My first white king and largest from the kayak. It's length was 38" and it was a fatty. I'd say 25 lbs maybe more. Got it on a green kone zone flasher, green pro E troll herring helmet and a green label herring. I had a heck of a time landing it. Too long of a rod and leaders! I think I had it to the kayak 5 times before it finally jumped into my net!

I cooked it along with a regular king, same marinade. I actually think I like the orange kind better. But they were both delicious. I think me and my wife ate 3 lbs of it tonight !

White King is delicious. Non-white King is delicious. In fact, the only King (or salmon, generally) I've found to be non-delicious is "lack of king." Great job!

Nice! A bunch moved thru Seattle area back in 2005/2006, haven't seen them since. Great eating fish (no matter what the Canadians say  ;))

"The rich, red meat of a wild Alaska king salmon is a vivid sight. Translucent and buttery, the deep red color comes from pigments in crustaceans in the salmons’ diet. Some king salmon – about one in 20 – have white meat due to an inability to process these pigments in their food.  ..."

What are these crustaceans and can I use them for bait?  Shrimp?

"... The ability to process carotenoids is simply an inherited trait. Research has shown that when two white kings are mated they produce white king offspring, and red kings when mated, produce red kings; ... "

Whoever wrote that section didn't understand dominant/recessive genes.  Two physically red Kings can produce white offspring.

The fish has two complete sets of chromosomes.  Offspring inherit one set from the female and one set from the male.  The vast majority of the genes on the chromosomes are identical.  A red King has either one dominant red gene and one recessive white gene, OR, it has two dominant red genes.  They are either RR or RW.  Any white King has two white recessive genes.  They are WW.

Mating two random white Kings will always produce white King offspring.  WW+WW = WW, WW, WW, WW physically they are all white.

Mating any two red Kings will NOT always produce red King offspring, because there are two kinds of physically red Kings, and three mating combinations.

RR+RR = RR, RR, RR, RR - all red.
RR+RW = RR, RW, RR, RW - all red.
RW+RW = RR, RW, WR, WW - three red, one white.

Mating random red and whites yields:

RR+WW = RW, RW, RW, RW physically they are all red.
RW+WW = RW, RW, WW, WW physically half are red and half are white.

Why does my head hurt after reading that ?

Too many years since biology class.............
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent
