Title: Angler of the Year 2020 (AOTY)
Post by: Captain Redbeard on January 02, 2020, 02:26:36 PM
HOW TO SIGN UP

HOW TO DONATE
We are using the same donation method this year that we used last year:

NO NEW RULES THIS YEAR
Same rules as 2019.

GENERAL INFO
If you are interested in Angler of The Year but aren't sure what it's all about, check out previous years' threads and the AOTY home page:

Bonus big fish karma goes to fearlessguster for being the first competitor to sign up in the new decade!

But the BIG NEWS is that our very own Drifter2007 has stepped up to collect donations for prizes! If you like winning fun stuff for fishing and supporting HOW, give him a shout out or a slap on the back. I'm truly grateful for him stepping up to work on this.

You won't see it until we get the 2020 leaderboard set up, but fearlessguster takes the early lead with a rainbow trout!

Thanks for all your hard work with setting up AOTY this year! My goal for 2020 is to actually post a fish, AND get more points than my five year old. I failed at both of those goals the last couple of years  ;D

My goal for the year is to catch at least 10 species that get points. Also, my ongoing bucket list wish to catch a halibut from a kayak would be cool, like SUPER cool!

I bought my license and signed up today. This will be my 9th attempt. I hope more people sign up. It's a challenge to set goals and then find out it's harder than you thought.

Im in again. I Would also like to finally get a halibut this year, along with some personal goals that I just cant quite seem to pull off. 40" Ling, 40" Chinook, 40" Striper, 20"Bass, and a few others.

I can't believe you haven't caught a 40" ling. You're like the kayak lingcod master. This is your year!

UPDATE: I'm loving all the interest already so sign up and send in your HOW screenshots and let's have an awesome year!

To those of you who participated last year: I won't register you until after January 14 when we officially wrap 2019 because it will mess up last year's results. But your donation date is still your start date, so go ahead and send them in, and fish, and I'll get it squared away after the 14th.

Fish hard!

I'd like to take a moment to shout out to NWKA's bsteves.

The AOTY software is built and maintained by him with 100% donated effort, and he makes improvements every year. It's really selfless of him to share his talents with the community this way and I really appreciate all he does to make sure AOTY goes smoothly.

If any of you Top Guns want something new to shoot for, check out the recently improved AOTY GOAT list, which is the top 10 competitors' top 10 fish across all years:

http://aoty.northwestkayakanglers.com/leader_board/goat

There's some newer faces and some NWKA legends represented there. I'm not going to lie, getting on that list is a motivator for me.

Howdy everyone! 2019 has been archived (thanks to bsteves) and I have processed all of the 2020 signups that I'm aware of.

Please PM me if I missed you somehow.

Next up: getting a 2019 recap post done and shipping 2019 prizes. I'm working on it!

Thanks to Captain Redbeard and Bsteves for organizing and to our sponsors!

I'm really looking forward to participating this year...  I tried to get on the board on Saturday during the break from the rain, but came back with only one good hit and nothing to show for it.  No fish, but I enjoyed the heck out of being on the water again, and reminded myself not to forget my net and waterproof camera next time.

Glad you were able to get out. I'm quite disappointed that for the first year in a few I didn't make it out a single time in January. I guess the upside is I've got 11 months to make up for it.  ;D

First two pix are the mock ups and the other pic will give you an idea of finished product. I think these are way cool. SIGN UP if you want a shot at winning this thing!

Well, I guess my point is that since it's a fundraiser for HOW, it would be nice to have 40 or 50 people signed up like in some years past. You think with 3800 members on this board there would be some more interest. For myself, I'm mostly interested in trying to improve my own score rather than trying to win prizes or bragging rights. I only got out six times last year  and this year isn't looking much better.

I am certainly of the hope that our WA brothers and sisters will be fishing again soon. Since you can enter fish all year it should be possible to still have a good AOTY run, although it obviously does present a handicap on the year. Since we don't collect or manage any money there's not really anything for me to do in the case that WA stays closed, unfortunately. In that (hopefully unlikely) event, I will advocate for those folks to get to compete next year with no donation required.

If Basinyakguy keeps things rolling like he has for the start of this year we might all be SOL regardless of how much we can fish.

I just noticed that there are a few entries for folks that have signed up but aren't showing up on the leaderboard. This happens if you are not marked as having donated this year.

If you have donated and aren't seeing your fish on the leaderboard please reach out to me - I may have missed you. Otherwise, feel free to track your catches but it won't count for points.

Nice fish coming in.  Just a few reminders on the entry photos.

If you're using a board with raised markings please take a black sharpie to the lines and numbers if they are the same color as the board.  Careful, fine lines are better than thick.

Have the fish's tail touching the board so we can get an accurate measurement.  If it's been dead for awhile in an unnatural position, try and uncurl it's tail to flat.

Please make it easy for us.  We want to approve every fish.  Good luck to everyone.

Maybe we can get more participants if we make a shirt or something to fundraise for HOW... I am thinking something like what Jed is doing for the plaque but just the art? I have seen some Japanese style sketches of lingcod and stuff that would be cool too... I dunno just spitballing here.

If half of the entry money went into the prize pool, I think the entry’s would more than double within the next year or two. T shirts are cool too.
I’ll sign up this year eventually, but will not be gunning for the W. Maybe chase a GOAT board upgrade or two

A strong suggestion for everyone.  Please use a measuring device with a vertical stop at the 0" end.  If you use a ruler it's hard to tell the true length of a fish because of camera angle.  If that's all you have, try gluing a scrap of lumber a hair outside the 0" mark on your ruler. Press the fishlips to it when you take a measurement.

A few examples of commercial devices that work well.

I did the homemade, DIY approach. I used a leftover piece of PVC rain gutter and trimmed the sides off except for a bit on one end. Using aluminum pop rivets I attached the gutter end cap and the aluminum 36" yard stick to the pvc for a rustproof measure. And because the potential for a halibut over 36 inches is a real possibility I made a similar measure using a 6 foot (72") aluminum ruler. Both rulers are available at Home Depot.

The rigs don't float so when using the shorter one on the water I attach a piece of pool noodle with a couple big rubber bands just in case.

Nice job.  Homemade can work well.  My first couple of AOTYs I used a homemade board.  Post a photo when you fill the 72" up.

Since buying my YakGear Fish Stik I have never left it home - it's the best one I've ever used. It costs a bit but I absolutely love it.

Same here.  I like how small it folds, sturdy when extended, and it floats (barely). It's also one of the few boards approved by the KBF series if you are considering their events in the future.

I threw in, I think I may be the only Canadian participating this year. Correct me if I'm wrong. So excited to rack up a few species and collect a few points. One question, which species of perch or "surf perch" are acceptable and which aren't?

We're glad to have you participating in AOTY this year.  In the past we've taken surf perch entries know as pink fin, shiner, pile, and striped.  If it's commonly thought of as a surf perch it's probably ok.  What species were you thinking about?

Pile perch, thanks for clarifying!

What kind of buzzbomb is that?!

I thought these were buzz bombs:

Edit:

Ah, buzz bomb is both the lure and the brand and they make other jigs apparently.

So in order to win that sweet prize do you need to use a buzz bomb lure or merely a buzz bomb branded lure like the Zzinger?

Question:

Who do I talk to about getting my fish verified?  I have had 2 entries pending since August 9th, and know that other fish have been added to the leaderboards since then. I'm guessing it's an oversight or someone missed an email, but wanted to check. Thanks!

I'll contact rustyski directly about his pending entries, so this is not specifically directed at him, but more just FYI:

There are several reasons why some entries sit longer than others. In no particular order,

There's not much you can do about the first two: the volunteer judges try hard to keep up and it will get looked at eventually.

However, there is A LOT you can do about the last point. This has been one of the more challenging years for judging fish due mostly to lack of proper measuring devices. We really want to approve all of the fish that we can, and we don't think anyone is trying to be a liar, but if we let it go for one person then it sets a precedent for everyone else.

This is the only fishing competition I have ever been involved with that does not require a measuring device from a specific list. Our rules are pretty open on this because we want to encourage participation and we want people to have fun, and there is a degree of mutual trust because most of us are acquainted with each other. I'd really rather keep using the device I like instead of a particular one off the list, but a list might help alleviate this in the future.

So, the best thing that you can do is: get a good measuring device and take lots of clear photos. I know it's hard at times, especially on the water, but it is possible.

(If your fish does not fit on a measuring device the best thing to do is to put its mouth against a wall with a measuring tape flat on the ground under it. Take lots of photos from multiple angles. Consider the lighting? Will it be easy or hard to see this? etc.)

Update on the Buzz Bomb race: Jed posts a really nice kelp greenling caught on a Buzz Bomb!

Also, I got a 28" lingcod on a Buzz Bomb on Sunday at Pacific City. After playing with these for a few trips my impression is that they are effective if you work them like the instructions on the packages tell you to. That said, it's not yet a "confidence bait" for me. I do like having it in my arsenal.

Great job Jed!!  He increased his lead and set what I believe is the highest score recorded in any AOTY.  With most of two months of fishing left for the year, it may be a mark that is hard to beat.  Keep up the good work.

in my opinion Walleye is the best freshwater fish there is.

for the salt... I like rock fish/ling/cabs over most.

For freshwater I think walleye, crappie, and perch are all similar in taste and texture. Crappie is the closest to me so that's what I eat most. For salt water I like lingcod over everything else. by far.

Hey All,
I need some help with locating people for prize delivery from AOTY.
I haven't done a full breakdown of who gets what yet, and I am waiting a little longer for the possible last minute fish entry.
I know for sure that I need both of the youths that entered, and  there will be some small prizes for at least the top 5 entries in the general class. I also need the winner of each other class, SUP, Fly, etc.
So please PM me with name, address and phone number. For those around Western Oregon, I may try to arrange a meet up to save on postage.

Thanks!

Howdy, sorry, as usual for early January I haven't been on the forum much.

There are no entry fees! #liability - I am still the right person to send your donation receipts to.

Fish hard and keep safe! Looking forward to seeing all the awesome fish this year.
