Title: AOTY 2023
Post by: Casey on January 09, 2024, 07:36:19 PM
Hello all! Nothing is technically official yet but have you noticed the impressive catches and stiff competition in AOTY in 2023!? Congratulations to all that participated and contributed to the competition this last year! A big congratulations to Nobaddays for an impressive 204.72 average! If you have ever fished with this guy, you know he fishes really hard and is one of the most kind, informative fisherman on the water. It’s not a surprise to see that he did so well. This competition is the coolest competition because even though it is a competition, it’s actually just like minded people helping each other and learning. Thank you to all that keep this thing a float

Congrats to the competitors.  Scoring above 2000 requires a ton of commitment and travel.  Still hoping to compete one of these years.

I gave it my best go in Nov/Dec and Nobaddays slapped me with a 36" Lake Trout.  He was awesome this year with big and quality fish.

I might have some little fish ready to get 2024 started though.

Congratulations to all the competitors this year! James......Just WOW!!

The scores will become official here in a couple days and we will post the results.

In reviewing my year and scores I think we should make a category for fish between 150 and 175 points. I am really good at that size of fish. Just kidding. Well, sort of....

Congratulations, all! I kind of flamed out by the end of summer as usual but it's always fun to watch the competition go on until the bitter end.

It doesn't look like any last minute updates.  Congratulations to Nobaddays, kemfish and SD2OR for going 1,2,3.  Thanks everyone who supported HOW by participating.

Thanks Spot!
It was definitely fun.
Kemfish is getting to be a regular Clayman. So many days, I was fishing right next to him, same lure, same technique, and he almost always showed me up.

NoBadDays is just freaking next level.

I probably won't be competing this year. Was spending too much on gas, and the wife would be happier if I were around more.

My goals for this year, are to finally get a sizeable striper, get my first ever laker (something like 8 or 10 trips to Crescent/Odell this year, and not one fish), and to get towed by some dinos.

I'll be in Alaska when BCS takes place, but hope to make it to SBAOTD and ORC, at least.

Wishing everyone tight lines in 2024!

Congrats to all participants and to James for a great year. You guys got some monster fish last year and can't wait to see what 2024 brings. Hoping to fish with some AOTY anglers this year.

Thanks everyone for the support and kind words.

I can’t lie, 2023 was a really good year for me.  Comparing it to the previous year, in 2022, I had one PB all year and it wasn’t even good enough to make my top ten.  I basically just got a lot of nice average fish all year.  In 2023, I had ten PB fish, of which nine made my top ten.

I am very thankful to all my friends that I have fished with on this forum.  It helps even more when my closer circle of friends are also some of the top fisherman in AOTY.  I have learned so much fishing around them.

Kemfish and SD2OR, you guys put an incredible amount of time on the water and bring in so many great fish.  I knew that once I got rolling, I better not let up or you would shoot right past me.  If I counted correct, Kemfish submitted 58 fish in 2023.  Pretty amazing.

Looking forward to seeing what 2024 brings.  Hope to see you on the water.

Congrats all!

For some reason I am getting a 404 error when trying to access AOTY. Anyone else having this issue?

Yes! I am having the same issue. has been ongoing for a while. I used to be able to get into AOTY by using Edge. Now that is not working either.
Making it very difficult to perform my duties as coordinator.

For the longest time, I couldn't access NWKA or AOTY on my phone, only on my laptop. All of the sudden, I can access NWKA on my phone, but not AOTY, and can't get either on my laptop now.

I got duckduckgo, as suggested by Merz, and now I can access AOTY.  Before I could not get it with Chrome or Edge.

I don't know why it's working differently for different people.

I can tell you that it is working fine for me on Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, both on Windows 10. AFAIK I don't have any weird settings or anything.

I'll ping the site admin again. I'm sorry I can't help directly.

Regarding AOTY 2023:

As others have mentioned, big congrats to Nobaddays on a well-earned first place finish! When he got that monster bull trout early last year I had a feeling he was going to get on a roll. That said, he really worked for a lot of those points and put in the time.

It was great getting to know SD2OR and kemfish, too - more great competitors and man they grind for points! I also really appreciate talking with Jim who helped me on my quest to be a better walleye angler. Of course, there are a ton of others here I should recognize too, like merz, Casey, and Jed, all of whom have really helped me improve.

And, of course, it was fun fishing with everyone at the Brownlee and Sunset Bay tourneys, and the fall walleye social.

As for my year, I'm really happy with where I landed. I was able to spend more time fishing in 2023 than previous years due to life's circumstances, and I'm really glad I took advantage of it, because it's looking doubtful I'll be able to fish as much this year. 1820 is my best finish ever, and I doubt I'll top it any time soon.

So many good fishing memories from the year. I wouldn't have believed it if you'd told me I'd register 3 different types of salmon in one year, or that I'd score over 1800 without a single 200+ point fish. My lingcod was my most prized fish of the year, but my pink salmon and rainbow trout were also special to me. I was also psyched to get a late-season 18" smallmouth in cold water.

Like I said, I may not be able to fish as much this year, but I'm still going to give it a go and see what magic happens on the water. Looking forward to seeing y'all out there!

AOTY is working for me in Chrome now, for the first time in about 6 months. Hopefully it's fixed for everyone.

Good job everyone in 2023!  Some really amazing fish caught. My goal was to get 10 species on the fly rod. I only got 9, but crappie and bluegill count as the same for aoty, so I'm going to call it a success anyway. I'll probably go with the same plan next year. If anyone is looking for a new challenge, I definitely recommend picking up fly fishing.

I am very grateful to whomever fixed the AOTY page! Thank you!

Now I would like to apologize for being late on getting prizes shipped out. I did get them all lined out last night. January was a rough month for me. The last 1 1/2 years I have been working from home and my best friend (Dog) Charley would lay by feet or on the love seat beside my desk and supervise my work. It was so wonderful to work next to her day in and day out. During the course of 2023 she went down hill pretty fast. She also started losing a battle with cancerous tumors. I knew it was going to be rough on me, but honestly I had no idea how bad it would be to say good bye to her.

Anyway... Now lets get to fishing! Gets signed up for AOTY! LETS GO!!

Sorry about your loss Drifter.  I know the feeling.  Aug of 23 was when we had to make the decision.  Making me sad right now thinking about it.  She was a great dog.

Thanks for sending out the prizes.  I know everyone appreciates your effort in everything prize related.

I'm off to make a HOW donation and get myself entered for 2024.  Beware, tiny fish competitors! I'm tying up some #24 flies and dusting off the Zero weight. ;D

If anyone from previous years has moved, I need an updated address to ship your prizes. The only person I don't have anything on is Billfishing. So, Billfishing, if you read this please pm me your name and address.

Thank you!

I recently received my prize bundle for AOTY.  I got some great gear.  I am anxious for the weather to break so I can get some of the gear wet.  No doubt it will help me get some more big fish this year.  Thanks to all the generous donors and thanks to Drifter2007 for coordinating and delivering the package.

A quick update on prizes:

Drifter was able to give some of you your prizes directly. For those still waiting, it's my fault. I have been working out shipping with our previous sponsor who has graciously offered to help out again.

The stuff should go out mid-next week.

Thanks for your patience!
