Hello Mojo.
My family will be camping in the area and I would like to get my first taste of salt. Do you mind showing a rookie the ropes? I have been mainly working the lakes and rivers for bass/trout. Have not upgraded my license or gear for salmon yet. Picked up some waders a couple of months ago from Cabelas that I have yet to use. I have been lurking the forum for Ocean fishing a while and trying to build my gear towards that.   I am thinking of trying to sneak away for until about 10am and see what I can learn!

It's up to Mojo on what he wants to do, but waders are not very safe as immersion gear in the ocean.  Just sayin'.

Thanks for the input Tinker. I definitely do not want to put myself in any possible situations regarding any gear/etc. Although I seemed to have read and reread the debate on safety immersion gear and what people have used. A few said they've used the wader\wading belt\dry top combo. I have also seen a youtube video of a guy testing a couple of combinations. I do not want to start another debate here since there are already many discussions on the topic.
My hope as well posting on here was to get someone to say something is not a good idea. I had already been debating my waders since they are the 5mm and just having them on makes me a bit uncomfortable for this time of year. Been looking around for a 3.5mm or maybe something else that's not an arm an leg.
Either way I was planning on checking out Lake Lytle in the hopes of slaying some bass on Saturday at some point. Trying for surf perch as a first too.

Add a drytop to the waders and you will be all set and ready to go.

Open ocean I always use a wetsuit, many on here use a drysuit, waders and a drytop in my opinion are fine IF the waders are thick tight fitted neoprene not the loose breathable kind. Hot days in the bay I wear dry fit layers not my wetsuit, I always have a charged vhf and NEVER go alone.

I asked for advice on where to get a wetsuit for a grandkid who'll be out in the ocean maybe once a year in summertime (and never more than thirty feet away from me) and several folks suggested the bargain basement, pre-owned, open-box, and clearance sales of surfing shops.  Worth a look if any are close to you.  the thread is at http://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=20659.msg218093#msg218093.  If you can't see The Shorebreak yet, I'll PM the recommendations I received to you.

I wasn't crapping on your day, just saying you should understand the risk involved.

Are the waters normally calm.  It's supposed to be a little windy

We launch in the morning by the time the wind kicks up we’ll be headed in if we’re not on land already.

I might meet up.  Jonesing for Pacific city,  but it's looking sloppy.

The more the merrier, I have one extra crab trap if someone wants to borrow one.

Sounds like a successful day!  I got back from several days rafting/fishing on Deschutes and was too tired to then head to Tillamook. Wish I would have now.

Caught a pike minnow on a tiny fly!!

Sounds like it was a great trip.  Is this a regular trip to the bay?  If so and if you don't mind another newbie tagging along, new to salt on a kayak but have everything needed.  Know the area well.
