Time to get serious! I'll be running the planning for the Taco Feed again this year after my unfortunate hiatus last year. As always, I might be organizing, but it is YOU that makes the taco feed happen by signing up to bring all the stuff that's needed.
I'd like to get a listing of folks that will help with the various aspects of the taco feed. Below is a rough list of the things that need to be done on the day of the ORC. Sound off if you want to take one or more of the jobs. Only stipulation is the fish cutters not be asked by ANYONE to help with cooking or cleanup. As mentioned by someone else, after a couple hours of drunken knife wielding it's a bad idea to have them near open flames and hot oil.
Frying fish and tater tots/French fries (sumpNZ, Deluxeharley)
Filleting fish and cutting to taco size pieces (need probably 6 folks)
Running food from fryer to serving trays (2 people)
Set Up (4+ people)
Clean Up (as many as we can get)
Prep cook for fish frying
Tortilla cooking (Insayn +MurseStrong)
Beer service to cooks and fish cutters
Etc.
Here's my list of what all we need. I will update the list over time as people sign up for items and/or suggest additional needs.
Probably the #1 most critical item to secure is deep fryers. 2013 and before DeaFish was able to provide a nice set, but 2014 that went away. 2014 as I recall we used a series of turkey fryers. We'll do that again if necessary, but if anyone has access to a good dedicated deep fryer that can take 2-3 large baskets simultaneously, ideally run on propane, PLEASE speak up.

Added a section to the OP for jobs during the taco feed that need to be done.
-
If I have the room in my packing I will supply my UFO (discada) and LP tank to run it.
I'll get it setup, and take it back down when done. I will also run the first shift and train anyone else that wants to fly the UFO. It's actually pretty fun.

I love that you signed me up for my food already!

This is pretty cool...never been to ORC, but been here long enough to know how excited everyone has gotten in the past. And it's back. Sounds like a great time!
-
You can count my burner, turkey cooker and propane in again this year along with bottled water. I also have a huge pot for boiling crab, clams or anything else if there is a need for it.
I can speak up for some other items as we get closer.
-
Taco shell fryer molds (x4)
250+ct Paper Plates
Plastic cutlery
Some Ice on site
David Mason!- I challenge thee! Thy delectable concoction of bi-valve potage herewith brings shortage amongst the masses. I too shall dare craft a cauldron for twofold!
-
Awesome - glad you're on this again Andrew!
I will have my turkey fryer, burner, and propane. I able to help with setup/frying duties and/or runner.
I will also plan to bring a case of soda, a fruit bowl side dish, and a jug of salsa. Will plan to check the list for missing items as ORC approaches...
Thanks,
Sam
-
I will be bringing my pop up trailer to chinook bend. I have a large outdoor double burner that is fueled by propane I can bring. I my be able to borrow my father in laws deep fryer. It has two baskets. I have a large pot used for crab we could use as well.
I will volunteer to bring more food as the time comes up
-
Just as a reminder- a quote from last years thread.
One thing was brougbt to my attention- we need Firewood of anybody has any!
Just a suggestion for next year if NA will be orchestrating the ORC again, would be to set a little of the entry fee cash aside to line up some local firewood to be delivered to the campground for our use. I have no idea what this would cost, but I have seen over the years many folks do this at various campgrounds when they are having family reunions. Someone just shows up with a small dump truck, or 1 ton truck and "poof" there's now a 1/2 to 1 cord of wood for the week.
Just a thought. 8)
Love the suggestion, we will ensure that this is on the list for 2016!
-
Great idea on the firewood fund pool. I can pitch in because unfortunately we will not be able bring a trailer load this year like we have in the past.

Josh, say it isn't so. That means you arent going to be able make a fire that will keep us dry 30 feet away?

I can check around here for prices unless someone has a closer "wood chuck" still not sure I'm making it but definitely want to.

Sorry man, we just do not have the wood inventory this year.

Put me down for Tortilla flippin with Insayn & i will supply the Louisiana Lemon Fish Fry (gluten free). If you have an idea of how much Fish Fry we will need that will be helpful.

I don't usually cook with that, so I don't recall exactly how much we need. Trying to remember but I think around 4 of the 10oz packages should be plenty. Anyone else got a better estimate?
You can get a 6-pack on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Louisiana-Fish-Fry-Orleans-6x10Oz/dp/B0035LVLMM) for $16.73 with Prime shipping. If it was me, I'd probably buy the 6-pack and take back home anything that was unopened afterwards. Assuming you'd normally cook with it at home that is.
-
Not too many gluten free. We always use up the pride of the west. Maybe if all of the gluten free people would speak up we can get a accurate count
-
Mmmmm! Pride of the West properly liquefied with Ninkasi. :headbang:
-
??? Looks like Ninkasi's sponsorship policy has changed. I'm going down to there & find out what's going on.
-
Okay... Ninkasi can donate 15 cases, & no one will be allowed to haul off cases from the commons w/o proper clearance on Friday or Saturday :police: >:( Any perpetrators of such dastardly deeds will be subjected to immediate public ridicule, shaming & embarrassment with subsequent disgrace, dishonor & humiliation.
-
The Ninkasi single serve stash is safe from me.
I much prefer the keg version, over the bottled/canned version. :-\

15 cases is not bad, but a far cry from the 2 kegs we got before. Sounds like we need to look into additional beer sponsorship.
I seem to recall hearing that things didn't go so well with Rogue at the first or second ORC. Is that accurate? Granted, even if it is that was quite a while ago and they might do better now.
If I wasn't coming from quite so far away (and in a Camry rather than a truck/SUV) I'd look into some local breweries as there are so many up this way. But there's also a ton around PDX.
So, who's up for looking for an additional beer sponsor?
-
There are 165 twelve oz servings in a full keg, or 6.8 cases.
In other words, 15 cases is the same as the same as 2.2 kegs.
Also, I feel if Ninkasi is willing to pony up that much beer for us, we shouldn't be looking for other beer sponsors.
If we need more beer, people should either BYOB or we can start a beer fund to get a keg.
-
I thought that was equivalent to about 1 keg. If it's a little more than 2 kegs worth then yeah, it's cool and additional beer should be unnecessary.

correct on the math (of course) & +1 on the rest.
-
Of course Brian is correct on the math. I agree, we can start a beer fund or byoa. Everyone knows I bring a half gallon of Jameson to wash down my spicy ribs.

I only drink Protestant whiskey...not that you were offering. ;) Hah! Actually, I have a co-worker that won't drink Bushmill's because it is Protestant. Guess what brand I buy. ;)
Also, I will help cut fish again as long as the beer is flowing. I can bring a fryer if needed again.

GF here... but I'm not asking for anything out of the ordinary.
-
It's easy enough to sprinkle some various Mrs Dash on naked fish and deep fry to perfectness for the GF folks.
-
I will definitely be able to bring a double propane burner for people to use. I have been deep frying food on my father in laws fryer for the last few days (fresh clams, fish and chicken). Anyways, the fryer is set up for two baskets and is electric. I can only do a few pieces of fish at a time in each basket (so total I can do 4-6 portions the size of your pal. I will bring it just in case we are really low but it may be much easier to use the propane heaters and grab a few large pots and get them going.

Alrighty. Been purposely holding off on bumping this thread until my MBA was all done, and with graduation yesterday, and the hangover gone, it's time to get this rolling again.
I'll go through the thread in the next day or so and make sure the list up to is up to date. But definitely I need people to start claiming items.
Also, sound off if you want to volunteer to help with set up, or clean up. I'll make a list of volunteers on the OP. I need at least 4 helpers on set up and 10 on cleanup. More is merrier of course.
-
Put me down for 7 heads of lettuce a 2 more taco shell molds. I will be hitting cash and carry on my way out, as we get closer I can probably get some additional last minute items that are needed.

My wife and I can help with cleanup.

Count me in for cups, paper towels and napkins.
I'll likely whip up some jambalaya for a side too.
-
Along with flying the UFO, I'll provide the 4 boxes of Pride of the West. :icon_thumright:
-
Awesome fellas! I'll update the OP tonight.
-
Yeah I'm in for a side dish in addition to what I'm bringing from the list. I don't know what; open to suggestions that travel well. ;D
-
Count me in for cups, paper towels and napkins.
I'll likely whip up some jambalaya for a side too.
You in for the full amount of cups, paper towels and napkins, or just a portion?
-
OK, I think I've got all the updates on the OP. Would everyone that's sounded off to bring something/help out please check the list up top and make sure you agree with what I have you down for.
Also, to the organizing committee for the ORC: I seem to recall seeing that the tournament would provide for some items like firewood and possibly other stuff too. Can you please clarify, for the purposes of the taco feed, what (if anything) will be provided by the tournament, and if I should purchase said items and be reimbursed or if one of the organizing committee will do that.
-
I updated mine and added the burner. I didn't realize I had the power to modify these posts. Don'y worry, I won't let myself loose control of my new found power. Also, $150 for me? Well thanks SamH. Remember if it is on the internet it is true. ;D
-

I'll grab enough of all of them. Costco here I come!

Since I'm on the hook for plates and plasticware. Do you think 250 each will be enough? What's a good number ya think?
-
Put me down for three cases of bottled water.

Limit is 120 competitors. So long as these don't get used for the HOW spaghetti dinner on that Friday we should be good with that many.
-
So, we're getting closer to the tournament so I'm bumping this thread to get some additional folks to step up and commit to bringing some of the important items for the taco feed.
-
I'll bring shredded cheese. Any idea how much is enough?

I will bring Salsas, probably a few different varieties in large quantity.
Also I do have a HD Projector (will need to make sure it's all good, haven't used it in a year or so.)

Figure on about 3 tacos per person, up to 120 people, so 350-400 tacos. I'd guess probably around 6lbs of shredded cheese. Maybe a bit more. I'm assuming 1/4 ounce per taco. That may be off.
What we can do is just open one bag of cheese at a time, and then if there are leftovers you would certainly be welcome to take them back home.
-

er... that's 120 registered participants in the competition. Our family and guests aren't going to eat?

So far there's 40 registered. I doubt we'll get to 120 participants. Even if we do not everyone will stick around for the tacos, and of those that do, there is a lot of other food (usually) and so not everyone will want tacos.
I didn't count 2 years ago, but when we had 112 competitors, I don't think we went through 400 tacos.

Good to know, thanks

I'll be heading to Oregon from Montana on July 1, and will be on the road, fishing here and there and everywhere, between then and ORC. So it'll be hard for me to tote along any equipment, and hard for me to supply any food or supplies which I can't buy in Depoe Bay. So I'll volunteer for setup, and whatever other chores are needed.

Right on! I'll add you to the list.
Look forward to your tips/tricks for mackinaw fishing. I have an intention of fishing Lake Chelan the weekend of July 23.

I know there's only 50 people paid up so far, but more folks need to step up on helping with taco feed. I think 20 people roughly have signed up to help out on the taco feed so far. We're getting close to the line and there still a ton that needs to be claimed.
-
Not signed up yet, but put me down for misc. dessert. We will help with setup and cleanup as much as possible.-jed

Got it. Thanks!!!

If I can swing it this year I'll bring a few batches of TLW's cookies, and help with either setup or cleanup. Just not sure if it's in my cards yet.

I will be happy to help cutting fish again and anything else you need done.

When do you think you'll be able to commit? Just let me know when you're sure about coming to ORC and I'll add you to the list. If you do come and want to help with either setup or cleanup, but not both, I'll put you on cleanup if that's OK. I need more hands for that and fewer folks have signed up for that yet.
-
You can sign me up for the cleanup crew. I'll bring a side dish and sour cream.
-
Myself and Seahorse haven't "officially" signed up yet either. But we will be there. Andrew , put me down for the name tags and set-up and clean-up. I may be somewhat limited -- but I'll do what I can to help. I'm pretty sure we'll throw a side dish together too. Maybe a potato salad or some other starchy type thing. See ya'll in couple of weeks.
Andrew--- don't be getting all nervous. This will come together.
-
I will bring cups and spoons for the chowder. Also some oyster crackers.
-
Andrew I helped with the cooking of the fish last year. Would you like my help again this year. Let me know. Dale
-
Please change my assignment from setup to fish processing. It's probably the only way I'll get my hands on any fish during ORC. I'll have knives and a board.
-
I can do prep. I'll bring my own bowls, knives and board. I'll clean up after myself.
-
Don't sell yourself short Pete. My first ORC, which was also my first time fishing the ocean from a kayak (I'd hit the Sound with no success once or twice before hand), I came in 5th with an 11lb 7oz ling cod. That is the larger of the two fish in my avatar.
That said, I'll put you on the fillet crew.
-
Roy and I will bring brownies and cookies.
-
We'll need some large coolers & lots of ice for the beer. I've got one large cooler we can use. Who can help me tote those 15 cases up to Chinook Bend from Eugene? Any volunteers?
-

I'm bringing 3 gallons of fryer oil and 12lbs of fries.

I'll bring a couple cases of soda.
-
I'll bring 5 Gallons of cooking oil for the fryers, Sylvia's fruit salad and salsa.
Dana
-
Lancer Jigs can bring a bag of cilantro and shredded cabbage from Cash & Carry and a case of pop. We also have alot of metal tongs if still needed.

I bought the two 2.5 pound bags of shredded Tillamook medium cheddar from Costco for our last HOW event and forgot it in my fridge the morning of the event. I can bring it for the taco feed.
-
I've been away from the computer all weekend. I'll update the OP with everyone's contributions shortly.
Lancer Jigs - Absolutely we will need tongs. Thanks!! And welcome to NWKA!
-
I'll bring 100 of the flour tortillas.
I'll also volunteer for the cleanup crew.
-
I grabbed a 5 gallon jug of oil for frying. Valvoline ok? I will update it on the list.

Man, 5 Guy's just stacks that shit up next to the front door to show off.
-
I just made a new batch of kimchi and will bring a few jars of it for the adventurous. Personally, I like it on fish tacos.
-
Little Cos and I will bring a big batch of super awesome slaw that will go great with the fish tacos. What else is in demand at this point that we can help with?
-
Updated the list.
I think we're getting pretty close with food items, but I need more folks to volunteer to help with prepping the food (e.g. fillet crew, as well as getting the fish coated for frying, plus general setup), probably need at least one more cook, more cleanup crew, and a couple people to help with running food from fryers to serving area.
-
Andrew did you account for tables? We may need a few in the cook area to support the stacks of tortillas, raw and cooked fish, cooks beer, etc...
I would bring a few, but my truck and trailer are already overflowing.

I'll help, if it means I can finagle a few gluten-free fish bits from the fry-masters ;D Seriously, though, I'll be there to help with whatever. I suck at filleting, though... it looks like some kind of horror movie when I do it. Happy to help prep stuff, coat fish, whatever.
I'm also planning on bringing my pop-up shade d/t the forecast so wherever that is most useful I can set it up.
-
I signed up for some tortilla flippin but I am free to help elsewhere too. I'm a work horse in the kitchen when the beer is a flowin!
-
Andrew - looks like I'm out for ORC, caught a nasty virus and been sick all week. Doc says it's going to keep me down the rest of the week. With that said, looking at the list, it appears there are enough friers without mine.
Oh, and Craig will have to come up with his own $150! 😀

Damn Sam. Was hoping to hang with you again this year. Get some good rest and we'll see you next year. The weather forecast is deteriorating so if that continues we might be doing something else for the tacos than fish. Hope not, but 15-20kt and gusts to 25kt is easily beyond my personal limits. Praying it calms down and isn't like that on Saturday after all.

Thanks - definitely a bummer... You'll have to get the story of the rag tag group that pulled off the fish fry last year from somebody else.
Good luck, hope the weather forecast improves; that sounds worse than last year.

I've finally made it official and paid my entry fee. Didn't look interesting enough till I saw the forecast... :-X ...
Is the list on the 1st post up to date? If not, tell me what's still needed and I'll make sure to bring it along.

A couple folks have dropped out. We're now down by 2 fryers, lettuce, taco shell molds, and 2 canisters of propane.
If anyone has space and can replace the propane and fryers/burners PLEASE do so. I'm in a small car, and will bring whatever I can find quickly but likely won't have space to do so.
-
I'm bringing a propane tank. I'll see what I can do about getting a burner, too.
-
I'll bring 2 five gal. propane cans.
-
I can bring my jet boiler (hooks up to 5gal propane tank) if someone else has a suitable pot to put on it. Just let me know.
It's like this: https://amzn.com/B000291GBQ

we will be bringing a couple of upside down cakes for dessert too.
-
You guys rock! I've got propane, but couldn't locate my burner in time.
Looks like we still need another burner and a couple pots.
-
Oh, and for that that are worried about what we'll do for the tacos if we can't fish, fear not. We will have fish, one way or another thanks to some generous offers.
-
I will bring a burner and a pot, too.
-
I just want to make sure that too many people aren't bringing a ton of frozen fish down. So who do we have commitments from for frozen fish? I know I was going to bring a few packages, Steve said he has a bunch, who else?
-
I was talking to Andrew via PM: I have quite a bit I can offer, someone just let me know how much to bring by 11am Friday and I'll bring it. I'll have time to prep it ahead of time if I'm not fishing, too, so it should be ready to go in the batter/breading.
-
I can bring about 5 or so pounds. I have not fished much this year.
-
I can bring a propane burner. I'll also be bringing about 5-10 pounds of fish.
-
I've got 4 gallons of salsa I'm bringing... I also have a huge bag of red onions and a big box of tomatoes, any need for those?
-
Hey guys, my names Casey. I'll be headed over for the taco feed and raffle this afternoon. Please let me know if I can bring anything, sodas, beer, a side dish... Let me know, I'm happy to contribute!

Doubt you'll hear much from the event, very little service there. It's a potluck, so would be good to take something....

I won't be there but with this group beer is always an option.
