Planning on hitting Yaquina Bay this weekend for some crabbing by the NOAA docks. Looking for some intel on doing a bit of bottom fishing while the traps soak. Have only spent a bit of time fishing along the south jetty pretty close to the bridge.

Any tips/input would be much appreciated. Will be fishing the incoming tide through high slack.

I've done alright fishing around the groins coming off the south jetty. Mostly blacks and small/medium lings. Sometimes a big ling shows up, my spearfishing buddies seem to find em out there with regularity. Fishing further west along the jetty doesn't seem to help much--the rocks drop down to sand very quickly, so there isn't much rocky bottom to drift over.

I'm thinking of poking around out there a bit tomorrow, see if I can get a ling. If I go, I'll have my radio on 69.

I've done just like Clayman.
Fish the incoming, sit out just past the end of the groins where it drops.
Small rockfish, some greenling.
Truck is loaded, I'll see you out there tomorrow.

What time are you guys planning on launching?
A day without fishing probably wouldn't kill me,
but why risk it?

I still haven't unpacked or cleaned gear from Green Peter today, but if I can get up early enough and get everything together, I may see ya out there.

Currently mid-30s and frosty here in Newport. I'm gonna let it warm up a bit before I head over to Hatfield, probably launching around 0930 or so.

I had a nice drive to the coast and back.
Had a horrible night sleep, felt like crap, decided to go anyway.
Beautiful sunny day, cold and there's a very brisk east wind.
Looking at the chop and how I felt.
Fighting that wind for 4 hours, nope.
Back to Corvallis and my couch.

Oh no!
Sorry to hear, tho I totally get it.
I was gonna do Green Peter last Mon, forecast the night before said no wind and only 20% chance of rain.
I got up early, loaded up my Outback and was on the road about 40 mins, in a downpour.
Pulled over and checked the forecast for the lake....90% and windy, so I went home and crawled back in bed.
I'm thinking of doing Yaquina Mon, if conditions allow....

You guys didn't miss much. I spent most of the time exploring the north jetty area. Some nice structure about mid-way out along the jetty in 30 FOW. I'm sure that spot has its moments, but yesterday wasn't one of them. I trooched a big herring around the entire time, hoping to find a lingcod. My one and only bite came off the tip of the westernmost groin along the south jetty. 23 inch blue lingcod. I marked a few rockfish, but the boats trying to catch them were having a hard time of it...I only saw two small blacks pulled up out of around a half-dozen boats.

That eastern breeze in the morning was crappy, particularly around the NOAA docks. Combined with the tide and the boat wakes from all the crabbers, it was a little sketch. Conditions were much nicer west of the bridge.

It was nice to explore some new water, but the day reminded me why I don't fish the bay much. It doesn't hold a candle to fishing the open ocean.

Thanks for the report sir!
I agree, bays don't compare to the ocean, but the ocean isn't letting us out!
Think I may chase steelhead tomorrow instead...

Most of the good reports that I have read about Yaquina Bay jetty have been people who fished at night or predawn.  But that's just what I have read.
"A venturesome minority will always be eager to get off on their own,
and no obstacle should be placed in their path;
let them take risk, for God sake, let them get lost, sun burnt, stranded, drowned,
eaten by bears, buried alive under avalanches -
that is the right and privilege of any free American."

I had a pretty decent day there last year.
Not many crab, but a decent mixed rockfish bite.
I didn't expect there to be lings about, just had my lil lake rod, which is fun for blacks n such.
Something, probably a ling, freaking frieght trained me, at one point and busted me off.
