Title: East Coast Adventures (Pic Heavy)
Post by: YakBum on November 19, 2014, 08:41:06 AM
It's been a while since I gave much of an update so I'll jam 2 chapters of fishing into one post.
to start off I finally found some success down in VA Bass fishing on a small reservoir.  my dad came down for a visit and I schooled him on it, 6 fish to none.  made a video too.  being that the Army wont ship kayaks over 14 foot, had to get a smaller yak so I got a 2015 revo 13.  bought it on a Wednesday, rigged it Thursday and Friday after work, used it on Sunday (Its awesome!!) shipped it to Germany on Monday.

seriously tho, i just did some photoshop juju and created it
Having finished up in VA, and 4 weeks to chill before I cross the big pond, after getting the boss' permission of course, I headed up to Pulaski, NY for a week of steelhead fishing.  haven't gotten rid of the Addy yet, ( it goes on Friday, with my car as a package deal to my cousin) I took that up there to piddle around with.  turned out to be more of a prop than anything as it was fairly shallow, so I was towing it behind me more than moving around on it.   the first day I beat the water with my fly rod,  no success whatsoever.  the fish were in thick too, schools of steelhead like the schools of chum out there.  that's where the similarities stopped however.  they were just as fickle as ever.  the guy I was staying with hooked me up with a spinning rod and egg sacs, once I had that I caught some fish, had a few more on.  the bite was super subtle so you had to pay full attention the entire time,  the hit would be the tiniest bump that felt a little different from the bottom.  if you didn't quite pay close enough attention you'd just end up with an empty egg sac.  over the next four days I caught 3 more fish.  the weather took a turn for the cold and snowy, going from mid 50's and sunny down to low 30s and snow.  it was an exercise in endurance, when I thought my feet couldn't get any colder they somehow managed to.   anyway after much ado, here's some gratuitous fish porn

hope you enjoyed, that will be the last i get out before the european adventure.  there will be a long dry period as it takes a 40 hour course to get a fishing license and it's also winter.  that'll only stop me if the water is frozen tho.

there will be a long dry period as it takes a 40 hour course to get a fishing license . . . . .
Yikes!  I look forward to a description of the course, and hope you manage to pass.

Nice report and good luck over there. I wonder how a 40 hour course to get a fishing license would fly here in the Northwest.

Great report.  You got to love how the Great Lakes have better salmon and steelhead fishing than we do.

yea its all right, biggest problem is with so few places on the east coast to fish for those guys, they get hit hard.  It is difficult to find somewhere all to yourself.  great lakes salmon and steelhead also don't taste any where near as good as west coast fish

Yo! It looks like you're still knocking them out. Nice photos. Where in Germany? Was stationed in Schweinfurt myself. Not good for fishing. You'll have to substitute beer guzzling for fishing.

going to baumholder, I will be 30 minutes from france and 30 minutes from luxenbourg, the wife is pretty excited about the 4 hour drive to Paris ha.  And you know I wont last long if I cant go fishing,  if I guzzled beer with the fervor that I fish i'd be fat and dead in 6 months.

I lived about 2 hours from Baum when I was over there.   I highly recommend checking out Aachen and cologne.
