Looking very smooth and calm plus soft tides, planning to be out there both days, trolling for salmon and then probably bottom fishing at Simpson Reef. Give me a shout if you are out there, 16 or 69.

I don't have any salmon reports from the area but sounds like the ling/rockfish bite has been good. All of my cabezon have come before July 1, so I am really hoping to finally get a nice one that I can retain.

cheers, roger

I'll be there, arriving a later in the day tomorrow after securing campsite and hopefully get a half day in on the 8th and full day 9th. Thanks for the heads up!

great reports of salmon at 85' (2-3 miles out) earlier in the week but sadly they had moved farther offshore. 7 hours out both days, we got to 5 miles out (125') on Saturday but the powerboats catching fish were another 5 miles out. 'Mzungu19' (Ted) hooked his first ocean salmon, about a 6# coho that went airborne by his yak, under the bow and jumped on the other side and swam away. My only takedown didn't stick.

met lots of kayak folks both days, conditions were great.

I took home 12 heavy crab and 8 black rockfish (biggest 20"), could not find any lings or cabbies.

Two negatives- the launch part of Sunset Bay Day Use area changed to open "Dawn to Dusk" in about 2017 specifically to make sure the gate was open earlier in the summer months. State Park folks have decided that 8am is early enough to open the boat launch area, I do not agree.  Locking the gate to the launch parking area doesn't keep people from sleeping overnight in the parking areas outside the gate, there were 2 cars 'camping' there Saturday morning at 7am when we carried our yaks over the rocks from the 'always open' parking area to launch at 7am. All locking the gate does is keep people paying to camp and following the rules from accessing the boat launch at dawn.

Second issue was that one of my pots left out overnight was gone. We both had it waypointed and was only 50 yards from another of my traps, just gone, has my name and phone number on it, maybe someone that 'accidently' picked it up will call me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Nice flat looking ocean.
Bonus of crabs and black rock fish sounds like a fun time and enough seafood to get your teeth dirty a couple times.
Cheers :)

This was my first trip(s) out of Sunset Bay. Great launch and good haul of ling, rockfish and crab. Learned lots on this adventure to improve future trips!
Did you know that games clip can come undone if you have too many fish on them? Yep they come undone and then you dont have the problem of too many fish!!
Really enjoyed meeting all of the kayakers on the beach and on the water!!
The gate issue was a bummer and did delay depatures on both days.  Going to go back again when conditions permit.
