Soooo.

They had whole mackerel at new seasons today.

I had never seen it or heard of it other than smoked, so I figured why not.  I bought one for about 1.50.

I think my brined herring would taste better.

Does anyone actually eat this stuff or did the bait truck get lost on the way to Fishermans?

I would much rather be up a creek without a paddle than down one.

There was a very plentiful supply of macks off the coast this summer.  I had not caught them in the ocean since kayak fishing down in SoCal.  The only thing we used them for down there was bait.  People from the Filipino or Vietnamese communities would love to catch them off the piers by the bucket load and make soup out of them.  I will say though that mackerel is one of my favorite choices when it comes to sushi.  Here's one from this summer.

Mackerel are one of my favorite fish! They are wonderfully flavorful and oily ... the big thing is they spoil very quickly so you need to eat them quick.
If you like strong flavored fish you will like mackerel. If sole is your favorite fish you will likely not like mackerel.

How do you usually cook them?

I was a little dubious about them not being gutted.  Is that normal?

Yup perfectly normal for them to be in the round. I really like to grill them with just salt and pepper.

Only macks I've eaten are spanish macks.  Those are quite tasty as long as you eat them fresh.  I just cook them up in a skillet with olive oil salt and pepper.

I love eating and catching mackerel. Deep fried whole. I really miss catching them on light tackle.

Showed my wife this picture. She said I need to go catch her some next year.

When I visit my brother in Nova Scotia we barbeque them. We don't have a problem with oily fish because of our Scandinavian background. I'm not sure if it is the same species.
