Title: i11s crabbing
Post by: rogerdodger on July 06, 2017, 07:23:42 PM
why?  well, why not?  actually, 3 of the locations that I fish often (and carry my boat and gear down to beach launch) have good to excellent crabbing much of the year, being able to drop a pot and get it after fishing could add a couple crabs to what I take home.

I use 32" ProMar collapsing pots (with 2# of lead added to the bottom), the mesh lets most of the 5" and under crabs drop out on the way up.

I decided the i11s deserved some 'armor' and this thin $20 cargo mat worked perfect:

cut it to fit over the forward anchor points and mirage well, it protects the left side fully...

no issues rolling a loaded pot on from a kneeling position

I didn't use much bait and was just expecting small crab up here but I got one rock hard keeper when I pulled the pot:

and in a great example of 'reverse long-arming', I picked up a nice black while I was letting the pot soak...

so a successful upgrade to the capabilities of my i11s and a tasty dinner bonus from my test outing...cheers, roger

Looks like a good time, I was catching Dungeness a couple weeks ago while I was Salmon Fishing the Siletz Bay Spit, got my limit of keepers. Wife doesn't mind me fishing so much if I give her a big bag a fresh crab for her to share with her friends. The whole day passed before I knew it, what a great lifestyle!

welcome to the forum...if you are interested in making the drive down here to Siltcoos to cast and troll spinners for coho, keep you eyes open for my posts and PM me...I'm pretty comfortable sharing what I know about that fishery with other NWKA kayak folks...second half of October is usually when I get into the most coho...cheers, roger

Nice work!  And clever add-on for crabbing, too.
