Pepper and I have released a fair number of cabezon since we started this crazyness in 2019, either before July 1 and after a Fall quota closure but I have never been able to retain one to achieve that 'full' bottom fishing limit.  Until today.  We launched out of Sunset Bay and fished between Shore Acres and Simpson reef, fairly close to shore.

7oz Lancer's copper water dog took both lingcod and the cabezon!

swells were a bit steeper than expected but not a problem for the Outback, we rocked the ocean for almost 6 hours, really cool "fog rainbow" over Simpson Reef early as we were passing the glass house.

this is Pepper's "gotta go pee, reeeeally gotta go pee" look.

final stats- 11# teal cabezon, 12.5# teal ling, 5.5# brown ling, and 3 black rockfish (plus 1 that I used as live bait).

So did you get the poor girl ashore?
Everything will be all right in the end, so if it's not all right, then it's not yet the end.

yes but it was total chaos at Sunset Bay, we had to delay for several dogs to clear the launch area and parking was overflowing onto the road.

hey, are these the famous toxic eggs that cabezon have?  or can I salt them down and top some sushi with them?  lol

Good job sir! Ya did better than I did.
A day without fishing probably wouldn't kill me,

yes but it was total chaos at Sunset Bay, we had to delay for several dogs to clear the launch area and parking was overflowing onto the road.

But it was an EMERGENCY, Mr. Dodger and there's a sandbar handy...  The chaos sounds like any hot summertime day in Coos Bay these days, more's the pity.

Sounds like a very fine day at the reef, 'though.  Great job - and I hope I can make the journey at least one more time.

I say, go ahead and give the eggs a try and let us know how it works out...  Hee-hee.

Really nicely done.
Everything will be all right in the end, so if it's not all right, then it's not yet the end.
