Title: Here's the new hauler
Post by: Fishboy on August 11, 2012, 07:24:17 AM
After looking at various bed and roof rack scenarios, I realized I would be spending close to what I would pay for a Harbor Freight trailer, so I bought the heavyweight on sale for $349.
The two Raptors fit great, and I also have the chassis for building a teardrop this winter that will handle the Raptors on top:

Nice! Those Raptors just look cool. Are the yaks just sitting on the plywood or do you have some kind of rack system they sit on?

Younggun, I bolted down a sheet of 3/4-inch plywood. With their triangular shapes, the two Raptors fit perfectly between the wheel wells.

Looks cool. I've been toying with the idea of a yak trailer to tow behind my Jeep Wrangler since it's a little high to lift a yak up on to. It has a 4" lift and 33" tires. I'm 6' 3" and it's just a little taller than I would like. The HF trailer looks like a great base to start from for a simple trailer. This winter we will see what happens. Can't wait to see the tear drop you come up with.

That's a great idea. Your right about the cost of other options.  The base rack system for my car starts at $300.

You could sit the yaks on some foam blocks or our favorite, the pool noodle, to help absorb some of the shock during transport (if you find that its an issue).

I would also be curious to see pics of the teardrop when its completed.

How long are your yaks?  Always assumed the HF trailer would be too short for a larger kayak and need an extended tongue but now you've got me thinking

Dood, the Raptors are 13'6" long and fit fine.

I found some pretty good ideas here. Some of them are built on the HF trailers.

Good to know, may pick one up to try w/ our 15 footers.  I mean it's only an extra 1.5 feet...

I got the 4x8 folding HF trailer with 15" wheels on sale for $239 last year  It works for my 18.5' Tandem Island despite about 7' overhang. I put an 18" extension on the hitch. I hope to do some mods to weld on a 4' tongue extension and a removable mezzanine to carry 4-8 more yaks for HOW events.
