Title: New to kayak fishing
Post by: foyboy on October 01, 2018, 06:25:02 PM
Hi I've been in Olympia area for less then two years, bought my first kayak at Costco about a year ago and have only been at few local lakes. Would like to do some bottom fishing in South sound, maybe salmon?
Any local people have any ideas?
Thanks.

Welcome! There are endless freshwater and saltwater opportunities.  You may need a law degree to understand our regulations.  Depending on your comfort level, there is a Salmon Slay Ride Derby/Meet up on Oct 27th at Hoodsport and a Sturgeon Slay Ride event in Portland, OR in December.

Cold weather is on it's way so be sure your dressed properly for safety sake.  A couple of groups on Facebook to check out are Seattle Kayak Anglers, Lower Columbia Anglers and Tri City Kayak Anglers.

Thank you. That's  a whole new topic for me, dressing for icy water. Not prepared to fall in the cold cold saltwater !

Here's an article I wrote a couple of years ago https://kokatat.com/blog/fish-longer-by-staying-warmer

Also, a great video testing different types of outerwear. A dry suit is always the best option as that it will keep you dry and buoyant when used with a PFD.

Mind you, it all depends on how quickly you can get back into the kayak.
