I use dry silicone spray(huh, dry spray, don't ask me??) on the workings of the rudder and the good ole stand by wd-40 or similar on the drive, you don't need to soak the thing just a couple quick sprays oin the chain will do the trick

Is this the right and only way... no, just the way i want to do it.

I do put a little heavy grease on the copper swagey thing, keeps it from turning green and corroded looking . I don't knowwhy they did it that way the other side has a ss nut.

Light beer washes off too easily and isn't effective.  Stout is too thick and sand sticks to it.   I prefer a nice IPA.

I think this calls for a talcum powder test! 

- We need 3 volunteers to each drink one of those beers and then pee on the wall. 
- We'll have Yesno sprinkle talcum powder on each of the 3 specimens.
- Zee can then hose them down and we'll see if your assumptions are correct.
