Well, I had to try to get one while the Columbia is still open cause I have been catching so many in the Willamette in the last few months. I anchored upstream of the mouth of the Willamette and a giant 300+ ft ship, escorted by six tugs anchored right next to my float. I pulled out immediately and went downstream to join about seven boats. Everybody I talked to said they hadn't caught a thing. I anchored up behind them with no expectations of catching anything. After about 20 minutes I got hit hard and brought to the kayak this nice little 40". Now I don't have to join the madness if the Willamette opens for a couple of days this year!

Nice fish! Love it when the kayakers out fish the power boaters.
What were they chomping on today? Roll mop herring?

This is from the ODFW

Effective January 1, 2013 until further notice, sturgeon retention will be prohibited in this area.  Fishery managers are expected to consider a retention season for this area at a Compact/Joint State hearing scheduled for Wednesday January 30, 2013 at the Sheraton Portland Airport Hotel (8235 Northeast Airport Way Portland, Oregon) to discuss commercial and recreational seasons for spring chinook and sturgeon.

to answer RR's question, I was fishing with green label herring, cut in half, marinated in Sturgeon Feast and secured with stretchy thread. This is the only bait I ever use and I always catch sturgeon when I go out fishing for them. Not that there might be something better, I have just decided that I have no need to try anything different because they will always bite this.

I love using sturgeon feast. Awesome scent. I also marinade my smelt in it. Works like a charm.
