Title: off road crabbing - when hobbies collide
Post by: jp52 on November 13, 2022, 06:30:23 PM
Since my wife and I are empty nesters we decided to buy a jeep a few months ago so we can explore a bit more (hobby 1). Naturally, I thought about how my new off road capabilities could enrich my fishing (hobby 2). I decided to drive out to the prime crabbing grounds right offshore of the Oregon Dunes recreation area in Coos Bay. I really do mean right offshore, I often see boats within a couple hundred feet of the shore setting traps. It's about a 5 mile drive on a sand "road" to my favorite spot where I can drive right onto the beach and unload my kayak just a few feet from the water. So, depending on how you look at it I either used no sand wheels or my sand wheels were 35" BFG KO2s. I went out there this morning and, while there was frost on the dunes when I was started, it was mostly sunny and very pleasant on the water. I caught an easy limit of good sized crabs with one JUMBO in 2 hours with 3 hoop nets and tossed back a bunch more keepers after I limited. Since I was alone I just went home and cooked them, but when I take my wife we cook them out there and have a picnic.

Nice write up.  The jeep sure beats the hell out of using my C-tug cart with sand wheels.

looks like you are just up from the submerged jetty. this is a great time to crab lower CoosBay, with the ocean closed to all crabbing, commercial closed until testing shows full crabs, and no big outflow of fresh water yet. I had planned to hit the jetty Friday but some gusty winds in the forecast had me cancel.

Pretty cool, what's the story on the PVC on the front of the Hobie?

It's a rack to hold traps/hoops. Here's a link to a description on NCKA

Note that I switched to 3/4" PVC because the 1/2" broke after a while.

Nice solution! I dig it. Generally I only bring one pot with me but I can see great value in a solution like that for sure!
