Title: Official Announcement Salmon SlayRide Derby
Post by: kykfshr on August 07, 2012, 10:46:30 AM
It's a go for the Salmon Tournament in September.  It will be held on Saturday September 22, prime time for the lower bay.  This Fishery has been closed to Chinook retention for some time and having it open provides a great opportunity for us.  These fish are heading up the Chehalis which is nicknamed "the little Kenai" by some of the local guides and for good reason with fish in the 30 to 50 pound range being caught and released while fishing for Coho.  This year we get to keep them.  I am looking forward to this one

ENTRY FEE:  $15

ALL PROCEEDS TO BENEFIT THE WASHINGTON CHAPTER OF HEROES ON THE WATER

The Launch location will be the Johns River boat launch.  This will give the closest access for us to the best fishing in the lower bay.  Event starts at first light and weigh in closes at 4:00PM.

The Westport Inn www.westportwamotel.com (http://www.westportwamotel.com) will be the event headquarters.  They have a nice banquet room (Coho Hall) that we can use.  Rates are $25 for tent sites, $33 for RV, and $99 for rooms.  When making reservations let them know your with NWKA for the derby.  Westport Inn phone number is (360) 268-0111.

There is also a Salmon festival on Saturday.  Here is a message about the Salmon Tales Festival from Mike at the Chamber of Commerce who has been a tremendous help with planning and is also donation the two night oceanfront condo Prize.

Anglers

While you are here on the 22nd derby there will be a festival in Wesport celebrating salmon.  During "Salmon Tales" which will be on the grounds of the Maritime Museum from 11-4.  There will be vendors, music, beer garden and a smoked salmon competition.  Attached is an info sheet below.  The Maritime Museum is within walking distance from the Wesport Inn where you may be staying.  Have great tourney and if back in time stop by the festival, have a beer and tell a few tales of your own!

This sounds great and after I missed ORC this year it's good to have another tournament to attend.

However, in my pre-preemptive move to put this on my family's online planning calander before my wife could sign us up for something else first, I noticed/remembered that September 22nd is my daughter's 3rd birthday.   So, enjoy your salmon fishing tournament and try not to be jealous of the totally awesome princess themed birthday party I get to attend.

I'm tentative, pending discussions with SWMBO and a look at my study schedule for the PE exam.  If I go, it'll probably be my only fishing between now and November.

If I go I would probably tent it.  Hopefully the whole family would come.

Did you do the mechanical exam?

If you have a 7 foot medium action rod that you're holding at a 35 degree angle off the water, pointed at 80 degrees toward the bow, and the fish is stripping line off a reel with the drag set at 9#, what is the rotational force being applied to the kayak and how much more would it take to tip an Ocean Kayak Ultra 4.3 over carrying a 6'3", 225# man.

Where is Grays Harbor and why does this have to be on the closing weekend of Archery Season?

Grays Harbor is 50 miles west of Olympia,Washington. To get to Johns River follow the hiway signs to Westport,go about 12 miles west of Aberdeen, and the river is just past Ocean Spray Cranberry plant and you're there.Take a left turn on John's River Road (across the street from John's River Tavern) and follow the road to the left down to the boat launch.

Kykfshr----is there an "offical" sign-up ? Count me in for sure......
What do you need help with ?
Let folks know and we can make this another great derby.

Twin Harbors campground is my fave.....I usually try to get the end spot or the one next to it in the center section of sites in the area next to the beach.  The showers work well, the facilities are pretty clean, and it is close to everything.  This will be a great event!

Conflicting info from the park and from the State Park reservation system.  Will try to get the park desk to make  the reservation for Sept 19-22,so those who want to come early for scouting etc can set up.  OK with whoever is heading this effort?  Will wait to call  until I hear.

You're talking about the group campsite right?  Usually you can make group site reservations outside of the standard dates they have for the rest of the campground.
Title: Re: Official Announcement Salmon SlayRide Derby
Post by: kallitype on August 16, 2012, 04:41:41 PM
I talked live to the reservation 888 number---- they said one would have to go through the campground itself, as the campground told the reservation system to cut it off the 15th of September.

  Who is coordinating the derby??

Jealous!!!!!  That was a hugely productive fishery when I lived in Ocean Shores...when you were allowed to fish it.  We always had a MUCH harder time catching cohos than the Kings for some reason.  Big Beautiful fish.

Although you won't need it because I am sure other boats will be out there but for those who have never fished Grays Harbor and specifically the Johns River area, my advice is to get a Bathymetric chart and study it.  The harbor is really a flooded river estuary.  From a kayak you won't have the luxury of running around in a powerboat looking for the edges of the channels.

Here's a fish from Sept 24...a long time ago...2006...holy outdated picture....I wouldn't count on the weather being this nice though...

Kardinal that has been my experience there also.  Those kings are much more willing to bite than the cohos.

Back to civilization for a couple days.  I have tried to get the group site reserved at twin harbors through the reservation line, by calling the park directly, and stopping by in person. It is available as of right now but it's first come first serve after Sept. 15.  Not the best for planning though.

Today I got a donation of some prizes from the Dennis Company here in Raymond. The manager was very cooperative and responded as soon as I gave him the request for donations.Besides that,he mentioned that he was out with his son last weekend kayaking North River.I don't know if he frequents this site or not,but I certainly invited him to come aboard.
So to add to the pot of prizes for contestants, the Dennis Company donated a couple of Pro Troll SpinRay Flashers and a few Big Al's Fish Flash flashers.
I would ask our members to shop at their stores that are located in Raymond,Aberdeen,Montesano,Elma, and Long Beach,Washington. They have a good selection of gear, reasonable prices, and are located on the way to the coast for those of us fishing out this way. Thanks for the donation Dennis Co.We appreciate your help to make this derby as good as we can make it.

Please bear with us over the sign up button I think Alan has been busy and we are going to try and keep the cost as low as we can.

Updated my first post so check it out.  Will be using the Westport Inn in town for lodging and event headquarters. They have tent sites , RV spots and rooms, as well as a banquet room that we can use after the derby.

Start time will be first light and weigh in closes at 4:00PM.

Pre-register on Friday night at the Westport inn or at the Johns River boat launch with me before fishing.  I will be there before the sun comes up.

I'm getting excited about this!  Although I've never fished this way and suck at the cutplug method, (anybody wanna post a vid or picture lesson for us?)  Anyhow I'm in.

Come on Rev, it won't be that much and the prizes can offset the cost, I might come in that Friday, would like to hit the fishery sooner to dry to get a feel for it.

Group campsite will be at the Westport inn in town.  Give them a call to reserve a site.   They have a big area set aside for us to use.  There is also the option of staying in a room or RV spot.  Mark the owner has been very helpful and is also donating 2 nights at his hotel for a prize.  The Westport inn has a banquet room that is available for use for after the event on Saturday.

I called Westport Inn to reserve a campsite.  The guy on the phone talked me out of it.  When I told him about the event, he asked where we'd be launching from. When I told him John's River launch ramp he suggested camping at Twin Harbor State Park.  He said it was much nicer for camping and a lot closer to our launch site.  Yes, he'd heard of the Kayak Fishing event on 9/22, but said that without an R/V it won't be much fun camping at the parking lot at the Inn.  ???

Did anyone else encounter the same issue?

I was not talked out of it, but signed up for it because I want to camp with the group.  I prefer the Twin harbor park to just about anything over there, but still hope that the Inn's campsite will be enjoyable.  I will still make the 8min drive to the Twin Harbor showers if there are none to use at Westport Inn.

Nope, he mentioned someone named Mike (I think) knew more about the kayak fishing event, he'd only heard of it.  I think he was just trying to save me the disappointment of camping in a parking lot.

If my wife and little ones go we will be getting a room.  Did you check out their website?  I scouted out all locations in August and the Hotel looked to be decent.  Here are some pics of the area set aside for us.  No it isn't like the state park but it gives accommodation options for everyone and for those that will be accompanying but not fishing the derby it is nice that it is right in town.

Our sponsor who will be running the weigh in station is changing the location.  The new location is going to be at the gazebo on the east edge of the Maritime Museum grounds in Westport and he will be there until 5pm. So weigh in will stay open until five for you hardcore guys.  Attached is a pic.

I assume there's no problem if I launch and return from the Westport boat ramp instead of the river launch site at the state park.

See the curent issue of Reel NEws---2 articles on the Grays Harbor opener, one by John Keizer and one (I think) by Tony Floor----Floor says the north channel is seriously underfished, it's along the Bowerman Basin "and a few wharfs along the north side of the north channel all the way east to the mouth of the Little Hoquiam river.  Few boats fish this area and it can be very very good".
That said, I think Lake Sylvia is a lot closer to that area than Twin Harbors, I'm  thinking to camp there instead.

Neither one gives much info about stage of the tide, etc. but usually in estuaries, it's the last hour of the flood and slack tide, that brings the fish in .

Title: Re: Official Announcement Salmon SlayRide Derby
Post by: kallitype on September 16, 2012, 10:26:04 PM
Outdoor emporium, Sportco, etc etc---most decent fishing shops, here's a note on GH:

Water depth & current also will determine your method of fishing.  Take Grays Harbor Chinook for instance.  In the south channel near Johns River these fish will be located on the bottom, but here the bottom will vary from 15" to 25'.  Then if you move over into the main channel off the port docks & near the 101 bridge, water depths are in the 40' mark & the fish appear to run about mid depth.

Time & Tides :   Most fishermen will tell you that the catching occurs from the last 2 hours of the incoming high tide and about 2 more hours after the flood.  However as mentioned before it can be worthwhile to fish the final outgoing & into the low slack.   The thinking here is that the fish will be swimming upstream into the out-flowing water, & not being swept in by the incoming tide that seems to be the common perception.  Trolling is usually be best with the tide up until about low slack tide & then the troll becomes both directions at tide change.    On some shallow estuaries with a narrow river channel, on a low tide, the water area has shrunk considerably and this then concentrates the fish in the channels or holes that are left which can prove beneficial to the fisherperson.

However as with many fisheries, the fish sometimes write their our timetables & they have been caught on any time of the tide.

It also makes a difference if the weather is dry for some time, or if it has been raining.  If it has been dry, then the fish tend to stack up in the bay waiting for a rain, waiting for a shot of fresher, cooler water.  When it starts to rain, even slightly, they will move thru & upriver rather rapidly.

Methods of Fishing - Coho :   The bulk of the Coho do not enter the bay until about mid September & later.   Usually by this time the commercial gill nets move in &  things become congested.  However most of these Coho appear to be non-biters for the sports fisherpersons.  However there are a few that do connect more often than most.  These fishermen fish different areas of the bay than they do for Chinook.  They fish shallow water, at the edge of the oyster beds during low tide & in water even to 4' deep.   Coho tend to follow the shoreline way more than Chinook.

If you happen to see a school of Coho jumping & moving upstream at a high incoming tide, they will be near shore.   Move away from them, run upstream, wait & cast spoons or spinners in front of the school.  These fish are very spooky, so if you need to move while close to them, use a electric trolling motor instead of an outboard.   If you have to fish these from a moving boat, use a small Fish Flash, a small rudder, no sinker & let your line out 75' to 80' behind the boat & troll near shore in shallow enough water that you get goose bumps.

JUst found Hoquiam RV park, right on the river near the mouth, $20/night.  If you're going to fish the north channel, this is the place to be.  If you're going to fish the mouth of Johns River, then Twin Harbors might be best.  PM me with your phone numbers, please!!

I've got reservations for my small travel trailer at the Westport inn lot.

Question:  since the rules say that we launch and retrieve at Johns River, I'm assuming one would drive your fish to the weigh-in point, because it would be about a 15-20 mile round trip paddle (depending on where you are fishing) to the weigh-in point otherwise?

You need to check in/pay/sign waiver at the Johns River Launch before you fish if you want to go to one of the other launches to fish after that you can.  Check in when you are done at the weigh in station in Westport.

Weak tide exchanges start on Friday through about Tuesday ( good for lower bay fishing).  The net schedule is brutal but they are not going to be in the water till after the derby.

Sign up and talk strategy at the Westport Inn Friday 7pm or I will get to the launch at 5 AM for everyone else to sign up.  Morning check in from 5 AM to 8 AM.

Some last minute items to maybe bring.  It's a herring show but bring some spinners to try.  If you use braid consider using a snubber

SEE YA THERE

   Hey Scott,
Will you or someone else be at the launch til 8 am Saturday ?Need to sign up,pay up ,etc proir to getting on the water.I'll try to get there as early as I can..but just started working a swing shift, off at midnite, don't get home til after 1:00 am.
What the hell-----sleep is over-rated anyway.I'll get plenty when it's permanent.I'll be there early enough.
    Trophy finished--looking good.
I stopped by the 28th St. boat launch today before work and saw about 60 boats fishing at or near the mouth of the Hoquiam River. This was at 3:00 pm.Only one fish ,a 13 lbs King ,had been checked into Horns and Hooks Salmon Derby at that time.Seems kinda slim to me.........
I sure hope we all have better success out at John's River on Saturday...............
   See you all Saturday morning.

Great to see everybody again and fish.  I blanked other than a dofish and a big black after fishing two locations.  Mark and I went back in after the tidal shift and re-launched at the harbor and fished out there for silvers.  I saw more fish caught from the pier than out on the water.  0 fer 2 on Salmon on the PA, but not going to give up.

Sorry I left without saying goodbye...I was starting to feel funky, so decided to pack up and come home.  Hope we can make this a regular tourney!
