Meet up with other NWKA members in the greater Portland area for a beer, some food, and a bit of kayak fishing talk.
Schedule:
November 12th, 7 pm
Pietro's Pizza
10300 SE Main St
Milwaukie, OR 97222
December TBA
-
Thursdays are my normal days off work, and my sturgeon day. Anyone want to meet up before and do some sturgeon fishing? There's a good launch and a great sturgeon hole less than a mile away.
-
I'm thinking that might be a good idea. I'm still not sure if I'll be able to make it though, I'll post up a little later.
-
Should we maybe call ahead? How many people are planning on making it? I've never been to that place so I'm not sure if we need to.

might be a good idea, guess it depends on how many folks will attend. My guess is less than 15 or so, and they should be able to handle that no problem.
Maybe if we had an informal "Hands up if your attending" we could get a rough number and know wether to give them a heads up or not.
I'm attending, so at least two of us so far ;D
-
i'm in ;)
-
You betcha. Do they have sausage?
-
Count me in...
I look forward in getting to know some of you guys personally and perhaps do some fresh/saltwater fishing together.
Being new to this sport, it would be great to meet someone willing to show me the ropes.
I have a tent trailer and would be willing to share it with someone while campling/fishing together.
SD
-
I'm pretty sure I'm in.
-
I should be able to make it unless an emergency comes up. Looking forward to meeting you guys.
-
I should be able to make it there.
-
I plan on being there.

The Jefferson Ramp is pretty close to the pizza joint.
Map to the Jefferson Ramp in Milwaukie (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=jefferson+launch&sll=45.44553,-122.644329&sspn=0.014241,0.027595&ie=UTF8&radius=0.67&filter=0&rq=1&ev=zi&hq=jefferson+launch&hnear=&ll=45.448089,-122.638621&spn=0.013488,0.027595&t=h&z=15&iwloc=A&cid=2652408728875959602)
The downside is that its only accessible from southbound 99E. I figure I'll be on the water and fishing around 1, maybe 2. Stupid daylight savings says we can only fish till 545pm :( I guess from there its head to the cars and talk kayaks will loading.
Should be easily see me fishing just upriver from the launch.
-
Looks like I have an INSAYN ride so I will hopefully make it there. ;D

Sweet! I'll drive, you buy. ;)

Looks like I'll be able to make it as well. I'll be picking up bait for a Saturday sturgeon hunt on the way.
Jay

Did we want to pre-order some pizza's so we can just get down to business when we get there?
BTW: I'll have my two 11 y/o's with me.

From the agenda I saw, you're supposed to give a presentation on safety, Jay.
Did you not get that memo? ;D
-
There is also the issue of the "PDX crew" annual dues you still owe Jay. Didn't you get the PayPal link?
-
I'll bring the stuff to demo how to tie a double "shrimp fly" rig for rockfish.

Yeah, safety is my middle name! You'll really want to listen to the solo paddler fishing the salt in 8+ foot seas...

Brian, I sent you the $19.99 last week. Didn't you get it? But wait, there's more!

Looking forward to your Demo :o
Dang I forgot the camera :(
Chuck

:disgust:
(jealous)
You guys better have had a good time.
-
I know I did! There was still enough pizza and beer left over for you and maybe even one more!
Talked some good fishing, learned some cool rigging, saw some good toys/books/etc.
-
:disgust:
(jealous)
You guys better have had a good time.
We did.
The venue worked well and along with the requisite fish stories, I think everyone present learned something. Kind of reminded me of show and tell in school. Only difference was, the audience was actually paying attention to everything the show'er was saying.
Nothing brought one of those spring steel jigging rods
INSAYNE brought a couple of takes on OK drift anchor arms
Pelagic tied up shrimp fly droppers and talked ling strategy
Spot brought along a sample Fall Chinook bobber set-up
deepcolor shared a secret sturgeon bait (Don't even ask cause it's not gonna be posted on the internet) :police:
Great event guys!
-Spot-
-
Thanks to everyone that came and hung out! Had a great time!
-
It was great to meet and see you all last night. Usually when I want to talk fishing, everyone in the room clears out. Took me a minute to get used to a fishing conversation that lasted more than 2 minutes. Now on to important things, like building that live bait well in my back yard.
-

Be sure to let us know when you have it finished!
;D >:D
-
Had a great time good to see faces as apposed to just threads!
Learn allot, Laughed allot, ate allot oh did I say learned allot.
Thanks Guys Looking forward to fishing with all of you!!
SD
-
Good to see ya'll again (even you Jay! ;),) and meet some new faces.
Good stuff, great turn out.
And actually the pizza was damn good, too. DTS and I pretty much polished off an entire large between the two of us.
-
Where are the pics?
-Allen
-
Where are the pics?

They are all mental pictures. Ya gotta show up if ya wanna see what goes on. ;D
-
It was fun, and I learned a few things. I'll be cuttin, drillin, and trying a few new things soon.
-
Now on to important things, like building that live bait well in my back yard.
Does this mean you will be selling it as well. :)
I had a great time as well and learned a lot. Thanks
-Craig
-
insayn.... another words no one brought a camera....
-
no, there were cameras, but we were busy talking fishing

I had one, Yakintup had one, I'm sure The Nothing's iPhone was on tap. We had so much chatter going on, everyone wanted a piece of every conversation that it was musical chairs for 2.5 hours. I didn't even think to pull my camera out of my pocket.
-
Dang missed the camera thing... :'( Oh well guess will need to give it another try soon! ;D
Had a great time. Nice to meet you all!!!
-
It's early December. Do we want to meet up again in the next week or two before everyone get's carried away by the chaos that is the holiday season?
How about...
Time: Thursday December 10th at 7 pm.
Location: (any suggestions)
Potential topics:
-Portland area sturgeon fishing
-Steelhead fishing (from kayaks and the bank)
Andy1976 sent me a bunch of swimbaits a couple weeks ago and I'll pass some out.
If you're interested in attending let me know. As long I can get a few more members to join me, I'm in.
Brian
-
Hey Brian,
Although we went to Pietro's last time, I was wondering if their big screen TV has a DVD player attached?? Maybe we could screen Game On! at the same time?
Jay
-
Works great for me! I'll be there!
-
Sounds great to me. infact, my calender already had it listed :)
-
I'm there!
-
I'd like to attend but it'll depend on what day of the week and whether there's something for my boys to do while I'm talking fishing with y'all.
-Mark-
-
Sounds good.
Jay, I have a small portable DVD player that I think I connect to any TV (I'll check on that). If you want to call ahead and see if they will let us take over a TV for an hour while be buy hordes of pizza and beer that would be great.
Otherwise, I'm also up for an alternative location to try out if anyone has an idea.
Brian
-
Any chance of getting y'all to scoot it back a week so? (like the 18th?) :love4:
-
I'd like to attend but it'll depend on what day of the week and whether there's something for my boys to do while I'm talking fishing with y'all.

Do I need to bring my daughter to babysit your boys? ;D

Whoops! I missed the date in bsteves post. I can make it on that day. Maybe on the 18th.
Craig, you don't want to leave my boys unattended with your daughter.... ;)
-
Craig, you don't want to leave my boys unattended with your daughter.... ;)
She's a black belt you know! I think she'd be just fine! ;D
I can't think of a better qualification for a babysitter! A certified A$$ kicker! :D

INSAYN's daughter with her blackbelt vs Spot's twins and their blackbelts. This should be good. :happy1:
Next Thrusday isn't set in stone for me, it was just a proposal. Any objections to switching it to the 18th to accommodate FFTW and NANOOK? Poor Wali spent 5 years kayak fishing in Portland by himself, a meet up like this would probably bring him to tears.

Riiiiiiight.... ::) Gotcha

If I'm in town, I'm down for the 18th
-
I wish I could be in town for the 18th, but I'll be down in San Diego for the holidays. ;D
-
Alrighty then...I've booked Pietro's Pizza for next Thursday, 12/10 from 7-9pm. We have the back TV area tables with the big screen TV. I'll get there a few minutes early to get the DVD player unlocked and the video cued. I told them 10-20 people so let's get 40 to show up.
Who's in?
-
Sorry Wali, looks like we have a room booked.
Maybe some of us will take pitty on you and meet up somewhere on the 18th as well.
Brian
-
I'll be there..
-
I'm in!
-
How do we want to handle food this time? Last time everyone was super generous ordering their own pizza and beer to share with everyone and I felt like a lot of it was wasted in the end.
Do you think it might make more sense to collect some money and do a group order?
-
Your d00ds wasted beer? And Spot was there?
-
Your d00ds wasted beer? And Spot was there?
Lol! You're going to find this as unbelievable as I found the fact that you're not a pot-head but...... I almost never drink and when I do, it's rarely beer.
I'm up for a group order if there are enough takers.
-

Not really on the pizza, I grabbed a box full of the leftovers and had that for breakfast and lunch the next day! ;D
There wasn't much pizza left actually, just beer.
-
I drank what I safely could :police:
We can do a collection there, or we could use my Paypal CC if people wanted to PP funds for the GTG instead...
-
I'll be there on 12/10.
As for grub and liquids.. what are we thinking here? $10 towards the food fund and BYOB (buy your own beverage)? I'm not much a beer drinker either. :-\
Spot, so you don't need a sitter then? ;D
-
I think the way we did it last time worked fine. I took my leftovers home and had a good old fashion college breakfast the next day, mmm cold pizza!. The only thing that really got over ordered was the beer, perhaps some coordination once we are there in that department is all that's needed
-

I hope to make it. Still iffy but I'll do my best. Retention days....slipping away....must...get...out...
-
You guys can count me in as well!
I'll bring the DVD that Brain loaned me, thanks Brian I really enjoyed watching it!!
See you guys 12.10 at 700pm
Chuck

Dang >:(
Not able to make the meeting tonight!!
Brian how can I get the DVD back to you I know there are others that want to view it as well??
SD
-
SD,
Don't worry about the video. If you want just hold on to it until our next meeting. Or if it really bothers you to have it that long, PM me and we'll arrange something (drop off, mail, etc.)
Brian

Was this the "Game On" DVD we were planning on viewing tonight at Pietro's?
-
I think Jay was going to bring his copy. Jay?
-
Jay has a copy and is in charge of the showing.
-
See you there...
-
I'm at the Alder Creek party right now and then making the run down to Pietros. Should be close to on time...
-
I'm leaving in 10 minutes. Been pouring lead all day. Bringing a few new pyramid anchors to show and sell if anyone is interested. Have three 10lb'rs and one 8lb'r. I put a spin on the design, thinking they will have a better bite on the river bottom than the traditional pyramid anchor.
-
INSAYN,
Those pyramid anchors are pretty sweet. I think you're right about them probably having better bite. However, I don't think they were 10 lb and 8lbs respectively.
Brian

Man you have sensitive set of scales in those arms of yours. All I have to use for a scale is my wife's digital bathroom scale, which doesn't seem to want to detect anything under 20lbs. Last night before the meetup, I weighed them once each with myself in the garage, and the cold 22ºF may have skewed data. Just a few minutes ago in the warm house, I weighed myself (3 times) and then again with each anchor with myself (3 times each). Turns out the little one is dead on 8lbs, and the larger of the two came out 11.6 lbs.
Thanks for the vote of confidence and appropriate need to recheck my data, that just bumped the price up to $23.20 ($2/lb). ;D

So how'd it go? :angry3:
Pure P'Town Love Fest. Free gear. Lots of info. Shared Pizza and Beer. Watched some insane kayak fishing. Doesn't get any better.
Something tells me you didn't really want to know..... >:D
-
So how'd it go? :angry3:
Let's see if remember correctly. :icon_scratch:
DTS and I drove to the pizza joint arriving just after 7pm, noting that a few guys were already there. Chatted about some kayak stuff for a few minutes, and then went and ordered a large pizza with damn near everything on it. ;D
Sat down to continue chatting with the guys while waiting for said pizza to arrive. Steelheadr popped in the "Game On" DVD for all to watch on the big screen TV. Pizza arrive and DTS and I scarfed down most of it pretty quick, as we was hungry. Brian pulled out a batch of colorful rubbers...........er.........I mean swimbaits and passed them around. Very cool colors!
The Nothing had a curious infatuation with the amount of "wiggle" they had in them. :-\
After the movie was over, there was a bit more kayak chit chat, and some folks bailed out. The remainder of us sat there BS'n for bit longer until Yakintup's better half called him home for desert. At that point we all decided to head home, as it was going on 930PM.
Yup that's about it. 8)
-
Sorry I missed you guys... I ended up helping a buddy move some livestock that were having issues with the cold weather. By the time I got home a hot shower was the only thing I was up for.
-
Fun for sure! Great seeing everyone again!
Yes, the swimbaits that were handed out....
I'd just like to say thank you Brian! And thank YOU Andy!
;D
-
Is it me or does that fish look really cold? ;D
-
Is it me or does that fish look really cold? ;D
A total upside to fishing when it's colder than the fridge, is you really don't need a cooler, burlap, or ice to keep the fish cold.
They'll probably be some of the best tasting fish yet.

The fish I caught ice growing up where always much better then the fish I caught in the summer. For example, pike caught in the summer tasted like mushy swamp, but those caught ice fishing were firm and tasty.

< ala Tommy Chong> ..."wow, man, instant deep freeze..."

It's funny you mention that. That fish and some others that day did start turning white after I brought them up! :D

Oh no. Don't tell me - my fish are gonna need drysuits too!

Wish I could have made it down last week. I really wanted to get some advice on my first SOT. Anyways, I'm gonna try for January if there's a meet-up planned. Sounds like a lot of people bring stuff to share or for show and tell. I don't have a lot since I'm so new to this, but I just realized that us fishermen use a lot of nitrile/latex gloves. I can get a pretty good deal on boxes, about $8. So if anyone wants to do a pre-order before the next meeting, I'd be happy to oblige. Just let me know your size and if there's a certain kind you want, and I'll see what I can do. Anything from www.fishersci.com (http://www.fishersci.com) I'll be in La Paz all next week, so will reply when I return.
I usually get these:(https://fscimage.fishersci.com/images/F53601~wn.jpg)
-
The pseudo-official date for our meetings is the second Thursday of each month. So in January we're looking at 14th. As for the location, we'll have to figure that out.
-
I hope to be able to attend my first meeting.

If any of you PDX fishers need some closed cell foam for transducer installations or the like, let me know before the next meeting. I have sheet of 2.5" or 3" thick closed cell foam I'd be happy to share. Just let me know how much you'll need and I'll plan on bringing it to the next meeting.
-Mark-
-
just fyi. we have 3" & 4" closed cell foam at the shop for 3 cents a cubic inch....4ft x 8ft pieces if you need more.
-
Have we decided on a location for this month's meeting? Let's here some ideas.
-
I'll donate a $50 gift card I have for Kells Irish Pub if people don't mind coming downtown. That should cover us for 10 minutes or so.
-
I'm a fan of Pietro's. It seems to have worked out great so far. Plenty of seating, decent food & brew. I'm not too familiar with the Portland area so I don't really know of other options but I'm ok with that place again.
-
Only other place I know of for groups, with decent parking, is Lucky Lab... Either on SE Hawthorne or NE. The SW location has crap for parking
-
I'm new to the group and would like to meet some fellow fish yakarz. I will keep checkin back for a location. Tight lines!
-

Lucky Lab is good for me as well. But then again, so is Kell's or Pietro's. Lucky Lab does have plentiful parking, though.

Dang, no takers on Kells? Don't worry DC, I'll help you burn thru that gift card. :)
-
Only problem I have with Kells is wondering if someone's gonna end up shooting a hole into my yak.
-
Kell's could be tough for parking and space. But beer tastes good. Bacon tastes good. Nobody will shoot the yak, they'll just sit on it while they sell crack, camp under it, pee on it and then go get their free sandwich.
I'm easy so wherever you choose, I should make it.
-
I vote for the Grand Lodge in Forest Grove. We can get beer, good burgers, good fries, and parking isn't an issue. Actually, we could save the Grand Lodge for summer when they have the court yard open and have live bands playing outside. Maybe do a Hagg Lake mini derby earlier in the day? :banjo:

I'll bring my dirt bag! Havn't kicked it around in a while... sounds like a good time! ;D

I think the Cornelius Pass Roadhouse would be a better venue for the outside, summer event on the West Side, in that it's right next to Hwy 26.
-
hard to beat a jumbo burger at the Helvatia Tavern off 26. It also would make a great summer venue.

So I don’t know if you like country music but I was thinking one of these days we could we could drive out to a field, crank up some tunes, smoke a few Macanudos, maybe even toss a disc around…at-whay o-day ou-yay ink-thay m-pay?"
??? ??? ??? ??? ???

UNNYFAY ;D
-
Don't sweat it guys, it's just another feeble attempt by those jealous Washington guys to make fun of our serious PDX "bro-downs".
-
Settle down.. Yeah actually cool how you guys are doing the meet ups. If I was closer I'd stop by for sure.
Z
-
No reason you can't do a Seattle meetup. All it takes is critical mass and I think our PDX area roll call helped a bit with that. I think the South Sound folk are going to try to put something together.
-
I think the Cornelius Pass Roadhouse would be a better venue for the outside, summer event on the West Side, in that it's right next to Hwy 26.
I dunno, man? I think the Grand Lodge has more to offer by location than RH1 does.
Where we gunna be able to do a mini derby anywhere out near the Cornelius Pass Roadhouse,.... the Fred Meyer seafood department? ;D
-

Behany pond is less than a mile away......... 8) So are the Dawson Creek ponds if you're feeling like doing some stealth fishing. And, heck, if we're gonna do a Hagg Lake mini derby, why leave the lake to eat and drink?

Because we can! ;D ;D ;D ;D
Are there any fish even in the Dawson Creek Ponds?
-
Are there any fish even in the Dawson Creek Ponds?
I refuse to even acknowlege that question. ;)
-
Where and when is the next meeting?
Chuck
-
That, is a far out question...
We did get a little side-tracked, didn't we?
My vote is for either Pietro's again, ot that Black Lab place that Isaac was talking about.
-
I vote Pietro's as well. Easy to get to, mucho parking.
I am not a Downtown fan, and avoid it as much as I can.
Thus why I live in Grovetuckey. ;D
-
Lets keep with Pietros this month. No need to change on short notice
-
Pietro's works for me!
Chuck
-
Sounds like Pietro's is the call.
Anybody else going to make it beyond those who've voted already?
Anybody bringing toys for a show and tell?
-Mark-
-
I should be there as well.

I'll be there... Any interest in some Winter Steelhead gear construction show and tell? yarn ball/ez egg side drifting rigs, bobber and jig, pink worm, kitchen sink etc etc.
-
Steelhead gear would be timely!
-
Pietro's, McMinaminamins, Roadhouse..... The real question is where are we going to meet in April?
(between the 3rd and 7th)

I'm marking my calender! ;D
If anyone wants to bring some springer setups, that'd be nice. Just want to know what I should start buying! :)
-
what day?
-
Pietros, Tomorrow, Thursday, January 14th (second thursday of the month seems to be the day)
-
If/when Wali (FFTW) is in town we my deviate from the 2nd Thursday bit some months (i.e. April?)

I'll bring my fiberglass rod pod lid, maybe we can get Isaac to do the same to give some T-10/T-13/T-15 owners ideas on how to remedy the flimsy factory lid. 8)
-
i can do that :)
suppose i should run it through the dishwasher first. its kinda dirty
-

Simple Green soak down, wait 20 mins and rinse. ;D

Dishwasher is faster, just don't tell the wife i know how to use it (and how i did...)

Unless your dishwasher is a maid or named Pedro, I highly doubt you'll get that lid through a cycle in 20 minutes, and be very effective. :-\
Again, Simple Green (100% concentration), soak 20 mins, rinse. ;D
Fish slime gives it character. ;)
-
Can someone confirm the time? I have an idea but want to make sure. Thx.
-
7 @ Pietro's Pizza
-
Am I the only one that noticed that this Thursday (Feb 11th) is the second Thursday of the month?
Are we getting together? Same place? New place?
I'm in if we are.
Brian
-
I've thought about that a few times in the last week. I just kinda planned on being at Pietros at 7 like usual.
-
Dang, that did creep up! I'll be there. I guess it'd be easy to have it at the same place since it's such short notice! ::) :D
-
We have three confirmed...it's official.
Thursday Feb 11th
7pm Peitro's Pizza in Milwaukie
Anyone have ideas for show and tell?
-
I thought maybe some springer techniques would be in order. I know that idea was tossed around last time but I don't recall it being done. I'll bring a couple of rigged examples...
-
Man, just missing these left and right.
I'm already booked for that time (starting Crossfit and that is one of my initial training days). I really want to come and see everyone, but I getting in shape to be able to peddle/paddle (and run the Portland Marathon this year) is priority right now.
-
I would personally like to see some setups for trout fishing if anyone has anything special they'd like to share. I would also like to see some springer setups.
-
I'm out this month..... Too many things going on.
For my portion of the show and tell, y'all can just check out the Kayak Springer Fishing for Dummies "How-To" at the bottom of the front page. 8)
-
I am out this month too. Headed to the coast on Thursday morning for a week of chasing steelhead 8)
-

Sounds like a plan! i've got a few options in the dept.
-
Yes, I would like to spend some time talking about that because I recently found out that I need help in that department! ::)
-
I'll bring some misc. gear for the salt.
-
I might be able to show up, not to sure yet. I will be coming back from a 2 day fishing trip out of Coos Bay. Hopefully I will be back in time. I would be great to meet some of you!
-
I'll just have to be there in spirit this month!
75 degree water is kinda nice.

:angry7:
Ok, that's just not right! Keep that to yourself! ;)
-
I should be able to make it as well.
-
I'll be in Georgia next week, so I won't be at the meet.
but, if you're guys looking for something to do, I have a copy of Kayak Kevin's dvd "Kayak Fishing the Chesapeake Bay" if you wan't to watch some right coast fishing action. Got it in the mail on Friday and just now watching it for the first time...
-
Sorry for being such a nerd... is the meeting this coming Thursday 3.4.10 :-\
SD
-
It should be next week on 3/11 if we're going to go by the previous trend. I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it at this point. Any input for location? I'd like to try out the place that Isaac was talking about. Lucky Lab... something?
-
I vote Lucky Lab this month.

-
I vote Lucky Lab this month.
What is the address?
SD
-
They have three locations from which to choose.
SE, SW, or NW?
-
I think someone mentioned that one of them has a better parking situation than the others. I guess if I read back in the thread I could figure this out, but I think it was one of the southern ones.
-
I'm out this month. Kid's basketball game.....
-
I'm out. I have to go to San Diego. I love the Lucky Lab, too. :'(
-
The Lucky Lab in SE. The address is something like SE 9th and SE Hawthorne

Keep going straight and you'll be on Belmont St., coming off of the bridge.
Turn right from Belmont onto 7th Avenue.
At the second traffic light (Hawthorne Blvd.), turn left. The pub is 2 1/2 blocks up Hawthorne on the left side of the street. The parking lot is behind the building on the corner of 9th & Madison.

Lucky Lab's menu is as limited as Pietros, but instead of pizza, the Lab does sammiches.
Parking isn't great, but this location is as good as it gets for the Lab. Lot should be do-able, and there is a ton of free on-street parking in the immediate vicinity.
The Lucky Lab is a family and pooch friendly place
-
I'll be there.

So tomorrow, or next week?

I was hoping to make it this month to meet up with you guys, but just landed in Phoenix for a work thing. This place reminds me of how glad i am that I live in the NW. The only water I could see from the air is golf course ponds, swimming pools and man made canals. Can't wait to get back. See you guys next time. Enjoy the tasty beer and delicous bites.
-
just got my permission slip signed and stamped
-
Looks like I'll have to bail on this one. Too many exams breathing down my neck. :homework:
-
Good thing I checked...I was ready to drive to Pietro's tonight.
See you there.
Jay
-
I think I know what bsteves and the nothing look like. Otherwise, I am at the lucky lab and do not recognize anyone yet. I'm wearing a black jacket and siting by the piano if anyone is here and reading this.
-
Not going to make it tonight :( long, cold windy day on the river left me with little gas in the tank short of hitting the couch with a warm blanket ;D
-
Small group tonight. Looks like it was game night at Lucky Lab, the place was pretty packed.
-
I had same problem txpaddler had. I went in the lab, and the place was packed with chubby nerds playing magic the gathering.
-
Someting tells that Brian kows his way around the 20-sided dice. Ya'all shoulda brought out the elf-based alter egos and pwn3d the noobs. I just like the image of a bunch of fisherman talking lures at the Dungeon and Dragon convention. It would make for a sweet 50s gangland musical.
-

Hey, just because I have these hanging off my rear view mirror doesn't make me a nerd! Seriously though, I haven't played D&D since middle school.
-

Sorry we missed you Ling Banger. Normally a bunch of kayak fishing nerds is easy to spot at a pub. However, with game night we got lost in the mix.

I didn't want to offend any closet gamers reading this forum, but....that was kind of spooky last night. Were they actually communicating with each other via laptops, from across the same table?
???
-
Wait...don't WE spend the day yapping to each other via laptops? I'm surprised yall didn't roll en masse with your fly new shirts!
-
Nobody was representin' w/ the new NWKA T? The meetups might need a designated NWKA T wearer.

Mine was in the wash, otherwise I would have.

Not while sitting across a table from each other... ;D
-
There was one table w/some normal looking people. The high ratio of dudes w/goatees made me suspect some of them were fishermen. I had ridden my bike there and was fairly soggy. If I had to squeeze in anywhere I was going to soak folks. Next time.
-
Maybe next time I'll wear my dry suit :tongue3:
-
Not the NEW dry suit? Actually both you and stealheadr can wear your NEW wetsuits.
-
Sorry I said wetsuits at the end meant drysuits.
-
what's the plan?
-
I should be able to make it this time. I would like to try the Lucky Lab place, we might want to come up with a plan though just incase we're overpowered by some other group! :D If not, I'd also be ok with Pietros.
-
I guess it depends on the group size...
Large group (>8) = Pietro's or Lucky lab on a non-game night.
Small group = any decent brewpub in Portland would work.
I found this regarding a "meetup" for board game playing in Portland.
http://www.meetup.com/pdxgames/calendar/past_list/
Looks like board game night is every Thursday night at Lucky Lab.
We should consider another venue for Thursday nights, or maybe a new night for Lucky Lab.
Brian

Brian, You can count me in this time around. Should we just try pietro's again? Pietro's is big enough for pretty much anysize group. Fish on!
-
Pietro's is a fine location with plenty of room for us. The beer however is a bit sub-par for Portland and there are so many other options. I think I may be becoming a beer snob.
Anyway, Pietro's it is, unless someone can come up with a better venue. If we have another small group like last month, any brew pub would work just fine.
Brian

I agree with you on the beer, they sure could use help from the community. ::)
-
The Lab in Multnomah Village has a real nice room, too bad they want a hundred bucks, however it's upstairs/private and you get your own server. Maybe when the group gets bigger. In the same hood, The Cider Mill has a lot of room in the back when there's no live music, plus wicked fried chicken/spuds and a full bar. Went to skool and used to be roomies w/Toby the owner. He's a nice kid, I try and throw him a bone on the rare occasion I leave my domicile for libations.
-
The Lucky Lab on Hawthorne also has a private room for about $100.
I haven't heard of the Cider Mill, but it sounds like an option.
Here's another option.. Laughing Planet (several locations). I'm fond of the one near me in Woodstock primarily because they are kid friendly. If figure if they can handle kids well they can handle a bunch of kayak anglers.
I don't know how busy they are on Thursday evenings, but they have a great beer selection on tap (Ninkasi and Terminal Gravity to name a few) and decent burritos (wraps actually as they aren't typically Mexican), bowls and salads.
They have a few large tables and you help yourself to setting.
Brian

That sounds pretty cool.
I'd be willing to go with that.
-
fyi I think I read that wrong on the lab, I think the barmaid is an additional $50. Not that I can't get off my ass and get my own suds anyway
-
speaking of woodstock, Mickey Finn's is another good one, kid friendly also
-
Yeah, I'll leave the decision to the people that are actually familiar with the area. So whatever everyone comes up with, I'm cool with it.
-
I was just slinging ideas/adresses. I'm cool w/anywhere as well...as long as it's not another dungeons and dragons chapter meeting. Charisma minus 2

we've been in the same place at the same time at some point.
As much as I love my GLH from Cider Mill, I dunno that it'd be an appropriate venue. Grub is good, beer is average, parking blows, and they can get pretty crowded at the drop of a hat. Actually, last time I had my kayak at Cider Mill, someone managed to hit my car, and drove off. Fortunately no yak damage, but, c'mon, how hard is it to not notice the 16' long orange hunk of plastic infront of your face?
-
I should be able to make it and any of the places mentioned sound good to me. I have never been to Laughing Planet or Mickey Finn's, but I'm always ready for something new.
-
If ya wanted to hustle out my way, there is the McMenamin's Grand Lodge out in Forest Grove that has good food, good beer, and reasonable parking. There is also Hagg Lake just 10 mins away for some fishing earlier in the day. In the warmer summer days they usually have music playing out in the yard, and you can sit and eat, drink and just enjoy the evening air all while the kiddo's play in the grass.

And, again, the Cornelius Pass Roadhouse is just 2 blocks off Hwy 26. This location would make the slog a little more palatable to our East side contingent.
As far as Hagg goes, we should make one of our summer PDX meet-ups a pot-luck BBQ at Hagg. This would allow us to eat, drink, fish and brag till the sun goes down.

I live out here in BFE FG and made it several times to the Milwaukie Pietros, it's time folks come out to BFE FG. :laughing7:
Cornelius Pass Roadhouse (aka RH1) is for engineers, yuppies and such (and you know it). We don't wanna drag this crew into that kind of crowd. ;D

Oh, come on now...despite external appearances they're both still McMenamins.
I'm Spot on this one, we should do something in your neck of the woods this summer at Hagg.

perhaps tying my visipole to one of the chairs?

I'll bring some flares. ;D

is it this thursday the 8th or next week?

Keeping with the pattern it would be this Thursday.

Enjoy the meeting tonight. I got flexed out today so I won't be up in Portland.
Just in case you forget, fishin' hats are chick magnets. ;D

What's the call for tonight's location?
-
Without a consensus on a new venue, I guess it's Pietro's Pizza in Milwaukie.
Maybe our first agenda point tonight should be to pick a new venue for May.
-
What time should we meet at pietro's?
-
usual time: 7pm
though i'll likely be late
-
7 pm Thursday May 13th?
-
yeah, was just thinking about that myself
I have Kayak Kevin's DVD if we wanna watch another film...
-
:-[Im in for Thursday. Same place or something new?
-
I'm out this month. I have a planned Skype meeting with my wife from Nepal. I don't think I'll survive being at a meeting and missing this call...
Jay
-
I'm out, family coming to town.
-
I think the snow in Cheyenne is going to rule me out too. :-[
Maybe I will just spend some quality time at the National Rollerskating Museum here in Lincoln, Nebraska. ::)
-
I'm out too. Bummer. Next time hopefully.

If it's going to be a real small group this month, I suggest we don't limit ourselves to places with really big tables and mediocre beer.
Here are a couple suggestions...
Hopworks (SE Powell) http://www.hopworksbeer.com/
Luarelwood (NE Sandy) http://www.laurelwoodbrewpub.com/
but I'm open to others (as long as the beer is good).

Hop works is a great choice! How many are coming tonight? I do plan on joining tonight, however is anyone not coming because the are fishing instead? I kinda want to do both. Eitherway, should we plan on 7pm @ Hop works?

I have to admit, the call of the Springer will be keeping me away from the get together tonight. Gotta keep at em while the the getting is good ;D

Seems to me you guys should be moving your meetup to the Cedar Oak ramp this month. I have little league committments or I'd be chasing Pelagic's sled around OC tonight. :)

Paddlers right. I will meet up with you guys after an evening springer session. I will still try and make it, but most likely late. Anyone want to meet up this afternoon on the willamette? Tight lines!
-
Jammer, I'd love to join you but I have to take my son to swimming lessons right about when I should be getting home from work.
Anyone up for some Willamette fishing on Friday?
Sounds like tonight's meeting is going to be me at Hopworks at 7pm with Jammer and The Nothing possibly showing up late. Should we postpone to another time?

It's the second week of the month again. Anyone up for a few beers and chat about kayak fishing this Thursday evening?
If so, where?

If it's a kid friendly environment, I can make it.
-
Well, I'd suggest APEX, which is the new beer garden across the street from my office, but definitely not kid friendly.

If it's a kid friendly environment, I can make it.
Grand Lodge in Forest Grove is kid friendly. I'm not leaving town this week, as I only have Wed, Thurs and Friday to get my kayak trailer road worthy. I'm almost there! 8)
-
Well, I'd suggest APEX, which is the new beer garden across the street from my office, but definitely not kid friendly.
I've thought about having it at APEX, but yeah, definitely not kid, dog, car, or credit card friendly. But if you're a beer-geek fixed-gear bike riding hipster with a wad of cash... I hear it's pretty awesome.

Pinball. Don't forget the pinball. They have an ATM, and they knock $2 off of the next beer you buy if you use the ATM ($3 charge). And Los Gordito's is next door, which means cheap, tasty tacos to go with your expensive Belgian beer.

July 8th is the next meetup...
the promotion I got back in March has made my attendance difficult, but I figured that, with my wife out of town, I should be able to more easily make it to this next meeting.
Where to this time?
-
The days are long. Maybe we should meet out on the river after work for some smallmouth fishing. Alternatively, it is summer now so we ought to think about doing a weekend meetup somewhere like Hagg Lake.
Brian
-
I like the Hagg lake idea! 8)
-
I game for either Hagg or Smallmouths on the Willamette.
On another note Wally had posted something last year about getting a little flotilla together for the 4th on the Willamette Not sure if that happened but any interest this year? Someone had also talked about putting lights inside the boats to light them up curious to see what that might look like with a half dozen or so boats. I'm thinking this is more of a family activity too.
-
Will we have a gathering, aggregation, conglomeration, coterie, gang, pack, caucus, forum, panel, rally, symposium, synod, crowd, flock, horde, legion, multitude, swarm, throng, crush, mob, or rabble?
Furthermore, do we have a location, locale, locality, locus, point, position, site, spot, establishment, joint, parlor, groggery, grogshop, pub, public house, saloon, tavern, dive, joint, nightclub, roadhouse, barroom, speakeasy, or salon for this Thursday?
I love the thesaurus at m-w.com (http://m-w.com). Ling Banger is a word nerd and I am available for the meet up, but I know it's a crazy time o'year especially for those w/parental duties. Won't break my heart if ya'll are otherwise preoccupied.
-
I'll not make it... again... annual Anderson Island trip.
-
After a strong Winter/Spring these events seem to have disappeared for the summer (we seem to have skipped both June and July so far).
I'm not around this Thursday so I won't be attending, but feel free to put something together without me. If not, we should try harder for September.
-
I should be able to make it this Thursday. What would be the location. I need a beer after this weekend.
-
that makes two, what's a quorum 4 or 5?
-
Oh, we've had "meetings" as small as 2 or 3. It really doesn't matter.
-
Now that i am done with all my wedding stuff I will be there. All I need is a time and a place.
-

Now that I'm neck-deep in wedding stuff, I can't make it. :D
-
Hello all.....new member here. I won't be able to make it this month but, hopefully, I will be in the area for the next monthly get together.
-
Spot and I where thinking of possibly an "On The Water" meeting at Sportcraft boat launch (in OC) targeting bass and other species. Could even get creative with some food/beverages. Nice beach (West linn side for food/chatting/etc) and lots of opportunities for Bass and other species between the 205 bridge and the old OC bridge. Any interest in something like this? For next Thursday the 19th
-
Can't make it tonight but I'm up for a
scotch and, I mean on-the-water meeting next Thursday the 19th.
-

As I recall, you still owe me a scotch from last December! ;D
BTW: I might have a couple of frozen crappie for you if it's a pedigree'd single malt.

I do indeed. No single malt in the pantry at this moment, but as usual, there is a big a** bottle of Black Label. From which I will bring you some next Thursday. And hold onto those magic frozen baits. I just can't find the space in my freezer with all those frozen crappie in there.

Hmmmm,
this sounds interesting. I haven't fished since Depoe Bay...
-
I'll be there, I just need to know what time.
Spot and others I will need some pointers to help me rig up for the salmon tournament.

How about sometime between 5pm andl dark??? I'll be loading in around 5pm.
The fishing improves once the sun is off the water and the water skiers go home.
Basic smallmouth gear (jigs, plugs, etc) will get the job done
-
Thanks for the info, see you there.
-
I'm game. I'll shoot for 5pm too.
-
In a couple weeks there will be salmon in the Willamette... I would be fun to try and nail some out of the yak
-
Crap! I'm out...
Gotta work till 5 tonight and run out to Fisherman's for a new salmon reel.....
You guys have fun and catch LOTS!

Don't forget, Fishermen's in Oc is across the street from the Sport Craft launch
-
I am free all day tomorrow, just let me know when and where.
-
I would love to, but since the weather is supposed to be decent tomorrow, I'll probably be on the water. ;D I'm thinking that it's getting to be about that time of year again though. Lets get something going for the first Thursday of next month.
-
somebody's got pedal fever
-
Yessir! I've got recon to do! ;)
-
that's two, (bump) anybody else up for a beer?
why not! I'm free after 2. I'd like the idea of fishing, but that requires putting the racks back on the car and then taking them back off next week... (don't ask...)
-
I may be up for drinking some tasty suds. When and where?
-
So how 'bout it? Next Thursday evening? Location ideas?
-
Game 7 is scheduled for next Thurs. if the Rangers can battle back, so pick a place w/a few flat screens, just in case.
update:
Renteria's 3 rbi's tonight and the rest of the slaughter make a sweep more likely than a game 7.
Jammer told me he already bought his ticket so he can party naked down on Castro Street!
-
I'm up for it. Next Thursday is also the first day you can retain dino's on the Willy. I was toying with the idea of taking the day off and fishing my favorite holes near George Rogers. Now I'll do it for sure so I have something to talk about later that night. Anyone like to join me on the willy for dino before the pow wow?
DC
-
I may be able to get Thursday off. Also, I'm still a sturgeon virgin so I really would love to get out there and catch one.
-Craig
-
Hmmm.... after checking with the Mrs. it seems I have other plans scheduled for Thursday. :-\ Bummer.
Anyone up for another meeting on the second Thursday? ;D
-
I am down for a meet up this Thursday. I can't make it out for Sturgeon, but I should have some good sturgeon news to share with you guys.
-
I'm in as well. I know of a couple peeps that have already committed, but any chance that Spot, Bsteves, Pelagic Paddler and The Nothing will be in attendance? If you're living near the Portland area, please join us. Sturgeon season is here, so if anyone else is interested in meeting up, come join in. Also.....Ndogg, Yaknitup, myself and NA are planning some big stuff for early December, so your input would be greatly appreciated. I'll let Ndogg explain more soon.... As far as next Thursday's location is concerned, how do you guys feel about Hopworks on SE Powell at say 6 or 7pm??? Just a suggestion. Cheers!
-
If you guys would like to have a place to to have demos or seminars I have a location that you guys can use for free. it has a 24' X 40' carpeted area at my tackle shop in Hillsboro.
-
7 at Hopworks sounds good to me. Hopefully most of you guys can make it.
-
Thursday should be do-able for me. Hopefully I'll be over this damn cold by then. Otherwise I'll just feed it more beer...
-
Try a Hefeweizen with a lemon wedge. The vitamin C may help.
-
hot rum "toddy" might help...or Thera Flu....
-

you guys saw this, right? man is gracious in offering........

Believe me, I noticed!

Anyone up for this Thursday? I'm probably going to need a break from studying around that time. :confused2:
-
Sure! If I arrive with a cast on my hand, you wanna sign it?

Sure do!! I'll bring the sharpie! ;D I'm going to start practicing my emoticons!
e.g.

I'm planning on making Thursday. Should we try a new venue in SE pdx The beer was great last time at hopworks, but I thought the food was so so. Isaac, if she breaks your arm were gonna need to switch you over to hobie for the winter, so you can still fish. Just make sure she breaks the rudder arm so you can still play sturgeon and steelhead. Rippin lips!
-
I can do this Thursday.
-
Things might change within the next 24hrs, but i shouldn't have a cast, just a lame splint
but i'll still be there!
-
Looks like we might have a smaller turnout again so HUB might be a good place then? Other location suggestions?
-
somebody better come up with a good old fashioned dive bar, or you're going to be competing for service and seats with the office party crowds
:icon_santa: :icon_rendeer: = :boxing:

Do you know for a fact that there's a holiday party going on there tomorrow or do you say that since it's early December?
I will agree that given the time frame of the specific month we're in, there's a good chance of company parties in many of the popular spots around town. But if we can't find another good option, we may just have to hope for the best and deal with it if it happens. I'm still new to the scene here so I don't have a lot of suggestions. Anyone think Blitz Ladd might work? :dontknow:
Edit: never mind on Blitz Ladd, looks like Thursdays are poker nights
-
I just found out I will not have my car tonight, so I won't be able to make it.
-
No I don't have any facts, but I know companies prefer to do them earlier nowadays, the first two Thurs.-Sat. of Dec. are the dates that get booked first. If they want people to show up they have to do them early, if they do them later in the month then kiddies have holiday programs, and most people would rather attend private parties than their office party.
That's weird I thought about Blitz also, I've always looked for an excuse to go in there, damn bar poker.
The HUB was pretty packed when we were there a few weeks back, it felt like we were lucky to get the table we had.
Somebody , Anybody, Anywhere else??

You guys want to try Migration Brewing on 2828 NE Glisan? I could meet you guys around 7:30 or so...
Here's the link

Cheers!

Jimmy's Sports Bar - 3017 SW Multnomah Blvd - right off I5 in Multnomah Village (i've been going there for, um, 5 or 6 years). Menu of burgers and sandwiches, 18ish taps. Kinda hit and miss because sometimes its crazy busy, other times its completely dead. There's usually room upstairs
The Ship - 7827 SW35th Ave - also in MV, cash only. street parking only, but uber-dive bar
The Slammer - 500 SE 8th Ave east side near Next Adventure. don't hit your head using the urinal. can have a hipster crowd
East Bank Saloon - 727 SE Grand - might be a popular office hit. haven't been there in ages
Bunk Bar - 1028 SE Water Ave - newer place, lots a beer, good food. Hosted after-party for willamette cleanup in october.
Reel M Inn - 2430 SE Division St - never been there, always liked the name
Migration might be a good hit. Jammer reminded me that my change in work schedule also says I'll be there (where ever "there" is) at 730...

good call
-
Bunk bar it is! First person there grabs the couches!
-
Everyone is welcome! Hope to see some new faces! See ya'll in a couple hours.
-
Thanks rawkfish, TN, and Jammer! I had a great time tonight.
B.B. was a cool venue with tasty suds.
:crybaby2: no new faces ventured out to say  . Lots of good tribal knowledge got passed.
Note to the :lurk: - these Winter meet ups is how you get to rub elbows and ask the :dontknow: with the people that still have full freezers.
Shout out to bsteves, craig, and Ndogg we missed your ;D faces.
thanks for the NWKA :love4:

-
Man, that beer was good! Thanks guys, that was fun!
-
Ah man, I didn't realize it was first Thursday already yesterday. I guess I was too
blitzed from focused on going to the Holiday Ale Fest in Pioneer Square yesterday afternoon. I still have my mug and a couple tokens to use up if any one wants to check it out with me this afternoon (I prefer to go early afternoon to avoid the crowds after work).
Brian
-
It's about that time again! Anyone have any ideas on where we can get a big table, tasty food & brews, decent parking, etc...? I'm a fan of the Bunk Bar now so that's probably my vote but I'm open to suggestions.
Remember, new faces are always welcome!
-
I like Bunk, suggested it... but big tables and parking are not its strong suits... we got pretty lucky with the chairs and coffee table...
were we gonna try out Migration Brewing?
-
Thursday is my son's 5th birthday so I'm out.
-
Migration sounds good to me.
-
So have you guys decided where the PSX monthly meet up is going to be?
SG
-
It usually depends on size. Some places are better for large groups.
Depending on how late this goes I might be able to make it after the kids go to bed.
Brian
-
I think I can make it.
-
Migration sounds good to me. I have still never been there so I'd like to check it out. I'd also like to throw Produce Row Cafe in for consideration for future dates. The wife and I went there a few nights ago with a groupon and loved it. Great selection of local brews, amazing food, and they have this sweet lounge area filled with old school couches and coffee tables. This lounge area would be plenty big enough for a meet-up if we had the area to ourselves. Their happy hour also lasts until 7pm.
-
Migration is good. We could also try Bidgeport Alehouse on 3632 SE Hawthorne blvd or Green Dragon Bistro & Brewpub at 328 SE 9th Ave.
-
How is the Green Dragon for parking options?
-
Green Dragon and Migration have the better street parking. Lets just stick with Migration this month and Green Dragon next. Cool? Should we plan to meet at 7pm? Migration Brewing is at 2828 NE Glisan.
-
I and WR will see you all at Migrations......
-
I and WR will see you all at Migrations......
Awesome.... Glad you guys are coming. It looks like we should have a nice size group this month. For anyone else that might be interested, these meet ups are a great time to get to know our locals from the NWKA. I sure know a lot more people to fish with since i started attending. Besides, these are the comrades that may end up throwing me a line one day. See ya tomorrow!
-
Gentleman and lady, that was a hoot and I'm glad I finally made it out . It looks like I'm once again leaving the great Pacific Northwest in good hands (pogies?)
It was a pleasure meeting all of yall and hopefully I'll get out this way in a month or three to be humiliated by the Springers.
Again, if your in my neck of the swamp, holler at me and I've got a boat and a pole with your name on it
-
nice to have met everyone last night. looked like the sampler tray was a good way break the ice, and not break the bank in the process. just watch that cherry stuff, it;s gotta be a sneaker!
sorry we couldnt have stayed longer but we really did have to leave. got back here at midnight and woke up by the alarm at 435 AM for work. :P
oh, hey, btw, what was the name of that dry suit maker that builds sailing suits?
-
It was a pleasure meeting all of yall and hopefully I'll get out this way in a month or three to be humiliated by the Springers.
Hey Wali, sorry I couldn't make it last night. I had a puking kid to deal with.... :-X
Set aside a Sunday for me when you're back in the spring. I'd love to hook up and put the hurt on some chrome!
-Mark-
-
Wali... It was great to finally meet you.... and swap some stories..
The rest it was nice to see again.. ... Like WR said it was to bad we couldnt of stayed longer.. It was great...
SG
-
Wali, I had to show some of your gallery photos to my wife. She recognized them. Although she said the one from 2000 was the most "recognizable." Small world I guess.
-Craig
-
Holy jumping jellybeans! I saw the South Sound Meet-ups thread and realized it's about that time again for a PDX crew meet-up if we were going to do the 1st Thursday of the month again! Anyone want to get together this week? Postpone until next week? Any thoughts?
-
I can do this week.
-
I can do this week as well.
-
I liked Migration, but the parking sucked. I've been wanting to try out Green Dragon. Anyone else have any thoughts? I'm actually not even sure if I can make it at this point.
-
i'm good.
Green Dragon is street parking only...
-
Dunno if you guys are interested, but there's a pdx area kayakers meetup tomorrow at the Luck Lab (se) that we could crash...
-
hmmm.....
That sounds like it might be a good idea.
-
Do they have a room, or do we have to slum it with the dungeons and dragons set? That wasn't much fun.
-
Oh snap, that's a good point you bring up LB. Do the PDX Kayakers know about that?
-
Maybe they're big into Magic the Gathering or boggle I don't know, I've never been to one of their pow-wows. :-\
-
Just break out your 20 sided dice and join the fun.
-
Touche... forgot all about that deal... dunno, but I know they've got about a dozen RSVPs...
-
Do you guys want to crash the gig at lucky lab or should we meet at green dragon? Does lucky lab have good seating? Would Isaac like to pick this week?
-
One of these nights we should do the Cascade Barrel House. Gansberg is a good dude, and he makes some damn tasty suds!
I agree w/Jammer, The Nothing, or Rawkfish make the call for tonight.
-
Looks like I have a bit too much work to do today. Sorry guys, have to bail on this one.
-
Any decision on the location yet?
-
Well as no one stepped up, how about we meet at the Green Dragon? I'll be there, hopefully at least someone shows up so I am not drinking alone.
-
Perfect.. They have a large selection of Micro's and tasty wings. Ill be there at 7:30ish
-
I am on my way right now. Thanks for making the executive decision. I admire your leadership skillz.
-
wish i could have met up...
have worked 20hrs in the last two days AND had a job interview this evening...
-
Good meeting everyone. Jammer and ndogg I'll probably see you'll at the sportsman show next week.
-
Hello everyone, I'm new here... first post actually. My friend and I are both eager to get in the water. We have been fishing for years, but recently got into the kayak fishing idea. We'd love to meet you all. We are planning on being at the Green Dragon (just happens to be one of our favorite beer spots) tonight. See you all then.
--Bernal and Fred!!
-
Welcome CaYuco! Great to see more new yak-fishers from Portland!
We aren't planning on having a meet-up tonight - that was last week. We usually only have them the first Thursday of the month, but have fun anyway!
-
Oh! I'm not sure how I got it in my head it was this week. Well, I'll be checking for march. I was really looking forward to meeting some of you guys.
At any rate, i'm going to be fishing the Siletz this weekend... likely other coastal rivers. I'll come back and check in three weeks!
Thanks!
-
Thoughts for this week?
-
I am going on vacation this week, so I won't be able to make it.
-
Dayng, it's snuck up on me again! I should be in this week. I can't think of a location off the top of my head though.
-
I am going on vacation this week, so I won't be able to make it.
Guy gets a new Hobie, catches a couple nice sturgeon and now he needs a vacation. ;D
I am in for Thursday. Unfortunately, I have no ideas for a good meet-up spot. I liked the last few we have been to. The Green Dragon had good brew, and easy parking around the neighborhood. I am always willing to try a new place, though.
-
I know, is a tough life.
-
I had to work late and forgot about this. Did it ever happen?
-Craig
-
Yeah, I forgot about it too.
-
Space Cadet Ling Banger reporting for duty. Totally skipped my mind as well. Maybe next Thursday or first Thurs. of next Month?
-
Are folks meeting up his month?
-
I am down April 7th. This time lets get a place figured out early as I know there are a few newbies who want to join us. I vote for somewhere in NE or SE as I won't have a car. What do you guys think about either the Cascade Barrel House or the Bunk Bar?
-
I vote for a place with room for everyone to set together and have a noise level that allows folks to chat without having to turn our hearing aids up ;D Gawd I sound old. A somewhat "hipper" version of Pietro's pizza with better beer would be perfect. Idea's?
-
The place we went to when Wali was here was pretty nice. Quiet place that we could cause a ruckus in. Parking was the only downside IMO. Bunk Bar was tough because it's a popular place, probably moreso since its a 1st thursday.
Laurelwood Pizza is now, um Cascade Brewing I think (41st and NE Sandy)... They could probably suit us pretty well, or even the main restaurant on 50th and Sandy if we can get their upstairs area...
-
It might be worth considering a diifferent date, maybe earlier in the week when crowds are smaller. Lucky Lab could be good but the game geeks already have 1st Thursday.
-
I am down for anywhere... how many people are we generally talking about?
-

I agree. How 'bout Wednesdays? Not too early in the week, not too late in the week... Thoughts?
-
I like Wednesday, and the lucky lab is a good place too.
-
ditto on Wednesday. I like it
-
I'd love to make this work permitting. Wednesdays should be good for me.
-
I like it. Lucky lab is good with me. You guys wanna say next wednesday 7PM at Lucky Lab???
How about SE Hawthorne location?
915 Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard, Portland, OR 97214
-
Sounds good to me.
-
I checked the Portland Meetup calendar and next Wednesday looks free. Free at least of folk who use meetup (we don't). Next Thrusday however both the SE PDX Board Gamers and the Paddle NW Kayakers are meeting at the SE Lucky Lab.
I'm hoping to make it.
-
Next Wed. works for me, but I have this trivia thing at 8:30.
what time do you generally meet up?
-
We've met in the past from ~7:00 - ~9:00 pm
-
We've met in the past from ~7:00 - ~9:00 pm
til Jammer talks you into bar hopping...
-

Only sometimes! it's not hard to do when Ndogg, the nothing and lingbanger are there.. There's too many good brew pubs and dive bars in the neighborhood to resist. Besides, thats when our fishing "stories" become the most interesting.
Haha
-
So tomorrow night, 7pm, Lucky Lab on SE Hawthorne sounds good to everyone then?
-
Sure does, I'll be there.
-
Should be able to make it. Might even bring the brown dog with me..
-
I like it, dress for outdoor beverages and rally the hounds?
-
Count me and the other brown dog in.
-
I will be there for my first meeting and hopefully develop some new friends and fishing buddies. See you there! Is there a secret handshake or something? -FNG
-
Is there a secret handshake or something?
The secret handshake is buying a round of drinks. ;D (http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwevb/images/smilies/gtnsmilies/cheers.gif)
Just messin'!

:D
-
I'm out this month. One last training run tomorrow evening before the marathon on Sunday...
:icon_pale:
-
Run to the Lucky Lab!
-
I'll see you guys around 7. I'm looking forward to seeing some new faces and catching up with some old ones. It looks like we may end up with a good sized group this month. Springer fever!?
-
Sounds Good
I'll be there around 800 coming from work :)
Chuck
-
see, i'm still stuck on Thursdays.
-
Anyone want to do this Wednesday or Thursday?
-
Anyone want to do this Wednesday or Thursday?
I'm up for either! :D
-
Second FFTW, depending upon the place I will be there. If it is the LL at the exit of SEIA from the 84 ramp, first round is on me.
-
Wednesday would be the only day I could make it. Lucky Lab is a great place for the meet-ups IMO.
-

we're talking tomorrow right?
-
I have to see if I can get off early... but tomorrow is going to be a really nice day for a paddle as well.
-
Yup. There's a chance I may not be able to make the meet-up in the evening, but I'll at least be at the meet-up on the Willy! 8)
-
I like the on the water idea. How about meetup from 5 until dark on the Willy?
-
I like the on the water idea. How about meetup from 5 until dark on the Willy?
I could get down with that...
-
I can only head out in the morning, stupid physics lab. :angry3:
-
Left my kayak at the coast ready for another shot at halibut, you'll have to count me out for an on the water affair. If you go for suds post paddle let me know where you're headed.
-
I was thinking about hitting the water from about 3 or 4 until 8ish. I am not sure where I am going, either OMSI or George Rodgers, I guess it depends on the crowd. I am getting dropped off so once I commit I am in it for the long haul.
-
I'll prob be off work at 3, but the yak will be loaded up and gear ready to go.
I was planning on fishing solo (as to not embarrass myself too badly)
But I would be down to meet up if others are willing to have a newbie in your midst
I only have brined herring and some kwikfish, would it be worth it to grab some spinners?
I make my own casting spinners (weighted French blade) for steelhead and salmon in small streams, but I know very little about trolling/prawn spinners.
Do you guys run Colorado blades, size 6/8?
-
It's alright, I am still learning myself, and always like heading out to new places. I have been running #4 colorado blades. This last fish came on a hammered gold blade. Where do you want meet tomorrow?
-
I made some different types of prawn spinners last night and am anxious to see what one of the three works the best. Name a place and I will meet you "Wise ones" there. I fished under the Sellwood yesterday. I looked at Clackamette Park and decided the crowd and the current to much to do alone.
-
I am down to meet pretty much anywhere north of Lake Oswego
I work on Swan Island and can get down river pretty quickly
-
I wish I could join in the fun today, but I'll be watching my boys until 7. Let me know if you guys decide to go out for a quick beer after.. I might squeeze out later. Cheers
-
I don't think there are going to be any wise ones there, but I will do my best to impart what little knowledge I have learned. So lets do the Alder Creek launch around 3 or 3:30. I have only fished this area for bass but the salmon need to pass through it to get to the rest of the river.
Here is link to with directions to Alder Creek which is right near the launch.

Sounds good...
I will be there at or pretty close to 3pm.
Boat house ramp under the Hawthorne bridge right?
-
I am pretty sure it is the one just upstream from the Hawthorn Bridge. Here is the address
49 SE Clay St. Portland, OR 97214
-
Warning. that boat ramp is cursed. or is it just cursed for us washingtonians.. LOL. those who were out sunday will know what i am talking about... LOL
-
I wish I could join you guys, but I am stuck in Atlanta til Friday. Good luck to you all and enjoy the beer if you hit the pubs afterwards.
-
Sooo.... We doing Lucky Lab then? I'm going, hope to see people there. 7pm?
-
Sorry boyz, I was trapped in Pink HELL today and it took waaaaaay more time than anticipated. R and R insulation in the crawl space is not fun and killed my fishing at both ends of the day.
Hope you guys nailed them.
-
Koboabe, Stevehawk and I met up at the dock around 3 and started trolling. After a quick lesson on rigging we kept on trolling. We headed up past the Marquam bridge and I hooked up in front of the Sub. It was wild so I let her go. We then trolled towards the Ross Island Bridge and I got a second hit. This fish was coming home. We trolled around a bit more but we got no more fish love. I was hoping Koboabe and Stevehawk would hook up but it wasn't to be.
It was great meeting you guys and I hope you had fun out there.
Also, if anyone wants to hit up a bar tomorrow night I am down.
-
Ndogg did indeed show us how to fish. Hooking up two of them while we watched. What does one say but "Well done". Sure was sweet to get on the water today.
-
It's official, there's a new Springer Master in the house.
Long live the new king!
So, what was the winning recipe?
-Spot-
-
Seemed to be #4 Colorado blades at 13 pulls or so. oddly most of the hits were in the middle of the channel.
Nodgg showed us that not only are there fish in the Willamette, but they can be caught... now I just need to find time to get back out there.
was a great day on the water, sadly I forgot my camera, but looks like we got a few good pics.
even got a chance to meet gon-fishin as I was pulling my yak out of the water (thanks again for your help with my boat... that was embarrassing)
on a side note, hauling a yak in a small ford ranger truck is horrible.
I cant wait until i have my car with racks back from the shop.
-
You're killing me Nate.
-
I'd like to make the trip up and elbow in on you guys on Sunday Morning. I'm dropping the Mrs off for a Mothers Day treat at the dayspa while I go fishin'!
Erik
-
I will have to pass on Sunday. Will be chasing turkeys around in Eastern Oregon. I will be going on Monday or Tuesday of next week. I will be trying out ndogg's set up. Might be able to catch one this time.
-
Is there still a PDX crew Monthly Meet ups? Very eager to learn!
-
We tend to take the summer off from the monthly meetings (too much fishing to be done.) I'm sure we'll start again soon as we head into shorter, wetter days.
You might also be interested in the kayak fishing 101 seminars at Next Adventure. I'm not sure when the next one will be held, but they seem to come along every couple months or so.

Been to the 101 lecture, will attend the next one to get some idea of how, what fish finder to get. I'm interested in going out and seeing how others are fishing from a Kayak. Thanks for responding, if anyone is going out next weekend, preferably the 15th or 16th, I would love to tag along and learn. I have my own Kayak and will have my gears by then. I'm into bass fishing, for now.

Post an open invite for the date/area you wanna fish. you can usually find someone to fish with and you'll learn a lot more of what you need to know when you have a rod in your hand.

Does everybody have PTA meetings or are we looking to have a meet-up Thursday?
If there is enough interest, I'd kind of like to check out Blitz on 99w, but anywhere is cool by me.
-
Thursday works for me. I will show you all photos of the keeper sturgeon I plan on catching Thursday morning. >:D I need to make up for my extreme lack of fishing skillz I showed yesterday.
-
Can't do this Thursday, but now that the weather is getting a bit colder and wetter we should start these up again.
Craig, it was not lack of skills you showed yesterday but a willingness to use over sized hooks in order to target monster fish while forgoing all the smaller fish.
-
I can make it if it's around 6:00pm. Would be great to meet people. I'm anxious to get out into the water, especially the coast for rock fishing.
-
This week does not work for me but I would be interested in going to some meet ups in the future.
-
I might be down for a meet up this week...
where are people thinking?

Seeing as Blitz is within stumbling distance of my home, it would be awful unsocial of me to pass up that opportunity. I'm interested.

I'm flying back to PDX tomorrow from a very successful trip to Vermont. Wednesday I'll post some shots of the 10 fish I caught today (not from a kayak but a pram).
I'd like to join the meetup on Thursday night, where is "The Blitz"?
H
-
Blitz 99w is in Tigard

What's the typical format of a meetup? I'm a newby...

#4 ... 4/0, who knew there was a difference? ;D OK...I'm not that dumb. I just figured like anything salty, it would have a larger, more ravenous mouth and #2s would be small enough. At least, for the bigger ones I was targeting ;). I should have done a little more research.

After the hazing of the new guys, its pretty laid back. Meet new people, have a couple beers, and talk about fishing.
Just kidding about the hazing part.

Flying back from Vermont tomorrow so I'll be hazy already! ::)

I sure hope you'll have pics of the beautiful Fall foliage and some covered bridges to share whilst we sip chardonnay.
Nice report!

I should be there if it is still on. here is a map for anyone that needs it.

I might be able to swing a visit.
What time are ya'll looking to get there?
-
I'm not going to make it until after 7:00. I have to help a neighbor move a bar out of his basement. Move a bar, go to the bar, bar bar bar. See ya there.
-
Mind if another newbie shows up?
Steve

Is the Blitz still open?

With the Ducks playing tonight the place is probably going to be packed!

I hope so, I'm driving from Camas. Are we eating there?

I guess we could go to Busters BBQ right up the street if Blitz is full.
-
I think if a couple people show up a little before six and grab a table there shouldn't be any problem. Happy hour is from 3-6... hmmm....
-
I'm usually driving past there about 6:00, so I'll go in then. Since none of you know me, I'll be one the bald, white bearded guys sporting a beer gut. (That should narrow it down to about 2 dozen possible choices.)

Ummmm....Busters BBQ, it's right there too.
They have a back room that we could probably snag to isolate our group from the rest.

I'm heading out to Blitz. I have some reading to do and it's happy hour. If it's too crowded we can swing over to Busters.
-
I'm in too.. See ya soon

Sorry I couldn't make it. My day trip with my father to the Wilson river took longer than I anticipated. Would have loved to have a nice cold beer and meet some new folks.

There's a new Famous Dave's at Cascade Station by PDX. How about a November 3rd 6:00 pm meetup? I'd like to hear what everyone's planning for late fall and winter fishing.
There are several new members in the area and it would be great to put a face with the posts and maybe we can plan a local trip or two.
-
I'm in. Their address is 9911 NE Cascades Parkway Portland, OR 97220.
-
Thanks for getting the ball rolling iHop, but mods, can we merge this with the already existing sticky thread for the PDX crew monthly meet ups please?
-
That's what I was trying to do, just hoping to try a new venue. Please move this post to wherever it should be.

I've really got to start paying attention to detail again. I saw the Ihop reference and got all excited. (having delusions of eggs, hash browns, sausage and pancakes) Wasn't paying attention to who had started the thread ;D
If this is an informal RSVP....count me in.

I have asked permission and I am pretty hopeful :) I will likely end up getting there a bit late since getting over there by 6PM would be a challenge. It will be fun to put some faces and voices to posts I have been reading.

I am in and glad you guys picked a day that I am not working. I am looking for information on everyones favorite sturgeon reel, I am in the market for one as I just bought a new Okuma rod.

Just wanted to move this topic to the top and remind everyone that we're planning to meet at Famous Dave's near PDX Thursday nite 11/3 around 6. Give me a headcount so I can get a big enough table. Hope to see lots of folks there.
iHop
-
I will be there but probably not until 7 or so. I am looking forward to meeting everyone. Thanks for driving this IslandHopper!
-
You'd probably be good with grabbing a table for 8.
-
Just joined NWKA this weekend and would enjoy coming to meet everyone. I started kayak fishing last year fishing lakes for trout and kokanee. I want to learn how to salmon and sturgeon fish and get into something bigger than 14"koks. I am pretty well set up with my Hobie, but need to know how to rig an anchor system and anything regarding Sturgeon fishing.
-
Count me in, I'll be there.

Welcome to the forum kevbro (I say that like its mine, maybe 1/1000th...lol) I'm in Vancouver, okay Hazel Dell and just got into all of this a few months ago. I had the same question as far as anchor trolley/anchor set up goes, but thanks to all the folks that contributed, got it nailed. There's a decent set up on the home page and much discussion within the forum. Sorry, not a Sturgeoneer (yet), but up for some of those trout and kokes you found (hint, hint). Were any from Yale or Merwyn? Probably see you Thursday at Famous Dave's if you make it out....that's a hint to you iHop. I'll be there and thanks for pulling it together.
-
I just found out I don't have a car until 8:30 on Thursday, so if anyone wants to pick me up on their way to Famous Dave's I would happily buy you a beer or 2.
-
Are you coming from work Nate?
-
I have company so I can't make this one.
-
CastIronTrout,
Yes, I fish Lake Yale and sometimes Merwin for Koks. I caught about 60 this year mostly in Yale. They are a little smaller, but the limit is 16 where it is only 5 in Merwin. I was doing pretty well down to around 40 feet then by mid Sept I would only get one or two a trip. I have a down rigger on my yak and tried all depths, different wedding ring colors, and ford fenders but it dried up quick. last two times out all I could catch were squaw fish.
I would be more than happy to go with you this spring when they start biting again
For trout I fish Prinveville Reservoir and Pelton Dam. I want to find other places for trout a little closer to Portland.
Looking forward to meeting you Thursday!
Kevin
-
Thanks for the offer Noah, but I Rawkfish is giving me a ride.
-
Sounds good. Has any one a reservation?
-
I would like to meet up with you guys this Thursday. I have to admit I went to the Sportsbar last time and wandered around for awhile. Not sure what to look for. Therefore, If you see a guy with a big Golden Retriever wave him down. I would like to put faces to the names.
Steve
-
I cant say for sure yet.... But I'm gonna try to make it. Should be a good time
-
I called and they don't take reservations but they do have a back room where they said we could pull a few tables together. Last meetup someone brought a NWKA flag on a pole. I don't have one but I do have a red Next Adventure bandana, I'll stick it on a pole and also will let the folks there know that the Kayak Fishermen are meeting so just ask at the desk.
Not sure if you can bring a Golden Retriever into the restaurant, but, hey, this is Portlandia, who knows.
See y'all there.

Well, Kevin.....it's your lucky day. http://www.dfw.state.or.us/fish/lets_go_fishing/index.asp (http://www.dfw.state.or.us/fish/lets_go_fishing/index.asp) ;D
Hey and for what its worth, I was also told by another kayaker earlier today (don't think he's on this forum though), that Swift Resevoir, which if I have the name right, is above Yale (?) and is really hot right now for all species. Again, for what its worth.
-
Swift is above Yale and I have also heard the fishing is good there. I have fished there in th past, but it is a long drive to get up to the lake. If you stop at Merwin or Yales, you get an extra hour of fishing in.
I do like to get out on the water so if you want to give it a try, I would go.
-
Hi all. I am planning on coming to the meet up tomorrow.
I do not have a boat yet, but hopefully soon.
I realized that it is just as important to have some people to go with so I'll see you there.

Wow! Fourteen showed up tonight.
Famous Dave's did an awesome job and the BBQ was super. What a great time. Hope to fish and crab with several NWKA'ers (wackers?) over the coming weeks.
Looks like Ndogg may be setting up a crabbing outing next Thursday. Speaking of Next, Next Adventure is planning monthly yak fishing outings possibly starting in December with a Sturgeon event.
If you haven't checked out "Is it local" (Portlandia on YouTube) it's a hoot. We need a mascot like Colin the organic chicken, maybe Seymour the fermented Willamette sturgeon.

It was great to meet you guys. Sorry I couldn't stick around for very long.

Anyone up for the 4th or 5th next week for a meet-up? I'd like to cast my vote for somewhere closer in to Portland this time. Blitz Ladd maybe.
-
I'm up for the 5th. Lots of new folks on the forum, hope to meet them.
I like Famous Dave's in Cascade Station, where's Blitz?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I agree about doing it in downtown PDX. It is more centrally located. It is also quite a bit closer for those that may want to come up from Salem. Blitz Ladd is at 2239 Southeast 11th Avenue, Portland, OR 97214. It is 1 mile from NA's Paddle ports Center.
I can make the 5th, but the 4th is my daughter's third birthday, so that is out.

+1 for Blitz or somewhere inner eastside of downtown..
p.s. Does anyone else smell Winter Steelhead?

Went to Pacific Sporting Goods in Camas yesterday. Steelhead "good" in Cowlitz, Lewis and Washougal. Bought some tackle and bait, tied leaders last night. May hit the mouth of the Washougal and Camas Slough area tomorrow. Anyone interested?

If the 4th was possible I'd prefert that date. Blitz Ladd is an awesome spot.

Actually, the Lucky Lab in Multonomah Village might be a good place too, especially for anyone coming up from the Salem area. 7675 Southwest Capitol Highway, Portland, OR. I could make that location on either the 4th or 5th.
-
Has anyone decided on a location for this Thursday's meetup? I can't do Wednesday as it is the Portland Chapter CCA meeting.
-
I'm good with Thursday too. I like the Lucky Lab in SE or Multnomah as previously mentioned, or Blitz Ladd in SE.

Let's do the Blitz Ladd since it's more central. See you all at 6ish on Thursday night. Who's coming?

I'll be there.

I'm out for this week, I've got a late appointment across town.

Does anyone have a specific reason that they can't do the Lucky Lab in Multnomah Village? Noah mentioned that he can only do that location and I'd like to check that place out. Is anyone against having it there? It is about as close to I-5 as Blitz Ladd is so it might be just as easy for those who are coming from a little ways away.

Lucky lab in Multnomah Village sounds great for Thursday. Should we meet at 6, 6:30 or 7???
-
Later is better since the traffic is pretty much over by 7pm but no harm in getting there early if the traffic isn't bad.
-
I may be able to make it this round. I'm finally able to stand up and not wobble like a drunk.
How's the walking distance from parking to sitting?
-
The Lab in MV does't have patio heaters like the one in SE, so if you're bringing your furry friends, better bring your SlayRide beanies and bundle up. I'm definitely in.

Sorry I did not get a chance to really sit down and talk with folks, but my son wanted to sit with his friend and of course kids wishes trump my own. I was really hoping to pick some of your brains on steelhead, springer and saltwater fishing. I guess I will have to wait for next month.

Is there a PDX meetup scheduled this Thursday? I can't find any posts on it. The Heroes on the Water guys are still in Chile until next week and I'm in Florida until Saturday. If there's no meetup scheduled this week, let me know if there's interest in meeting the HOW folks next week if they're available.

I don't think anything is planned. The sportsman's show is next week though and we can do a meetup there. This way we can all give into peer pressure and spend too much money on things we don't need and never knew we wanted.
I know several forum members will be there working too.
-
I'll be there looking. Lets have an Nwka flash mob. kidding.
If anyone wants to meet up though I'm in.
-
Cool, where and when is the show?
-
I for one would appreciate knowing when any NWKA folks will be at the show. I likely need to fly down to the bay area next week for a day or two. It would be cool if I could make that work with a visit to the show to say hey.
-
I already have my discount ticket. It goes from the 8 till the 12th. I am scheduled to work on the 9th and the 12th so I will go on any other day if we are going as a group. If not I am thinking the 10th so as to cut down on the crowds on the weekend.

I have to go to San Fran next week, too. But, I should be back by Thursday afternoon.
-
I could go on Saturday. :)
-
I'm going Sunday. Working long days and Saturdays until who knows when...
-
I will be there both Saturday and Sunday.
-
I will be there all weekend as well -want to get as many clinics in as I can and hope I can find a good deal on a bait caster rod/reel.
-
I will be there both Saturday and Sunday.
Me too. I'll be hanging out at the NA booth w/ the NA boyz. Hope to meet some of the PDX guys I haven't run into yet.
-
I'll be there on Sunday. Sure I'll pick up something out there at the booth.

The Heroes on the Water guys are back from Chile and I'm planning to meet them this week. Perhaps we can meet at or near the PDX Expo Center Thursday night during the Boat Show. Who's in?

I'd like to hear more about the organization.
That isn't my hood, so I don't know of much what's around there, but there's always Hooters in JB.
-
Any sacrifice for a good cause ;-)
Do they have a quiet area where we could hear the guys talk?

BSteves, ate there any spots at the show where we could hold a meeting?

It might be better to have the informational meeting at another location. I am planning on attending the show on Friday, and would rather not fork over the parking and admission fee just to hear the HOW guys. If I'm the only one, and it's more convenient for you all, then I will.
-
I can't do Thursday either.
-
Ok, maybe we should do the HOW meeting next week after the show is over. Would Thursday the 16th @ 7:00 work? Suggested locations?

There's are a few places (BJ's Brewpub, Hooter's, etc..) on Jantzen Beach but I've never been and I don't know what the seating options are like. Also, for us working at the show, we'll be there pretty late. As for places at the show itself, I don't recall the food court seating options.

I propose we meet the following week so everyone (particularly the "pros") can be there.

I saw very few booth babes. Maybe I was to distracted by the fishing and hunting stuff.

Allow me to narrator this picture for you: ;)
Ndogg's saying to himself.... "Jammer ripped one, damn that stinks!"
Jammer is trying to hold back the laughter...."I wonder if anyone noticed the bomb go off?"
Rawkfish....."Hey I'm still posing, take another picture of me, take another picture of me!!!!"
Zee thinking quietly......"That beer that just went by was in the wrong guys hand, it should be mine!"

Well maybe not! I just looked at the other pictures and Rawk looks the same in all of them. I dont think its Rawk at all but a wax figure from Madame Tussauds. Sorry I just could not help myself.

Very interested in the next meet-up. New to the site via visit at the show. When & where?
-
Looks like first Thursday is 3/1. Do we want to get the Heroes on the Water guys for this meetup or have a separate meeting? They have a facility with food in Troutdale area.

Did anybody read the article in Willamette Week about the reporter that went for a paddle in Lake Oswego?
I think that would be an excellent meet up venue one of these days when the monsoons subside.
The only bummer is the 400 yard slog for public access.
I'll bring the champagne, who's bringing the caviar?

I am so there! Even if the fish numbers are down due to them draining it last year I'm going to make some trips out of there just on principle!

I think we might just need to make a monthly meeting into an informal bass tournament later this year on Lake Oswego. The added hike to the boat launch will just add a new element of fitness to competition. I wonder when the largemouth* will be most active.
*I mean the fish and not the complaining Lake Oswego residents.

Here's the combo for access:

You got to love the Internet!
I do like this rule. I wish the state would copy it!
8. No wake enhancement devices of any kind are allowed on the lake. Boats with wake enhancement devices must have them disabled according to LOC approved guidelines by an LOC certified boat mechanic prior to being licensed. Owners of these boats must also sign an agreement not to use wake enhancement devices on the lake.

What's the dress code/theme for this bass tourney? 80's neon/acid washed or polo shirts (collar up) and ascots?
Any extra points awarded for "99%" safety flags?
FYI- I'm that guy that honks and/or yells "double turds" anytime I see someone on the tee in their backswing while driving by a country club. 👿
-
I think we all need wear radar reflector hats, for safety's sake.

I'm thinking NASCAR flags and mullets would be good required dress.

I did a little reading and it seems the regulations for Lake Oswego are a bit confusing. Of course, most of my reading about this has been based on comments on the Oregonian website article by obviously pro-Lake Oswego folk so take that with a grain of salt. Anyway, it seems the idea that Lake Oswego should be open to all boats is based on it being a navigable waterway. Given that residents have power boats on the lake, you would think that would be the case. However, "navigable waterway" as described by the state has a historical reference point to it such that if the waterway was navigable when Oregon became a state it is considered a navigable waterway. However, Lake Oswego wasn't created until after statehood and supposedly is exempt from being public in that way.

When in doubt, go to the source to increase the confusion:
http://www.oregon.gov/DSL/NAV/meanderedlakes.shtml (http://www.oregon.gov/DSL/NAV/meanderedlakes.shtml)
Sufficient evidence exists that the following lakes are also navigable:
Sucker lake (Oswego) to pre-dam level 405 acres.
I am not sure what this means in terms of access. Are you allowed in the middle of the lake?
-
Mark Hatfield got the lake designated as non-navigable when he was either Governor or Senator. Yes, he did have property on the lake....

So we seemed to have fallen out of the swing of getting these going. I'd like to get one going for the third Thursday of this month. Next week would be cool but I believe the PDX Boat Show is then and I wouldn't want to draw away from that. Any suggestions for a location? I must admit that I miss having them at the Pietro's Pizza even though the beer wasn't that great. There was always plenty of room and it seemed fairly easy to get to with plenty of parking. Family friendly was also a plus.
-
The boat show is this week, so I think the 17th would work.
-
I'm game, I miss having the old "meet ups". I'm always a sucker for a slice of Pietros thin crust pie. Lack of craft beer aside it does have the plus of having enough space to spread out and take over as many tables as we want and chat without getting in other diners or staffs way. Plus its lack of PDX hipness saves having to worry if will be to crowded due to being D&D game night or whatever.
-

Cool, I'm game for the 17th.

sounds good to me. Please post the location of where your going to meet. There is more than one in the area I'm sure. DH

Um, where is this mythical pizza joint with beer and D&D? Inquiring minds wanna know!!!

10300 Southeast Main Street, Milwaukie, OR 97222

Hours: Tuesday hours 11:00 am–11:00 pm

If Kai isn't wrestling that night, I'll head down. I really liked that venue 'cause I can bring the kids and there's plenty of room.

-
I'm closing down the shop that night but would definitely be interested in showing up. What time frame are we thinking?

The usual time is somewhere around 7pm.

Also, I should be able to make Pietros the 17th.

I'll be there.

For those who are new to the forum:
We like to have monthly meet-ups during the crummy-weather months since many of us do not get out on the water as much as we would like. Since we're not on the water we can at least talk about kayak fishing stuff and these meet-ups provide us with an opportunity to engage in said talking without getting the inevitable glazed-over or deer-in-the-headlights looks from the less fortunate people in our lives who don't enjoy the magical madness that is kayak fishing. These meet-ups are a great way to pick the brains of the veterans of the community. I know that I am much more likely to provide more detailed info to someone face-to-face over a beer than I would over the interwebs and I'm sure that the same goes for many other guys that know more than just a thing or two about kayak fishing this area. I and others have also brought in different rigs for fishing certain areas when people have asked. So don't be shy, everyone's welcome! Come hang out and chat. It's a great way to put names to faces.
-
And bring the biggest touch screen tablet device you own loaded with Navionics or similar charts, because if you buy lots of beers for the right people you can ascertain some sweet holes and save yourselves many days of beating dead water. DAMHIK
-
How late does it usually go? I have an event earlier that night but would like to attend if possible.
-
They usually last at least a couple of hours.
-
I'm in too.... See ya guys next Thursday at Pietro's
-
Bump. Do we need to call ahead and give these guys a heads up? I should be there around 700.
-
It seemed like every time we went there there was always lots of room so I don't think we need to. Watch, the one time we needed to call ahead is the time I said we didn't need to. ::)
-
Sorry I'm going to miss it this week, I'm in CA visiting the kiddos. If anyone wants to bring some HOW donations (waders, pfds, tackle, rods, reels, nets, etc.) I'm sure LingBanger, Wobbler or Noah will be happy to receive them for us. We can also take kayaks and trailers and give you a tax deductible receipt.
-
Looks like I'll be there.

For those of you coming from the west side, remember the Sellwood Bridge is closed.

We will also spend some time meeting new members and simply talking about what is going on in the other Portland area fisheries this time of year.

This thing with our NCKA brother Mooch has got me sick, he is a good dude, and a HOW volunteer even during his treatments.
So here's what's going to happen. I'm going to bring a donation jar to the meet up Tuesday at Next Adventure for Mooch and I'm going to put $100 in it. I'm calling on all you that plan on attending this event to match, beat, or give what you can. His family has outstanding medical bills and there's going to be funeral expenses.
I'll collect the donations, get a money order and send it down to HOW coordinator Don Anglin who will know where to forward the funds we have pulled together for Mooch. I talked with Don today and he was really shocked. He said he saw Mooch about a week and a half ago and he was having some difficulty walking, but was driving himself, so his condition must have really taken a sudden turn for the worse.
Thanks in advance for helping out,
Anthony

The final turn often doesn't take much time.
Mooch did a ton for many a yak angler and it would be an honor to be able to help his family with some bills. Great idea, Anthony.

What was the total take?

A huge thank you to everybody at the PDX meet-up last night for your amazing generosity. We collected over $400 for Joel!
I have the money order ready to go into the mailbox. I'm just awaiting word on whose name should go on the M.O. I don't want to put Mooch's name on there if nobody has power of attorney. Frank (the guy who posted up about his entering hospice) is supposed to get back to me shortly.
Thanks again guys, you're awesome!

Just a reminder about next weeks PDX meet up / PDX Fishery of the Month..
May 21st 7pm @ Next Adventure Paddle Sports Center
Kevin "YakBasser" will be talking about bass fishing in the Portland area.
Expect a bit of a presentation followed by some Q&A discussion. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we'll have an on the water bass fishing gathering the following weekend.

Are we still planning on meeting at Sellwood Riverfront Park Saturday Morning for some bass fishing???
-
I plan on being there bright and early. Remember it is free fishing weekend so if you have a friend who is interested in kayak fishing don't forget to bring them along.
-
Regarding Saturday's bass fishing gathering...
My plan for tomorrow is to meet up in the Sellwood area early enough to try and get a bit of the morning bite before I have to help out with the Ocean Kayak booth at the Next Adventure Demo Day at 10 am. Those that want to check out the paddle demo are welcome to do so (it's free) and I think it would really us promote kayak fishing and NWKA if we had a bunch of rigged kayaks show up on the beach at some point. But the paddle demo runs well into the afternoon so everyone should feel free to fish as long as they want.
I'll probably launch from the Sellwood Waterfront Park where the demo is being held, but for those of you on the west side, the Willamette Park Boat ramp might be a better option. From there we'll probably explore and fish the area around Ross Island.

Does anyone know if the "free fishing weekend" applies to non-residents ? If it does I should probably bring my Outback and a few poles--eh ?

I'll probably be there around 6:30AM I live about 3 minutes away , so Ill see you guys there!! Looking forward to it. Water temps are hovering around 58 degrees , turbitidy is pretty high, the river level is up a few feet from the begining of the month. Air temps will be in the low 50's early in the AM warming to the mid 60's by lunch time, the sun will be out so all in all it looks to be a pretty fantastic day of fishing. See you out on the water!!

I'll be putting in at Williamette Park, arriving at the launch as close to daybreak as I can manage, ~5:30a. Bernie, thanks for the fishing conditions update. See you all on the water! Let's go catch some smallies!

Man.... I really wanna go fishing tomorrow... see y'all when you get in. I would recommend/request as many folks use Willamette as possible as parking at Sellwood is going to be rough with the event

Feels like that time of year again! How about the second Wednesday or Thursday of December? Any ideas for locations? I like the Lucky Lab pubs in SE or SW.

Old market pub in SW is good, tons of room. Plus it's right by my house :) lucky lab never has tables.

Old market pub in SW is good, tons of room. Plus it's right by my house :) lucky lab never has tables.
They have good beer? ;D
Sure do! Just crappy food ;)
-
I like both of those places. Also like Base Camp is another great place with good beer, but I don't think they have much in terms of food.
-
Come on boys! Lets get together and share some food and fish stories before the holidays. Beer and company who gives a crap about the food quality.
-
I forgot that I've got meetings all next week, I'd be game for the 17th or 18th. Might be better weather wise too, or could be worse.
-
17th is good for me.

17th is good for me.
I reserved us a table at old market pub at 6:00 on December 17th. It's under Noah/NW Kayak Anglers. I believe it will be one long table just off the bathrooms. I heard Nate wants to buy the first round too.

I should be able to make it.

If Nate's buying, then I am in. See you all there.

He's such a great guy! ;D

Me too. I forgot I have a company Xmas party on Tuesday.
-
I'll be out of town by Thursday.
-
I leave town for a few weeks and now I am on the hook for beers. At least you chose a place within stumbling distance of my house. See you on tuesday.

No, what about January 23rd at Buffalo Wild Wings out by the airport? Figure move it closer to the Vancouver guys for this one. Plus it's right by my office :)
-
Plus it's right by my office :)
Even if it is by your office I bet you still won't be able to make it.
I have an even better idea. How about we have a meetup at Next Adventure ? We are planning on hosting a mirage drive, kayak and reel maintenance clinic next week. Once we have the date nailed down we will post with more details.

You would have to have it at Noah's office for him to make it. Even then he'd probably have to continue to get work done and wouldn't be able to talk.

I didn't say I could make it, just that we should have it there ;
I'm hoping to get back on the water sometime soon!
-
I met a gentleman at the boat show from down in the valley that wants to meet the crew. I don't know if he's interested in Hobie maintenance?
I'll watch, in case I ever have to fix one???
There's always the sweet merch to peruse.

We'll talk about other types of maintenance too, not just mirage drives.

was there a time nailed down on this yet? if work permits, I would like attending.
-
We will be doing a clinic on January 30th at 7 PM.

Hey everyone, lets do this!! I'm dusting off this thread and throwing my vote in! Old Market Pub in SW, Jan 15th or Jan 22nd. I miss you guys! ;D
-
Either one will work or me.
-
The 15th works for me.
Wobbler
-
Either day sounds good. I would like to join in. Hoping for doc OK to start paddling again on the 14th.
-
New guy on the block so I will do my best to make it
-
Either should work for me.
-
I should be able to do either
-
Lets settle on the 15th then. 7-ish?
HEY NEWBIES!! This is an awesome chance for you to meet NWKA people in the Portland area! Come hang out and have a beer or some tots while we talk about all the fish we will catch when the weather starts playing nice.
See you all then!
-
Jeff, are we meeting at the Old Market Pub in Southwest?

I guess so. I didn't see any objections to it.
-
I'm gonna be down there this week.
-
Awesome Rev, will see you there.

Nice!
-
A little "Bump" as a reminder for those wanting to meet up tomorrow night. See y'all there.
-
I'll be in the shop until seven but I'll try and head out early to get out there
-
I hope to make it
-
I'll be there early for some dinner.
-
You guys must really like the beer here cause I have yet to eat something good here. :)
-

If you are at the Old Market Pub, I concur. The beer there is average at best, but it is quasi centrally located and has room.
-
Thanks for the hospitality guys!
-
Sorry I missed you guys last night, I had to work late.
Yeah the food at OMP is usually in the bad range, some items are okay at best. I try to stick to simple items that are hard to screw up. Their salads are okay or something like nachos. Mr. Toad's red ale is pretty good but the rest are okay at best. The biggest upside is that it's a 1/4 from my house :)
-
It was awesome seeing everyone there last night! Thanks guys!
-
Sorry I missed it. I went out with Wobbler yesterday and he wore me out.
-
Ironic that I seem to work every meet up except maybe one that involves fishing. Sorry I missed you guys, since the company was probably a hell of a lot better than the food.
Hugh

I'm glad I had the opportunity to meet some of you. And I got some good information, too - thanks!.

I had their Multnomah Village Golden Ale, and the huge Reuben. Both were top notch to me.
Maybe I have a less picky palette or something?
Good to see you guys none the less. :occasion14:
-
The food may not be excellent, but it is a decent place to meet up and close to a lot of people on the west side.
Rev, next time you come down you should try the Thirsty Lion. Excellent food imo.
-
I'll try it before I leave town. Suggestions on what to order?

+1. Ain't nothin' better than a boiled egg wrapped in pork sausage and deep-fried.
-
Yea it was great seeing everyone again.
-
Man, I can't believe I missed this by a few days. I'm relatively new to Portland and would love to meet some local kayak anglers. Oh well, there is always next month.
-
We don't typically schedule the meetups during summer months because it is usually harder to get a decent turnout, but there isn't any harm in asking if people are down to get one going.
-
We still need to do a Lake Oswego meet up We could make it look like a Bernie Sanders rally so if they try and stop us we can say they are violating our freedom of speech.
-
I'm all for a lake oswego meet-up, I've wanted to try fishing that for a while, it's public according to the law as far as I know, is there an issue with getting on the lake?
John
-
I fished there years ago on shore and an officer told us to leave. Might be different if your on a kayak in the middle lake though lol... Big crappie there btw.
Snamighty
-
It is surrounded by private property. One of the ways people try to access it is over the railroad tracks. To do so means you were trespassing on rail property. If I were fishing that area, I would hit George Rogers park on the Willamette for bass. They drained the lake a couple years ago, so I doubt it would even be worth fishing.
-
That's kind of the point of going there. The water is public.
-
Every summer a few paddlers of various sorts make a point of getting out on Lake O to push the public/private debate. Public access is available at the very NE corner of the lake where there is a plaza that has steps down into the lake, right downtown on Hwy 43.
Some Lake O people will swear that the entire lake, including the water, is private; the Clackamas Co sheriff's office has stated they will not get involved in disputes about boats on the lake - they will investigate trespass claims only on land. Whether it is worth the hassle is up to you.
-
I'm a retired army guy who hates it when people tell me I can't use public property, life's no fun if you can't stir the pot once in awhile. :P

Interesting. I actually read the whole article too. I can see both sides of this one. But basically if it's public property then it's public property and limiting access to public property is generally frowned upon by state governments, is it not? Anyway, lots of nearby public water to access, although not a lot of lakes within a short distance of Portland.
-
I understand that if it is public, it should be open to the public. However, I personally wouldn't waste my time fishing a lake that was empty 2 years ago when there are some nice bass right across highway 43 in the Willamette. Plus in the evenings during the summer, the scenery can be quite nice. ;D

And rumor has it, the O lake is seriously polluted.

Have to say, I do enjoy the # of paddleboarders out by Willamette Park or Sellwood, don't seem to get much fishing done tho ::)
-
Actually, Sellwood Bridge or George Rogers Park are great prime spots for fall sturgeon. I usually fish there yearly starting mid October off the shore, but this year I'm planning to try it out off a kayak. Oh cdat, thanks for your service by the way. I'm also an army vet (but not retired) so I know the feelings and frustration of not being able to fish where its supposedly public...so stir the pot!! lol
-
Do you guys fish the Wilsonville Canby area?
