Title: The Cheapskate Kayak Fisherman - Deals Thread
Post by: Matt M on December 07, 2017, 09:24:02 AM
It came up on another thread several weeks ago, many of us have found kayaking or fishing related deals in the past, but had nowhere to post them or share them. This thread should be a good composite deals thread for killer pricing on things, or even on useful repurposing of existing items for kayaking purposes.

I'll start us off with a deal I found on another forum. This definitely doesn't qualify for "Cheapskate" status, but it's a darn good deal on a Reel I haven't seen go on sale often, and certainly not 50% off.

https://www.westmarine.com/buy/daiwa--saltiga-2-speed-lever-drag-conventional-reels--P012002531?recordNum=3

Use code: WMAFF for another $15 off $200

They also have some other reels 50% off.

https://www.westmarine.com/outlet/buy/daiwa--team-daiwa-luna-reels--P014366504?recordNum=4

Edit: Looks like most of the deals are sold out!!!

They were 50% off, they've removed those models after they sold out.

Field Supply has a 50% off deal on Under Armour fishing stuff. I personally own their "Chesapeake" Pants and shorts, and several shirts as well generally good quality. YMMV on sizing available and pricing, but there's some pretty decent deals to be had.

If anyone sees a killer clearance price on Lowrance HOOK 5's, post it here.  I've been looking for a great deal now that they're about to be discontinued, but haven't seen one yet.

I have a raincheck for an okuma coldwater low profile line counter reel for 69.99 from bimart.  Don't think I'm going to use it - there are still 4 in stock in Corvallis FWIW.  If anyone is interested send me a PM.

What's a good price for the Hook 5?  I saw Cabela's has them on clearance for $250.

Thanks, Cosmo.  Pre-Christmas pricing at a few sites was $199 with a coastal map card - and I should have bit the bullet then.  Hoping to find one for $220 or less (less, please).

The combined price for a transducer and power cable is $159 with the price going up-and-down by $10 every other day.  New HOOK2 finders use different transducers and power cables, so I have to get off the pot soon.

Actually the hook2 can use your existing transducers, you just need an adapter cable.  They do use different power cable though.

Bimart has hook4's for 199.  Thinking of picking one up.  That's a good price on that raincheck, bb.  I got one for Christmas but it was close to a hundred bucks I think.  Need to get a rod for it.

Yes it is.  I have the spinning version of that rod and it's my favorite non-fly rod.

How is the action/bend on that Daiwa rod?  I need something softer for trolling/mooching purposes.

I bought the 9' heavy DXS casting rod and it feels pretty stiff to me (not what I'm used to). I haven't used it yet but it doesn't feel like the kind of rod that you "load-up" (kinetic energy?) the rod when casting. I need to pick up a reel for it. I'm hoping to buy a lightly used LH 300 Lexa (HSP) for sale locally. It'll be my first baitcasting setup. I'm thinking of putting some 40# braid on it for kings (both from the yak and bank fishing). For the price, I was willing to take the risk of it not being "perfect".

Thanks for the review - I had a feeling it didn't have the parabolic bend I am looking for.

Thanks for the review - I had a feeling it didn't have the parabolic bend I am looking for.

I've had several versions/actions of the DXS rods, from light through x-heavy and all are "extra-fast" rods, stiff through the bottom 2/3rds with light, flexible tips - which is my favorite action with conventional rods.  IMHO, they're too stiff for general trolling.

Fisherman's is running the Okuma Coldwater's (round) for $70. Not quite as good as last year when they were $60, but a good deal nevertheless for someone looking to get into an affordable line counter reel. I've caught everything from Chinook to lings and 5'+ sturgeon on the same reel without any issue.

Found a cheap safety flag at Big 5 Sporting Goods yesterday:

PROPEL PADDLE GEAR Safety Flag (on clearance for $14.98)
https://www.big5sportinggoods.com/store/details/PROPEL%20PADDLE%20GEAR+Safety-Flag/3330129960021/_/A-5521141#.Wru3NGbMx24

I bought one of these and it looks reasonable.  It looks like they don't tighten the screw enough on the bracket holding on the lower pole so it tends to want to fall out of the package so make sure all the parts are there.  Once I tightened the bolt it grips it fine.

They also had paddle/rod leashes on clearance for under $6:
https://www.big5sportinggoods.com/store/details/PROPEL%20PADDLE%20GEAR+Bungee-Kayak-Paddle-Leash/3330129960010/_/A-5521034#.Wru3j2bMx24

And a 3 pack of 8" rod floats (mini pool noodles) for under $8:
https://www.big5sportinggoods.com/store/details/propel%20paddle%20gear-rod-floats/3330129960015/_/A-5521083?_D%3Asearch=+&_D%3AsiteScope=+&_DARGS=%2Fstore%2Fcartridges%2FSearchBox%2FSearchBox.jsp&_dyncharset=UTF-8&siteScope=ok#.Wru3umbMx24

You can check stock online for the stores near you.  The one closest to me said limited stock and to call.  I just showed up and they had two left of the flags and the noodles.

I just grabbed another X11 there fro $64.  They have an 8 footer that is 1-6 oz that would be an awesome jigging rod.  Nice and light. If someone wants a nice two piece lightweight rod for that, I would pick one up next time they are on sale.  It is cheaper than the ugly stik tiger jigging rod (when on sale) and way lighter and more sensitive.

I haven't used one of these YakGear Lumina lights yet, so I can't speak to the quality. I have seen a few of them around various campsites, and I know the owner of the company was pretty stoked about them when they came out years ago.

For under $15 I'm willing to roll the dice so I ordered one.

https://www.westmarine.com/buy/yakgear--lumina-led-rechargeable-utility-light--15218951? (https://www.westmarine.com/buy/yakgear--lumina-led-rechargeable-utility-light--15218951?)

They also have some tackle storage pretty cheap. The corrosion inhibitor seems kind of gimmicky, but for transport and storage it's better than a bucket. I doubt if they are well built enough for lasting use on the water. The hinge looks somewhat flimsy.

Just got this deal from Next Adventure on a Kayak Rigging Kit.  These nylon pad eyes are great for securing gear on your boat, and the hooks and bungie kit are great too. Normally $15, on sale for $4.  I picked up two kits.

Checked out the prime deals and came across this.

https://www.amazon.com/Abu-Garcia-REVO4-X-W-Profile/dp/B074TZMH92/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1531851228&sr=8-6&keywords=abu%2Bgarcia%2Bbaitcasting%2Breels&th=1 (https://www.amazon.com/Abu-Garcia-REVO4-X-W-Profile/dp/B074TZMH92/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1531851228&sr=8-6&keywords=abu%2Bgarcia%2Bbaitcasting%2Breels&th=1)

If you are looking for a baitcaster the Revo X is a bargain at full price.  At this price and with the 20% prime discount it is one of the best reel deals I've seen this year (if you reel with your right hand).

I love mine.  So does Tackletour http://www.tackletour.com/reviewaburevo4X.html (http://www.tackletour.com/reviewaburevo4X.html)

it was up for$72, then the 20% off earlier.  They ran out and it went up to $82.  Really kicking myself for not ordering it sooner (was going to wait to get home to get a number off a gift card), jumped on it now though so still not bad. Can always use that gift card on something else.

Do you want to lift huge fish off the bottom with a fly rod?  I was looking for something that wouldn't break and had a lot of lifting power.  I was considering an ugly stik but when I stumbled across the bluewater series from TFO at 62% off I knew I had found the answer to my search.  I bought the "baby" rod for lings, cabbies, lakers and power chum fishing.  Who's going to step up and buy the Medium? :o

Everything you need for fall salmon! I love Fisherman's.  Why anyone goes to Cabela's and pays 20%+ on the same items is beyond me.  Although, Cabela's does have good fudge.  http://www.fishermans-marine.com/media/wysiwyg/2018_august_super_sale_final.pdf (http://www.fishermans-marine.com/media/wysiwyg/2018_august_super_sale_final.pdf)

That Daiwa Lexa low profile linecounter is worth its weight in gold for salmon trolling.  The Okuma coldwater low profile line counter wasn't bad, but the face (plastic) broke after a little more than a season due to big Chinook cranking it back against the rod holder while trolling.  Maybe it was incompatible with the Scotty Orca.  ::)

Fisherman's is a better deal for you Oregon guys once you factor in shipping since they don't seem to offer free shipping deals.  That said I did just pick up an Okuma Cold Water 203 for the lowest price I've see anywhere by $20 ($79.99).  The shipping made it less sweet but still cheaper once you factor in WA tax.

If you need kayak odds and ends or like to build your own (ie. have a need for resin and fiberglass), this site is awesome. http://www.duckworksbbs.com/category-s/334.htm  Shipping is quick and reasonable.
If you are sick of those piece of shit poorly designed Hobie handles that fall apart after a minimal use (1.5-2 years), get these: Plastic Handle Piece Only at $0.86 ea http://www.duckworksbbs.com/product-p/k736400-parent.htm compared to $16.09 for a Hobie handle (https://www.austinkayak.com/products/495/Hobie-Kayak-Toggle-Handle.html)
Carbon fiber handle for $9.95 (http://www.duckworksbbs.com/product-p/lo-cfg.htm) vs Hobie cheap ass plastic for $16.09
(https://www.austinkayak.com/products/1247/Hobie-Paddle-T-Handle.html)

Spectra line for when your Hobie rudder cables fail. They will, unless you are prostaff that get a new boat every two years. 2.2 mil http://www.duckworksbbs.com/product-p/cwc-spec-lb-parent.htm  Admittedly, you are only saving $.04 per foot on this one, but I like to have it available for trips and emergencies.  Every Hobie I have owned has had to have these lines changed.

There is one hidden gem on the aforementioned site that will save you a TON of money if you like rigging for accessories.  It is an Easter egg for you to find. ;)  I have posted about it before and now have verified - for myself (and others who have seen my new Revo) - how awesome and functional it is.

In the vein of sharing the Hobie rudder cables, I nearly became sick at the thought of paying $.30 a ft for what amounted to glorified braided line (I realize it's heavy duty stuff.) All things considered it's pretty cheap considering one only likely needs ~30ft or so to re-rig an entire boat, but as you say the lines have a way of wearing out on older boats.  I didn't imagine something turning or holding down a rudder REALLY needed to be 450 or 600lb breaking strength, so I went to amazon and found Dacron kite line with 300lb strength in a 500ft roll, sure it cost me more than one replacement of the rudder lines, but I am confident over time I will need more of it, my wife has found several uses for it around the house as well. If anyone needs any just let me know, I can mail you 30-50ft or whatever for the cost of a few stamps.

Dacron works well too.  I was placing an order for something else and as long as there were shipping costs already, I wanted to try this stuff and I wanted some bright colored stuff for another project.
In 12 years, I’ve never had a Hobie handle break.  I’ve had the line break, but not the handle itself.

Dave
Count your blessings. I have owned 7 different Hobie's (3 Outbacks, 2 Revos, an Adventure, and an I12) and the handles have either fallen apart, or started to fall apart on all 4 of my previously owned models.  The inflatable is still good, but sees little use and may have different handles. The other two (2018 Revo and 2018 Outback) are brand new, so the handles are still intact.

Maybe it is from pulling a heavy boat up the long steep ramp at George Rogers Park after many failed attempts at catching a Springer there.  Too much pressure on the handle.   ::)

+1 I think I'm on 4+ years on my 40s. I've had them apart twice to clean/lube. I can take them down to components now pretty quickly. They are finally getting a little looser than I'd like, but they've still got a lot of life in them.

Here's a pretty good deal on a righty (wrongy) hand bait caster. Know very little of the quality of said reel aside from the specs look pretty good and Pflueger generally speaking makes decent stuff.

I would imagine so... Likely should've been 129.99 or something along that sort.

They map ship it. I bought a couple Pflueger spinning reels from Cabelas for ridiculously low prices like that when they got discontinued. I bought in person at the Tulalip store, but only because I saw the deal online and drove there with the web page showing on my phone. I didn't have to show it to them, though, as they had the same price on the tag in the store. One of those reels put fish in my kayak today. Hope you get yours, even if the handle is on the wrong side.  ;D

I think it just goes to shipped status by default after a period of time, although I could be wrong. I had the same thing happen with a kayak I ordered through them and they cancelled it a few days later.

Mine went from shipped to "in process" still no email from them. I must say Bass pro needs to take over the e-commerce platform from Cabela's. I have ordered many things from Bass pro without issues and it seems everything from Cabela's has some sort of problem.

Cabelas' order tracking is pretty behind the curve.

I chatted with a CSR this morning, told him I made the order, it was canceled due to a pricing error and asked him if he could do anything to honor the price.  He looked it up and said no way they would be able to sell a 200 reel for 30 and that it wasn't even orderable in their system.

Outdoor Emporium has a couple of 2018 Hobie kayaks at great prices. I just picked up a PA 14 and couldn’t believe the deal I got.

They have one more 2018 camo PA 14 for $2,849. Also saw a 2018 Compass in Seagrass marked down to $1,299 due to a small blemish on the bottom of the hull. The manager at the store said it still comes with the factory warranty. They also had a blue Compass for $1,499.

They had 22 in stock. ;D
I have other burners.
This is a comparison between the $15.00 WalMart and a King Cooker I got at The ARC.
No BTU info available so this isn't too scientific.
They use the same gas regulator, but the burners are significantly cheaper in the WM device.
Heat output was higher and the water boiled faster with WM burner, so it appears to be worth the 15 bucks.

Very tempting as I have been rocking a cheapy fred meyer paddle since my hobie paddle broke many moons ago. Does your still show the 10% off? When I click it does not... That could push me over the edge.

Will echo the praise for the Trevala, it hurt the pocket a bit when I typically try to spend <$75 on rods, but it's been super versatile and made ocean fishing infinitely better and more comfortable.

On the deal front it's been slow for whatever reason. I am still looking for great deals, but alas they've been few and far in between.

Agree on the Trevala!

Also, Fisherman's still has some great deals until the end of the month like 40% off of bulk line installed and 10% off your entire purchase.

Yeah Fishermans has had some unadvertised deals that are pretty good.  Crab pots were on their typical $14 sale, but not in any of the ads.  They had Trevalas on sale too I believe.

That is definitely a good deal, I think deptrai here had one and ran into several issues with it.  Not a bad deal if you're willing to risk it for the features. It's definitely a nice unit IF it works... Perhaps the newer batches have fixed some of the problems he had.

I do remember reading on here some issues people were having.  Curious if they were battery issues or trying to put too large of load on it?  Reading the description it sounds like 7" FF pull too much juice for this particular battery.

Seems like the nocqua are a bit more popular than the WS battery, but could be good for someone trying to lighten up.

http://www.quantumfishing.com/  has 50% off sitewide with code 20CLASSIC50. I personally don't own any quantum gear as of now but they make some pretty decent products that may be worth it with the discount.

Also they own Fin-Nor which I don't know much about (must be an east coast thing) and there's some lever drags that are a good price (can't speak to quality.) They're unfortunately all Right hand only so no love for us leftys. The discount seems to work there too.

20 years ago, the Quantum Energy line was one of the best reels around. They kind of went downhill after that, but I haven't used anything recently. With that discount it might be worth checking them out again.

I think the Hook2 series is getting phased out for the Hook2 Reveal line, so my guess is pretty limited inventory.   Seems like Westmarine closes out fishfinders at pretty good discounts if you can catch them before they sell out.  I have bought both of mine on closeout at much reduced prices.

I have had trouble with my hook2 losing bottom when I go from quick transitions in depth. That I am having trouble with the unit is apparently not too surprising.  I only got it since it was cheap and I already had an extra lowrance transducer so I could easily move the unit between boats.   I probably would not recommend it if starting from scratch

I bought the hook2 7 with ocean maps (exact same model) in June last year when it was on sale....Also 299 PLUS it came with a free $100 visa card. So effectively $199 and a better deal than the current offer. Worked fine in general initially but also had some glitches (like losing bottom, similar to what Shin09 describes, and also the screen display suddenly changing into a very dark color for no apparent reason - so dark that you could not see anything anymore).
That was last year.
Now the unit doesn't even power on anymore! Is still under warranty and I will need to ship it back. All in all surely no great experience and I also don't recommend this unit.

In addition (and in hindsight): I found 7 inch is pretty big for a kayak. If i have to buy something new in future I will go for a smaller model.

I bought the OnX maps subscription last year. If you think you'll want to use it in another state, you can call them up and they will enable it for those states without making you pay for access across the entire country. I believe there's still a charge for that but it's an option that isn't (or wasn't when I did it) shown on their website.

That's a great deal, and very tempting although I'd have to hack my way to build a cart for it. I have an existing hobie wheeleez cart with one bad wheel that needs replacement, sadly I don't think these wheels will work with that one.

Those wheels are a great find. I hacked together a cart in about an hour or two last year, but I have a cheap welder in my garage.  I can recommend never using 3/4 gas pipe for the axle.  It ends up being about 7/8" gas pipe when the rust expands. ;) But I needed that cart that day and it was what I had on hand.  It worked great all last summer and fall but I left it out in the rain all winter.  EMT conduit works great. The parts made of it didn't rust and it is cheap.  Right now I am building a powered one that will have a blue tooth speed controller for helping me get through the sugar sand in some tough to reach beaches that do not exist as far as I can say.

I havent fished with the koke one but the Elite line has an UL with like 2-6lb rating or something like that.   Seems to be a decent feel in the store.  For what its worth, I use a Lami red and the eagle claw yellow.  The Uglystik seems lighter in action than both of them.   I would consider getting one if I needed another koke rod.

Shimano Stradic Ci4+ - 15% off and an extra 10% off your first purchase if you sign up for their email flyer.  I just got a 2500 and it arrived within 1 week with free shipping - $175 total for a reel that has an MSRP of $225.  Not too shabby.  Presently they have 1000, 2500, and 3000 models in stock.

https://www.americanlegacyfishing.com/2016-shimano-stradic-ci4-spinning-reels.html

This shop is out of Indiana and it appears that they are well reviewed and have a solid online market base.  I am very happy with my purchase from Legacy American Fishing, especially given my recent experience with our local Sportsman's Warehouse stores (never shopping at that chain again).

I'll just add that I've purchased several reels from this outfit and have been more than happy with them and their customer service. I had purchased a left hand Shimano Casitas baitcaster and unfortunately they sent me a right hand model, upon letting them know they sent me next day air the lefty along with a shipping label to send back the other one. To me getting everything perfect is not a reality these days, it's how you respond to issues that earn my business. I still prefer to support local businesses when possible but finding left hand reels can be challenging sometimes.

Yeah the 400 doesn’t come down that low from what I have seen.  Curious if it is being discontinued or maybe just updated?  I would be curious how it would handle a tuna.  The ifish crowd doesn’t seem to think you should have a level wind but that’s usually in the context of a big round reel. I feel the narrow and low profile reels are a bit different. Plus a lot harder to get your hand caught.

It’s not ideal but I know a 300 series has handled a tuna

Nice tuna!

It's very easy to remove the line guide from any of the levelwind baitcaster style reels for use with larger explosive gamefish like tuna.  Very easy to train a thumb as long as you have one.

It's gone as of today... at least the guy who I asked looked at me like I was crazy when I asked about it. I didn't see it regardless.

Fish-Field has various Uglystik Tigers (casting, spinning, jig, elites) on sale for $50, normally $80.  Pay special attention to the model numbers though I THINK some are the older stock with the old guides which have stainless frames + a guide insert.  New guides are 1 piece stainless.   Old rods I think had Fuji branded reel seats where the new ones are generic.

If you in Vancouver BC, Helly Hansenn Aegir Oean Racing drysuit 50% off at Queensborough Landing Mall in New Westminster. Regular price $2000 CAD and it is $1000 in that store. Sweat deal, but only L size. Saw it on the weekend. Too bad nothing in M size.

Mountain Dew is doing the "Outdoor Stimulus" again this year. I thought nothing would come of it last year but I got the free $20 (I believe it was $20.)  It's easy to sign up and simply scan or screenshot your fishing license.

Edit: It looks like it's a Chance to win $25 this time. Probably not worth it to sign up... Leaving the post though just in case...

Anyone looking for a bigger cooler for larger fish that does not weigh too much Costco has the Igloo Maxcold 165 qt on sale for 79.99.  I good deal I think and a big upgrade from my old igloo 120.  The big igloo is nice to throw whole fish and crabs in before processing.  Diagonally inside it’s about 38”.

It’s supposed to be a great coho year but I’m planning on bonking many chinook as well!

West Marine will have this radio for $99, I believe this is the same unit I use and have liked it. If you're in the market for a VHF it's a good low/no frills unit that should hold up pretty well: https://www.westmarine.com/buy/standard-horizon--hx300-compact-floating-handheld-vhf-radio-with-usb-charger--13130844

Fish Field has a deal on their "Mini Crab Pot/Trap" for $54.99. I don't own any of these but am thinking about getting one, just about the perfect size for a kayak and better built than the Danielson's style traps.  Dimensions are 20" x 8 1/4", 8.5lbs. Down side is that it only has one entry door for the crab.

They ended up putting the harrier rods on sale for 75 and harrier x rods on sale for 104.  decent prices if you looking for a saltwater jig rod.

Not seeing a whole lot else that is compelling, especially compared to years past.  Supply crunch probably alot to do with it.

bimart offering 30% off Okuma rods and reels, but guessing that is limited to what is in stock which could be minimal

The Bass Tank (legit vendor I've ordered from before.) has a 9 inch Garmin with Side scan transducer for $699, which is cheaper than I've ever seen for this combo, a few other outlets had it for $799, but I believe it was with the cheaper not side scan transducer. The only gotcha I see here is the touch screen, I am not sure how well that works on the kayak with sea spray, rain, wet hands, etc... I know the lowrance units of yesteryear were not desirable for that reason, but not sure if newer tech has made it better.

You're probably good for the better part of a day on the SLA but I would probably upgrade anyways, they're so cheap nowadays it's worth it to have the peace of mind if you forget to charge after a trip you will be good to on the next. I went with this guy which was the best deal I could find in a lithium battery. The only downside is the form factor is a bit weirdly shaped for the typical boxes. I bought a plastic "ammo can" type case at harbor freight for $10 and it works just great.

I'm with you and I actually watched that video and have been a subscriber to his stuff for years since I have been looking into a solar/off grid setup for the shed at the edge of my property. You have to watch a number of his videos to get a feel for what he is saying when he typically is testing massive battery banks, solar, and things intended for off grid use in a larger capacity than a ~1amp fish finder. Most of the reviews of a similar battery have similar results but I did contact the manufacturer and they indicated they've corrected most of the issues that were stated, which IMHO is fine for my usage. I paid $59 for it on special, which is roughly half that of anything else I could find in that size and more than 4 times cheaper than a similar size in a "name brand." I figured if I am getting ~85% of the stated capacity then that is good enough for me. So far so good in my usage, but definitely YMMV.

Sportsman's wholesale has a BOGO deal on FIN-NOR reels, I am guessing they have a glut of inventory to offload. Either way figured I would post since it seems like a pretty good deal if you're looking for one. I personally haven't used one but I know they're pretty popular (or used to be) with the tuna guys down in southern California.

Going to put it on the Old Town. One of the specs was a smaller transducer than some of the bananas that come with other units with side-scan. I think I saw a vid on YouTube about the long Lowrance transducer being mounted on the AP.

Local Cabela's didn't have one in stock, so I am guessing it is a week or two out.  If it looks like the transducer is a no go, can probably sell it for what Cabela's is charging or more.

Yeah it's not the biggest thing ever but also quite a bit larger than the non side-scan varieties. I am not sure if the transducer attachment section is the same in the AP 120 as it is for the sportsman 120 but it doesn't look like it will fit well with the stock mounting plate. I need to spend some more time with it to see if it will mount up with some modification or if I'll need to try and fab up something different. I do have a 3d printer now so might have to print something to accomplish it.

A nice deal on good units there. Have been running the 73sv and am really pleased with the performance on it relative to the cost. Can definitely recommend in my limited experience thus far.

I've been running the 73sv for a year now and very happy with it (I got it for $450 on sale at Cabellas)  The only thing I am salivating over right now is the "relief shading" feature but I would have to shell out another $250 to get premium version of coastal maps which has that feature. This is of course a want; not a need so probably not going to happen.

I just received my plano boxes.  I knew they were the weather sealed variety, but when I ordered I didn't notice they were the deep 3700s.  I guess I saw the price and thought they were the normal 3600s.  Score!  Should have bought more.

If you're in the market for a Hobie Trax scupper cart.

https://www.the-house.com/ss005508zz-hobie-kayak-accessories

I know it says "wheels not included" but someone else I know ordered this (he didnt see that the wheels were not included) and it came with the wheels and they are the bigger wheels.  I was tempted so I ordered one also.  It's supposed to be here Tues, I will keep you all informed.  If it comes with the wheels too then this is a killer deal.  About $150 with the additional 16% off that they are offering right now and free shipping too  :banjo:

This listing definitely comes with wheels...mine arrived today. Based on the original price (MSRP) on the website, I think that they just have the wrong photo shown with the listing. Thank you thank you thank you for sharing this deal. $152 out the door with free shipping is a phenomenal deal, likely unbeatable or very hard to beat, for hobie equipment which is seldom on sale.

This supplier may use multiple "fulfillment partners" and each of them does something different ... regarding wheels.
My bare Hobie frame came from Bakersfield, CA.  The House Outdoor has just one store in St Paul Minnesota.

I'm happy this has worked out for some.
I suspect Steve catches more fish than me too.

I am imagining that the warehouse in Bakersfield employs two people who have been packing our boxes (mine came from Bakersfield as well) - one staff is packing boxes with wheels, and one is packing boxes without. Roll the dice and you might get lucky. Very odd that the House doesn't really know what they're selling or packing. Could be worth two rolls of the dice as hdpwipmonkey suggested :)

I'd check the amperage draw on that.  If you go with a screen that large it's likely drawing a lot of amps which might mean you need a bigger battery to run it (unless you only go out for a couple hours).

oh my what a bunch of fuddy duddys!! But in all seriousness it is a bit overkill. I think my 7" Garmin is just fine and plenty big even with split screen. I do think it's a good deal if you're looking for a larger screen though. Looks like about a 1amp/hr draw so yeah it's definitely up there but with lithium as cheap as it is now you can take care of that reasonably inexpensively. Agreed that Lowrance has been marginal with the value prop lately.

I have the sand wheels, they do work.
I did a completely unscientific test at the little cove next to where the NOAA ships dock.
From the soft sand at the top to the mud at low tide it was much easier with the sand wheels.
They're better on hard surface than balloon tires.
C-Tugs are not perfect, the kickstand is a joke, the entire thing is plastic and subject to UV degradation.
The pads don't fit any of my kayaks, that can be overcome.
Then put a pair of them together with the connector kit and it's great.
Sure beats the half dozen, half assed PVC pipe contraptions I've created over the years.

Limited deals available this year, but I did manage to find one worth sharing...40% back as a gift card when you buy any St. Croix rod from American Legacy Fishing. I've ordered from them before and I've been very happy with the deals and service. More of a bass-focused inventory though, as a disclaimer for use of the gift card for PNW folks.

I've had a St. Croix triumph M 6'6" for about 15 years now and it's been very good to me. I've only had to replace the top eye. It's been around the world with me and caught many fish in both fresh and salt water. I'm going to upgrade one of my other spinning rods to the St. Croix Avid this year. I spoke with customer service and the deal is good for backorders as well. This model would be about 2 months out on backorder.

Finally broke down and looked at it one day while bored.
They actually have some great prices on decent looking gear.
I can't attest to the quality yet, as I just received it, but they have just about any kind of gear you are looking for, got two new spinning reels for $35 total. They look nice, spin smoothly...

Good deal on a 1800 watt portable power station.  I have two of their other products and have never had an issue with them.  My others are only 600 and 700 watt.  I am thinking of getting this one so I can run a small coffee pot and various other electronics.  The sale price is only good for 2 days.  I also have a $20 off code from their Facebook group. It's Amazon Prime day which should mean some decent deals on fishing and non fishing items alike.

One item that I am picking up some more of are these knockoff Plano "Edge" boxes. I have had too many issues over the years with the cheapy terminal tackle boxes, either allowing in water or having the latches break or bust off. It could just be me being hard on them but they generally only last a few seasons before needing replacement. These boxes seal well and the latch is rock solid in my experience.

Thanks for posting. Did the canon ball sinkers look as nice as on the pictures?

By chance I stocked up at FishField yesterday, who at $0.25/oz for most weights is significantly cheaper than other stores in the area. However, $0.14/oz is a lot better and I will try this person next time, also because he has the very hard to find 14 oz canon balls. When trolling the Columba 12 oz often is a little too light and 16 a little too heavy.

If ever in a Fisherman's marine.  Make sure to ask if any good items have been blue tagged recently.  They blue tag items for extreme discounts when they dont sell or have extra stock.  I asked and they alerted me to the 3door octagon danielson crab traps- normally 120  on sale for 30.  I picked up the inventory at the store and called around the other locations with no luck.  These are the same that i picked up: https://www.amazon.com/Danielson-Octagon-3-Door-Ramp-Crab/dp/B003CU77EW .  Keep a lookout for them and ask about the blue tag discounts.

I like the cheap ones mostly because if someone swipes my gear I am only out $40-50 altogether rather than $150+ for nicer stuff. A similarly discounted $50 500ft roll of 5/16'' sinking  line will last me quite a while, the buoys oddly enough are the most expensive component aside from the pot itself. I will say that the "Kayak Crabber" Mckay pot I won from ORC 4 or 5 years ago out "fishes" the cheapies for me for whatever reason, although it's smaller so not quite as much room for crab, if I am going to leave the pots for more than an hour or two I go with the bigger Danielsons.

That is a good price.  They work on Outbacks even better:

Nice install and do suggest installing the sailing rudder.
My first down rigger was on a 2010 Outback and the hand operated Scotty using just a 2.5# ball caused the kayak to severely crab until I swapped the rudder.
In 2012 I bought a new 2013 PA-14 and installed a Canon 12 volt mini-Mag down rigger and again needed to swap the rudder for the sailing version. Reducing the boom length helped too and I was able to point the boom forward so I could read the counter. I assume the newer PA's with the additional drop down skeg helps to prevent crabbing with heavier weights.
This is a link to a old post I made with the Canon down rigger.

Next adventure (I think the downtown paddlesports and scappoose) are running 50% off rods. Its all Daiwa stuff and there are some gems left (at least as of Thursday at the PS center) including: FT Boat rods for 10 dollars.  At least one Harrier jigging stick for 50. Some high end spinning rods for trout and bass.

Dollar to yen is at $150.54 this morning, the highest in 30+ years.  If you want to take advantage of it with some new JDM gear, this is a great site https://www.digitaka.com/ (https://www.digitaka.com/)

Most reels ship for free.

West marine is doing its yearly clearance sale, there's some pretty decent deals on some stuff. Unfortunately I don't have the time to dig through it all but if you're looking for something specific then they may have a deal for you.

Thank you Matt!
This was a very useful post!

I had been checking their clearance section on the website and was still going back and forth whether I should buy some more Shimano Tekota reels (I have one and LOVE it). The price was good. Good that I waited though as they just added another 25% off clearance. The price is now the lowest i have ever seen anywhere on Tekotas. Time to retire my Okuma Coldwaters!

With the additional 25% off they now have a lot of rods and reels for REALLY good prices. Especially if you are in need for short rods for ocean fishing, there is plenty to choose from.

Spending a little more time looking at this here's a few things I like or could recommend along with the deel on the Tekota's Stinger referenced.

Garmin Inreach mini - This is a tool I've had for 3 or 4 years now I believe? It's great when in areas with no cell coverage. I've only needed it to communicate with family and friends but it's been invaluable in that capacity. See previous posts by Rogerdodger on some possible shortcomings of it, but for the purposes of basic communication it's fantastic. https://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=23939.msg242948#msg242948
Garmin now has the inreach mini 2 which is updated, but also $400

The Shimano Curado K reels are among my favorites for casting reels. They're well made at a reasonablish price. I've found them at similar sale prices before, but this is a solid price for these:

For spinning reels I really have liked the Daiwa Fuego line of stuff, nice drag numbers for the size and weight. I've found this line to be a good mix of price and quality. This is a solid to good price for these guys. Can definitely recommend.
