has been lots of fun, the smallies are abundant.

I'm always interested in meeting and fishing with other kayak anglers.  PM me if you want company or you're always welcome to join me on the river.

Tight lines!
Todd

There are a number of us in the southern region of idaho, we all fish frequently!! Most of us post up on facebook as well, Snake river yak addicts is a group of close to 100 members, we all fish together any chance we get! Hit us up and we can meet up. Kick'n Bass Kayak Fish'n is putting on another event on August 13th at cascade reservoir, tamarack side.

I'm tucked away down in the southeast corner of the state. I haven't fished as much as last year but still try to get out once a week. Plan to see if I can shake up a few walleye and smallmouth this afternoon when the wife and I have our after church kayak date.

I also live near where you normally fish. I just got my kayak a couple weeks ago. It's just a Pelican but I like it and have been enjoying adding fishing accessories. Do you launch at Quemlin Park? Was thinking that is where I would try the maiden voyage as it's close by.

It's good to hear from other Idaho Anglers.  To the ones in the souther and central part of the state, I'll post here if I'm headed your way.

Wormkiller, I do launch at Q'emlin quite often.  There are lots of smallmouth bass in the river.  Next time I'll PM you before I go.  If you plan to head out from there and want company, send me a PM.

I think a lot of us are post shy.  We don't get out as much as we would like and so don't post as much as the other forums.

I am originally from the Sandpoint area and will be (hopefully) moving back up there this summer. I'd be happy to go fishing with you when I get up there.  I'd love to go after some of those Lake Cour d'alene Salmon.  I am currently on a mission to catch a King from the ocean down here. I had pretty good one on last weekend but it wasn't meant to be and I lost it. I'm hoping to finally land one this week. If I do I will post some pics on here even though it is not local to the forum.

its good to hear at least that there are active Kayak Anglers somewhere in Idaho!   There are two of us that meet up regularly up here to fish.  With the weather cooling off and the water temps falling, i expect to fish less, but I still expect to get out.  Particularly want to try for some of the chinook salmon in Lake Coeur D'alene.  Anyone in the panhandle looking for a fishing partner, PM me.

There are a couple of very active facebook groups in southern Idaho.  Most of the "action" is over there for us southern folk.

I went out on Cocolalla today with IdahoBrit and two of my children.  It was a beautiful day!  Cold with glassy water.  Unfortunately the trout were not eating what I offered.  Ended up with one LM Bass and one catfish.

Caught on a square bill crank bait no less and probably 22" long,  he barely fit in my little trout net.

Fished and sailed Cocollala Lake Sunday with Todd McCoy and his children. Started of a flat calm so no sailing. Trolled a gold Mack's Lure® Flash Lite® Troll – 4-Blade in front of a Pro-Troll Trout Killer in flame color on one rod and a Rapala Balsa Xtreme Jointed Shad in Perch pattern on the other. The Catfish liked the Trout Killer and the Trout liked the Rapala BX Jointed Shad. As the wind increased I tried trolling under sail, got a few taps but no takers. The sailing rig worked out with no interference with all the 4 rods, holders and electronics. The only thing that would not work would be to have vertical rods stored in a crate in the tank well as they would interfere with the sail control line. The Hobie built in rod holders are angled nicely so the rods cleared the sail control line.

Nice Large Mouth. What part of the Bay Area have you been living? I moved up here to CdA from Napa 31/2 years ago. I would love to fish with you when you are able.

We have been in Union City for the past 5 years. Lived in Fremont and San Jose before that. We just bought a house near Camp Bay in Sagle and are planning on moving in this summer once school gets out here. I'd love to go out fishing with you when we get up there. My wife and kids also have there own kayaks. We went out around Trestle Creek this last summer and caught some pretty nice small mouth. My 8 year old reeled in a 16 inch one from his little kayak. It was a pretty good fight for him. Even my 5 year old caught a few from his yak. I grew up in Kootenai and was on Lake Pend Oreille or hiking into some mountain lake pretty much every weekend until elk season and then deer season started and then my focus would shift to hunting.

One thing I miss about living in the Bay Area was easily getting to the sea. I love it here and am thoroughly enjoying my retirement.
Let us know when you are up here. Some of the anglers I have been fishing with here are reelmccoy, uplandsandpiper, honu and Mike Ferguson.

I will definitely let you know when we make it up there. Easy ocean access is the one thing I will miss here. Crab opener is November 5th and I can't wait for that. Salmon season is just about over and I was not lucky enough to get one into the net. Right now the ocean is to rough to go out kayaking on. A couple weekends ago the swell report for Half Moon Bay was 24-26 feet. I figured that would be a good day to keep well away from the ocean, haha.

Thats some swell! That would make you think about your mortality right?
Anyway, keep us posted.

Ive see you wearing knitted gloves out on the water. Do you have any recommendations for cold weather hand protection.

The gloves I use are polar fleece with removable mittens over the fingers.  They are warm even when wet, but once wet...they take a long time to dry!

Ive see you wearing knitted gloves out on the water. Do you have any recommendations for cold weather hand protection.

I have two suggestions for cold-weather kayak fishing gloves for use in a pedal kayak.  The knit portions of these gloves must be polypro or some other fiber which doesn't absorb water.  The gloves should not contain any cotton, because cotton can absorb up to 27 times its weight in water, it dries very slowly, and is like wearing little refrigerators on your hands.  Wool will keep your hands pretty warm if it gets wet, but I don't like wool gloves because they stay soggy and wet for a long time.  The heat from your hands will quickly dry out polypro gloves.

1. Hardware store knit polypro gloves.  Home Depot and other hardware stores sell polypro knit gloves which are real inexpensive.  They are typically white, but get darker colors if possible because they don't show dirt and fish slime as badly.  They are great for outdoor use.  They're cheap, so buy a bunch of them.  Throw two or three pairs into your fishing gear when you go kayak fishing, so you can switch to a different pair if one pair gets wet.

2. Hardware store rubber palm knit gloves.  Home Depot and other hardware stores sell knit and pile work gloves with rubber palms.  Most of these are for summer use and are not at all warm, but some are thick and warm.  The advantage of the rubber palms is that you can grab wet things or touch wet surfaces without getting the gloves wet.  Look for gloves which have a lot of insulation between the palm of your hand and the rubber.  Gloves in which the rubber has been absorbed part of the way through the knit fabric aren't as warm.

Knit gloves don't work very well in a paddle kayak, because water dripping down the paddle shaft will quickly get the gloves wet.  But in most conditions you can keep knit gloves pretty dry when fishing from a pedal kayak.

Thanks I'll give them a try. I’ve been trying different options. Still trying. The neoprene ones I’ve been using are hard to get back on once they and my hands are wet. I had a pair of “technical poly pro” gloves designed for runners but once wet my hands get cold. I also use fingerless cycling gloves, same results. I’m just getting soft and feeble. Haha.

I take the gloves off and stick them inside my PFD when doing delicate work or getting my hands in the water, and then dry my hands off with a small towel before I put the gloves back on.

wool liners with nitril gloves over them.   Low volume which helps with the paddle grip, the nitril gloves keep the wool dry.  Works quite well for me.   If you tear the nitril glove, just put on another.  they are inexpensive.

Hey Kalph!  I recommend you wait to get the kayak out on the water until the water warms up significantly.

I don't do Facebook, but Idaho Brit is pretty involved with the NIKA Facebook page and keeps me updated.  When spring come, we'd be happy to have you join us.  I have a PFD you can borrow, if it fits.
