Weather willing, SD20R and I are thinking about doing some trolling for trout at Hagg Lake this coming Friday, January 14. Specific launch time and location TBD as we get closer, but we may start near the dam.

If anyone else wants to join, we'd be happy to have you. Otherwise, feel free to share any tips. It hasn't been stocked in a while, but we're planning to target holdovers (aka just get out on the water).  ;)

Tried banking it last weekend near the dam. Lot of fish rising and rolling, way out of reach. We had no action off the bank, but I gotta believe long line trolling a Kastmaster or similar near the surface would see some action.

2 rod endorsement, put one out with a wiggle hoochie and corn, the other with a kastmaster or spoon, see what grabs.

Thanks. I'm looking forward to messing around down there without the constant wake from powerboats. Gets real popular out there when it heats up.

We're looking at a 9:30 AM launch at Boat Ramp A (aka Eagle Point). Should be a nice day on the water. To anyone interested:

If you don't mind a long and steep ramp, consider "Dam overlook" aka boat ramp B up by the dam. It was never open to the public after construction, but it is paved all the way down and puts you right near the dam.

Good to know--I'll have to check that out while I'm there.

Truer words may never have been spoken. I can't think of a lake I despise more for fishing than Hagg lake, it's sad that it's the closest to me as well.

Ha ha. I've got a number of those "white whale" lakes here in AK.  30+ inch arctic char, 10-20# lakers, 5# rainbows there for the pickin's and no combination to the lock....so far.  All within 30 mins or less from home. Maybe my new downrigger will give me a few more options.  But as they say, those monsters didn't get that size by being stupid. Gotta out fox the fox.

Hah. It's also one of my least favorite lakes come summer, but I recently bought a peddle kayak and need to get it figured out a bit more before the spring chinook run.  ;)

Well, it was a long lonely day, but beautiful out on the lake.
I spent the first 45 mins or so trying to get my transducer to work.
Shortly after getting that squared away, I got this 16.25" rainbow on a lil crankbait.
He really slammed it!
That was the extent of the action for the entire day.
I trolled almost the entire shoreline.
Very few other people, and most were on banks, didn't see or hear about anything else caught.
Saw fish breaking the surface throughout the day, hardly anything on the finder.
Pretty sure it was my second day ever at Hagg, the first day I caught a handful of perch, whose combined weight was far less than that of this trout. So, I've yet to slay it there, but also yet to be skunked.
A day without fishing probably wouldn't kill me,
but why risk it?
