I am going to be in Sandpoint this weekend and was wondering if it will be worth hauling a Yak the 900 mile round trip.  I would love to catch a giant rainbow from my Kayak and was wondering if and where they may be biting.

Thanks,

Craig

I was just up at my folks place last weekend, and it was slooow. We didn't fish the big lake, but tried on a couple other smaller lakes all for nada. My buddies up there have said that they haven't been catching anything lately. The water level in LPO is way down, also.
Although, even if you're not catching, those nice shiny wood yaks would sure look good slicing across the big lake!

P.S. Saw a pic and heard a story about a biiig pike coming out of a lake up there, no one would confirm which lake, but it still had ice on it  ;).

Thanks Jonah.

Pike are good, or better yet, a walleye or two.  I'd be happy with that.  I was looking for fishing reports online and was not able to find any.  The question is if I signed up for the AOTY, which I planned to do anyway, and i pushed my yak out on the ice and sat in it, would that count? ;D Just kidding.

Also, the weather does not look to be so great there this weekend.

Yeah, it's kind of in the doldrums right now up there. There are always some big kamloops in there, be ready to troll deep and cover a lot of water. I'd try dragging a Rapalla around some of the points in the Hope area, and there are some neat places to paddle to from the Bayview area also.

Kayaks work on water, fish are in the water, ice is water.  I see no issue with ice fishing on a kayak.  Could be more comfortable side saddling it, than sitting on the ice.

2010 Angler of the Year Rules

1. All fish entered must be caught from a kayak, without the aid of a powerboat and using methods deemed legal by the state in which they are caught.

Nothing about having to actually have the kayak floating in water.

I didn't have to worry about it.  There is no ice anywhere I have been, and I haven't had enough time to fish.  I did get a quick paddle in and was able to test out the new wheel-ez cart. It came in real handy since I had to walk across, or should I say through, about 150 yards of muck  to get to the waters edge since the river was so low.  It floated the yak nicely on top of the sticky muck so it should be awesome on sand.  It is just the standard cart with the smaller balloon tires.  Next Adventure had a bunch on close-out a couple weeks ago for $89 so I figured I'd give one a try.
