Pepper and I are going to be on the Outback roaming lower CoosBay this week, starting Tuesday with Wed and Thur planned also.

Wind looks light and these are my favorite tides for fishing the submerged jetty.

Planning to crab and hunt for big winter lingcod (to get humiliated by).

if this sounds familiar, see Clayman's report from the Yaquina, lower Coos Bay was nada, no rockfish, no baitfish, I worked my ass off to get 9 winter crabs, and no lingcod, just a couple of promising bites. It's hard to be disappointed with 9 crab but dang, any sort of keeper ling would have made my day.

it was calm...

and Pepper had her game face on, laying diagonal across the rear deck because she's a boss. lol

some just legal, also a couple the commercial guys missed.

I made it out one Half Moon Bay Saturday for my first ever crabbing trip on my new boat and also worked my tail off for 9 keepers. The wind made it interesting, but what an experience.

Good on you, winter crabs are always a treat! I use the same or very similar cooler (down to the same color, see attached) while crabbing since it fits perfectly in the well of my NuCanoe 12 I crab from. Out of curiosity, what is the square plate screwed into the size of your cooler? I highlighted it with a red oval. Some kind of removable plate to use if as a live well? Thanks!

that goes back to my time as a Materials Scientist in the semiconductor industry, we were playing around with using 12v Peltier devices as part of CPU cooling, I brought home some extras to play around with making my own electric coolers, this would have been late-90's. There used to be a heat sink on that aluminum block to gather up heat inside the cooler so it could be dumped on the outside.

I'm not familiar with the bouy layout, but I did not leave Half Moon Bay. Pretty much straight out from the small jetty about two thirds across. Soaked two pots twice. Both times, one pot had none, second pot had many. Lots of big females.

Ah, that explains it! Not all of our gear tweaking and DIY directly relates to fishing, but some of it eventually comes back to fishing!

isn't that the truth, I use that old cooler to carry my bait on the way, then I bring the crabs home in it about half full of sea water with a 12V bubbler in there to keep them happy and feisty. when it's warmer, I toss in a frozen water bottle to keep them cool.

another thing I like to do, when I get to my launch point, I load them all into my box trap, zip tie all the doors closed, and leave them in the water while I take my time getting all loaded up, moving them to the cooler last. makes them real snappy back home when I start whacking them for their sauna appointment.
