Title: Reversing Scotty 1050 brake lever?
Post by: Seattleite on February 25, 2023, 06:42:29 PM
Has anyone here successfully reversed the brake lever on a Scotty downrigger? If so, where and how did you cut? I'd like to switch it to the left side so that my downrigger can be on the left side of my kayak. Thanks

It looks like someone was able to do it based on this video:

I use 1050s on the right and left side of my 2022 Outback. I just adjusted the brake so it grabs sooner and is tight at the 3-4 o'clock position instead of 12 o'clock and I pull it towards me to drop the ball. In this position I don't have to reach over the top of it or anything where the reel handle thing would get in the way. Not sure what you are fishing from or if having that lever pointed out at an angle all the time would be in your way but it works great for me! I think I recall taking it apart and being pretty sure there wasn't a way to flip it unless you like 3D printed the equivalent part mirrored.

Yeah it's starting to look like I'll have to adjust it like you described unless I want to take a risk with reversing it.

I was hoping to angle my downrigger boom very close to the kayak, instead of perpendicular, to minimize how much it drifts when the downrigger is deployed. Doing that was going to require that I reverse the lever so that it was pointed away from me, but it's looking like I'll probably just install it perpendicular instead

I shortened the boom significantly on my downrigger, was very helpful for a number of reasons. Might help with yours...

I already shortened the boom to about 13" from the original 23", looking to keep the brake lever out of my way now as I installed the downrigger mount just to the left of my left thigh
