Nice fish coming in.  Just a few reminders on the entry photos.

If you're using a board with raised markings please take a black sharpie to the lines and numbers if they are the same color as the board.  Careful, fine lines are better than thick.

Have the fish's tail touching the board so we can get an accurate measurement.  If it's been dead for awhile in an unnatural position, try and uncurl it's tail to flat.

Please make it easy for us.  We want to approve every fish.  Good luck to everyone.

Maybe we can get more participants if we make a shirt or something to fundraise for HOW... I am thinking something like what Jed is doing for the plaque but just the art? I have seen some Japanese style sketches of lingcod and stuff that would be cool too... I dunno just spitballing here.

If half of the entry money went into the prize pool, I think the entry’s would more than double within the next year or two. T shirts are cool too.
I’ll sign up this year eventually, but will not be gunning for the W. Maybe chase a GOAT board upgrade or two

A strong suggestion for everyone.  Please use a measuring device with a vertical stop at the 0" end.  If you use a ruler it's hard to tell the true length of a fish because of camera angle.  If that's all you have, try gluing a scrap of lumber a hair outside the 0" mark on your ruler. Press the fishlips to it when you take a measurement.

A few examples of commercial devices that work well.

Thank you, snopro! Those are both good reminders for everyone. As he said, we really want to give you the points you earned, so please make it easy for us!  ;D

Since buying my YakGear Fish Stik I have never left it home - it's the best one I've ever used. It costs a bit but I absolutely love it.

I did the homemade, DIY approach. I used a leftover piece of PVC rain gutter and trimmed the sides off except for a bit on one end. Using aluminum pop rivets I attached the gutter end cap and the aluminum 36" yard stick to the pvc for a rustproof measure. And because the potential for a halibut over 36 inches is a real possibility I made a similar measure using a 6 foot (72") aluminum ruler. Both rulers are available at Home Depot.

The rigs don't float so when using the shorter one on the water I attach a piece of pool noodle with a couple big rubber bands just in case.
The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

Nice job.  Homemade can work well.  My first couple of AOTYs I used a homemade board.  Post a photo when you fill the 72" up.

Same here.  I like how small it folds, sturdy when extended, and it floats (barely). It's also one of the few boards approved by the KBF series if you are considering their events in the future.

I threw in, I think I may be the only Canadian participating this year. Correct me if I'm wrong. So excited to rack up a few species and collect a few points. One question, which species of perch or "surf perch" are acceptable and which aren't?

We're glad to have you participating in AOTY this year.  In the past we've taken surf perch entries know as pink fin, shiner, pile, and striped.  If it's commonly thought of as a surf perch it's probably ok.  What species were you thinking about?

Great job! Those things really catch fish. Zach out fished me just yesterday using one of those damn things.
