I'm just about all healed up and I got a clean bill of health from the doctor so I need to get out and do some fishing (with lots of sunscreen on).  It looks like I missed a couple of nice ocean days this past weekend so I am thinking of going to Tillamook Bay.  Its about a 10 AM low so no need to leave at the "ass-crack" of dawn for us inlanders.

Ass crack of dawn like 8am, or 430am?

I am pretty sure I have all my essential gear figured out again since my junk hasn't seen salt in 2.5 years.

Where are you launching from?

Sorry for my ignorance. Will this be a bay adventure or will you go out to the ocean from Garibaldi?
What are the target species?

I’m near Depoe Bay and I’d really like to know more about all of the fisheries within 90 minutes.  T bay is interesting but admittedly, I know very little about it.

Thanks

No worries...  This is bay only.  We will be targeting rockfish (although Lingcod is not out of the realm of possibility). We generally stick to the south jetty but there are fish at the north jetty also.  You can also catch some pile perch at the Coast Guard station too.  You can drop a crab pot or 2 also.

For tackle you want to go LIGHT!  I usually go with 1/8 oz jighead with 2in Gulp minnow.  You want a slow fall.  The quality of fish may not be the best (kinda on the small side) but when the bite is on you wont be able to keep them off your hook.  You can also go with a couple dropper loops and small hooks with sandshrimp or clam strips to get some greenling or striped perch.

I will most likely wander down there myself.

I think I can get enough done by then to get a pass!

Edit: clams can be had if you launch a little early and there super easy cjweinhe can attest to that. So push off 0700-0730 for clams 0800 just to fish.

Is anyone going gonna target perch much, or has had good luck for em in the past?
Last time I was there, I put considerable effort into it, and caught a bunch, but nothing over 5". Not sure what I was doing wrong...
I will likely join y'all. I have a ton of crab bait, enough to share, if anyone needs.
A day without fishing probably wouldn't kill me,
but why risk it?

I usually stop at the old Coast Guard boathouse on the way back in and try my luck.  If you have a shrimp gun hit the beach first for some bait.  Sometimes I do good with the pile perch and other times I can't get them to bite at all.

Crabs are molting so they’ll be light, reports are not catching a lot, going to be windy so I’m not even going to drop a trap this trip.

Had a decent day on the bay yesterday.  Everyone caught fish.  It wasn't lights out fishing but it was still pretty good.  Wind picked up around noon.  Mojo and I headed in to the old Coast Guard boathouse to try for Pile Perch.  We had a couple of nibbles but no takers.  We didn't really have the right tackle for it.
