We get them from ebay.  Someone also said you can get them through Remote Control car sites too.

Hobby Partz has the RC version too. Cheap, made in China, but they seem to hold up pretty well. They also sell chargers, safety bags for charging, and various other things. I've ordered a few things from them and they have arrived quickly and undamaged.

They are NOT necessary, but they will help contain the mess IF the battery explodes. Li-ion can be temper-mental batteries IF you don't handle them correctly. My buddies don't use them and they have never had a problem. It's just an additional safety device. I don't mean to scare anybody about batteries exploding. It can happen, but it doesn't happen that often.

Just to put anyone at ease about these batteries. They are the same thing that is in your laptop and  cellphone.

The reason for the "explosion" warning is that in the RC community, people push these batteries to their extremes and accidents happen more often. I  have seen these do their thing and can attest to the validity of the warning.

However I also keep my cellphone in my front pocket 3 inches away from my most valued body part. So, as long as you are careful and follow all the precautions, you should be fine. (Make sure your storage box doesn't fill up with water and don't charge with a cutoff lamp cord, etc...)

I second the HobbyPartz recommendation. They have the best prices *stateside* that I've found.
My wife thinks fishing is merely guys wandering around like idiots swinging sticks in the air. Many of my trips prove how smart she really is.

Thanks Skidplate, I would agree that the r/c community is pretty rough and abuses their equiptment pretty badly.
