Please keep your eyes out for a 2017 ivory dune (gray) Hobie Outfitter. My son’s was stolen last night in Bellingham. We’ll be scanning Craigslist and local pawn shops but I suspect they’ll dump it once they find it difficult to offload without the drives.

I have the serial number but my optimism for ever seeing that boat again is pretty low. Kinda feels like a pet died…

Because the yak is now missing a drive unit, whomever ends up with it will need to buy a mirage drive. And that could mean they will most likely be checking local and instate sources for that drive unit. I would contact all the dealers that sell mirage drives and alert them to your loss and for them to be on the lookout for anyone that just coincidently needs a new drive.

As we all know, unless you yard sale and drop a complete drive in the ocean, most anything that can go wrong with the drive can be fixed with replacement parts....no need for an entire new unit. Due to the cost of a drive, the buyer would most likely use a credit card for a potential ID of the perp.  Maybe the dealer could covertly get their license plate number as a backup. Never know, you may crack a major crime syndicate.

I use that strategy on my Polaris 6 wheeler. Always leave the seat stored in a safe place away from the machine. Anyone robbing me will need to purchase a new complete seat. We only have a handful of dealers in all of Alaska so it would be easy to alert all of them to give me a heads up if someone is looking to buy a seat.

Just a thought. You never know where a "lead" might lead you.

Great points!

I assumed they’d dump the yak once they realized they couldn’t sell it easily. I’ll have my son connect with -local Hobie dealers. Given it’s a tandem, they’d need to drop $1400 on new drives. They probably could have picked up a used model for about that much without resorting to the whole thieving thing.
