Title: Portland Crew Roll Call
Post by: bsteves on July 17, 2008, 07:45:02 PM
Just curious how many members we have from the greater Portland Area.  So if you live say, 45 min from Portland, then let us know here on this thread and I'll add you to the list in this first post as we go along.  What I really should do is install a mod on this forum that would let us put a push pin on a google map for each members location.

I'll only add your real name if you give it here (even if I know it).

Thanks,
Brian

Wow, where up to 10 and I know there are some more out there that haven't spoken up.  Seems like if you want to go kayak fishing around Portland these days that there's a good chance you might actually find some to go with (always a good idea for safety).   This is so much different from when I joined NWKA a little over a year ago.  Just to let you know how exciting this is, maybe FishesFromTupperware would like to tell us what it was like for him around here oh say 5 or even 3 yrs ago.

Close enough.. the 30-45 minutes thing is pretty arbitrary.  Are you likely to be fishing with people from the Portland area.. I think so.  I'll add you.. and I think that goes for the folks up in Hood River if they want.

Greetings Brian.

I joined to let you know there are more of us lurking out there.  I'm in Lake Oswego (along with a few others too..) and I appreciate the posts you make.

What a great sport this is.  I bought my Hobie Outback SUV last spring because I needed more of 1) fishing and 2) exercise.  I've fished mostly for lingcod - both Oregon coast and San Juan islands.  Some crabbing.  Some salmon.  But last week I anchored in the Willy and caught 3 shaker Sturgeon in a couple of hours.  Lost even more.  That is now my favorite target.

So if you see a yellow Hobie near George Rodgers this weekend, shout out.

Andrew

Welcome Deepcolor.  Glad to see you're enjoying some willy sturgeon fishing.  I'm hoping to have a large NWKA gathering in early December to introduce more of the members to this fun fishery.

Make sure you have your other lurker friends check in.  I'd really like a sense of how many of us there are in the Portland area.  This not only helps me find new people to fish with, but it also helps when I talk to various kayak and tackle shops about possibly carrying more kayak fishing related gear.

See you on the water,
Brian

Is Tampa Bay Florida close enough. I just found this site today, this fall we moved to Lafayette from Wasilla AK after 24 years. We will be in FL enjoying the warm weather until April, then we will be working a the KOA in Lincoln City for the summer. I have a camo trident 13. I'm looking forward to doing lots of fishing when I get back to Or. I hope to meet some of you when I get back.

Hey, Brian thanks for the reply. I spent all my teen years working on charter boats out of coos bay. I'm not that familiar with fishing spots on the north coast, so I'll be looking for some info when I get back.

Thanks guys!

Yeah, I ended up driving and grabbing Jim's OK T-11 on Saturday (Thanks Jim!) in not quite harbor buoy mango.  I also finally got around to installing some Yakima bars on the truck canopy and I think I'm ready to roll.  I've been eyeballing the stocking schedules and such late at night, chompin' at the bit.  Hey, I'm ready to learn the bigger fish stuff.

First Posting on a forum ever! I moved to Portland from Dallas, Texas about five years ago. While in Texas I had just started kayak fishing some of the lakes as well as the Gulf. Mainly a fly fisherman, but do have some spinning gear. I have a 13 foot Wilderness System Ride with one rod holder mounted on it (bad placement). Anyhow, I have been looking for a site like this since I moved up here as I am Totally unsure about gear, places, and ways to fish for some of the bigger NW species. On a couple of recon trips to some of the fishing stores I did not feel like they had any idea about kayak fishing (may have just got a few bad associates). Anyhow, I have been reading the posting religiously for the last week and am now really excited to get going again.

So a few questions here, anyone have any opinions about the WS Ride for fishing?

What would be the bare essentials to get started with? Am kinda poor right now and need to be very careful about rushing out to buy all new equipment. Plus, I am getting married in June so most money is going towards that right now.

What species would I have the most success pursuing as a newbie (Least clever or most plentiful fish.)

I work at REI (Downtown) and notice on one of the recent treads that REI in Seattle hosted a kayak fishing presentation. I could make some inquiries about using our meeting space. No Promises but it's worth asking if you'll have interest.

Greetings from Shane (Snarf).  Purchased an '08 Hobie outback last summer. Spent most of my time on the Gilbert river after the purchase. I am very new to kayaking and not much better in the fishing category. The Gilbert river has a variety of species.  I caught sturgeon, smallmouth, walleye, bullhead cats, channel cats, yellow cats, carp, suckers, and sole/flounder.  The variety of fish is what brings me back.  I  put in at Sturgeon lake once and caught several catfish and a 28 inch carp. The cats were all pretty small. Looking to expand my fishing knowledge while safely learning to kayak in different conditions.

I am in the paper industry (Wauna Mill). Wife and 2 kids- Son starts a Cornell in the fall as a freshman (Don't ask me how) daughter starts high school next year. My wife  works at Oregon Chain in their advertising dept.

Hope to get together with NWKA at some of the events coming up.  Still need to rig up the yak.  Torn between getting a fish finder and a drysuit at this point.  The info I've read to date has helped me quite a bit. Knowledge shared is great thing!!

For those of you who don't know, Gilbert river and Sturgeon lake are both on Sauvie Island.  Hope to get to know a whole whack of you in the future.

Welcome aboard Tex!

What model of WS are you paddling?

As for Fish with a high fun ratio, your best best would be stocked trout and small mouth bass.  Between the two species a person doesn't have to travel very far or fish very hard to have a fun day.

Try posting yak specific questions in the Kayak Shed and once the weather warms a bit I'm sure you can find someone to show around a lake or river nearby.  Just post your request for company  on the Oregon board.

I don't think we have met. I've talked with several people at the boat ramp but they were more interested in the fact that I was fishing from a kayak.  I've had no conversations with other kayak anglers in person.  I'd like to though!!

Welcome to both of you. The Portland area has really been blooming with kayak fishing lately. Many of us have only been here a year or two.

Torn between getting a fish finder and a drysuit at this point.

If I was making this choice, based on an entire year of experience  ;D, I'd opt for the dry suit. This will allow you to fish anytime, anywhere around here. A FF helps but you can catch a lot without one as well.

Jay

That's the way I'm leaning (Drysuit).  Believe it or not with the economy in tatters my company (Georgia Pacific) is giving bonuses in the next couple of weeks!  What the wife don't know will hurt me!! ;)

I'm itching to get out again but the H20 is a nogo without protection of some sort.  I've yet to make an unscheduled exit,  I can't believe how stable my outback is.  I'm 6'2" and 250lbs and have a nervous/healthy respect for that which can keep me from the ones I love.  Still trying to figure if I want to go one piece or to for the outerwear.  The web site has given me more and more to consider!

Wait, when did they stop?  ;D  There's no regular hook-up but like I said, post a notice that you want to fish and there's a good chance others will join you.  This time of year most of the fishing is low percentage but huge payoff (Steelhead, Sturgeon, Salmon)

I don't think we have met. I've talked with several people at the boat ramp but they were more interested in the fact that I was fishing from a kayak.  I've had no conversations with other kayak anglers in person.  I'd like to though!!

Some ideas:

-Piggyback it on the Paddling Class
-Willamette Park
-Haag Lake
-Bring a few rigged kayaks along so people can get ideas and ask questions
-Bring along some NWKA stickers and T-Shirts for distribution

I guess Salem would be the outer reaches of the PDX area, but I plan on moving up there in the fall of next year so I'll throw my name in here...
I'm Jeff, handle: yaknitup, and most times I'm paddling a camo Malibu X-Factor, but I also have a gray Malibu Mini-X for the lady or whoever wants to tag along.
I moved up to Salem in 2007 from San Diego where I used to work at a kayak shop that specialized in kayak fishing(www.oeexpress.com). I also worked for Anglers Yak Shack where we made internal bait tanks for yaks. I can't say how excited I am to have found this site!
I've been out to Cape Kiwanda a few times to hit up that amazing black rock fish fishery, but for the most part I have been bank fishing out of a lack of yakin buddies to fish with.
Great site and tight lines!

It takes a little bit to get to anywhere worthwhile from this area, but lots of good fishing and people to paddle/peddle with.

We're sort of in "No Man's Land" with all the utilities and government stuff, the east side of my property butts up to what was the Marquam Hill Vinyards. One mile south of HWY 213.

Hey All!
New in the Portland area.  Lake Oswego, on the Wilamette.  Occasional trips to the Siletz.  Looking forward to some good times on the beautiful Oregon waters.  Jeff is may name.
I have a sand colored Malibu X-Factor and an Advanced Elements 2 man inflatable to bang thru shallow water.
I am relatively new to the game but spent quite a bit of time out of san Clemente, CA looking for sea bass, halibut, lobster when the surf vanished.
Thank you!  Looks like an amazing site and a great group!

day (1, 2 or 3 day) licenses are reasonable, allow you to catch all species (salt/fresh etc), and you can re-buy as often as you like.  Now is a great time of year to be a yak fishermen in the NW, don't wait till next year to get in on the action, its a long wet winter ;D

Greetings!

I thought I would introduce myself here as this is the closest section I found for a generic section. Anyway... I hope I found the right place...

The names is Erik, and I live in Creswell Oregon (just South of Eugene). I bought a Wilderness Systems Commander 120 Angler this past spring and have enjoyed it several times (but never enough!) already this last year on the water. I'm looking to associate with other fellow locals that know the ropes and might offer up a few of there favorite kayak fishing secrets.

I've fished all my life in all types of water, but I still consider myself a novice. I guess that's why they call it "fishing" and not "catching". I'd like to hook up with any group or individuals going out somewhere here in Oregon on the weekends. I'm up for rivers, lakes or I'm anxcious to try going out in the ocean. Drop me an email or PM.

Welcome! you should hook up with Coosbayyakker for some Sunset Bay lessons! Was there today (and thus drove through Creswell on my way home) and got to learn how that area of the coast works... since it's not self bailing, i'd personally be a bit nervous about it on the salt, but if you're in an area sans surf launch, it should prove itself useful!
Title: Re: Wet behind the ears<------newbie here

Welcome to NWKA BV. Like he said Sunset would be a good choice on a calm day and offers plenty of different levels of excitement, depending on comfort and skill level. Give me a heads up if you plan to come this way and do my best to get out there with ya, or at least give you some pointers on where to go, or not go..

I'll most likely be heading up to Dexter a couple times ths year to help a friend do some work on his house. Was planning on splashing the Kayak at Dexter Reservoir or others while I'm there. I'll post a heads up on here if and when i do. Company is always welcome.

Welcome Eric,

We should hook up.  I live in Eugene.  I usually fish on the weekends.  I might hit a local or coastal lake this week end (need to start on some atoy points).  If your wanting to hit the salt when the ocean calms done the guys right about sunset bay being the best area for your first time on the salt.

At first I thought my post was deleted. I started to get a little offended, then I found it here. Yeah I'm form Oregon, but would have never have though to look here under the Portland roll call topic. Any other BB's I've been on there was a "newbies" section just for this type of thing. Just a suggestion...

So I've got to tell you, I have been reading up- particularly on the important issue of immersion gear. Because of the opinions and advice from this forum I now have a new perspective on what to look for in purchasing a wetsuit or other options listed in other posts. Though the summer I've got away with layering and good rain gear, but recognized I need to invest in some better personal gear. Second is reconsidering my boat in what I thought was the right choice for me, But now I am second guessing myself thinking I should have got a self bailing SOT. Don't get me wrong, I really like my WS Commander and all the features it has. In fact I've had it in several of the local rivers in rapids and it has faired VERY well with its pontoon design. I did have to do a bit of bailing with my hand bilge pump, and about 2 minutes later- dry as a bone. This is my third kayak I own, but perhaps it's in the bonz to start shopping for a fourth. LOL! I bought it from Alder Creek. Do they do trade ins? ::)

Dana- Are you fishing for bass/bluegill? I might even bring my son along. He'd get a kick out of that. I wish the weather report was sayin' something different than it is. How come you're not hitt'n the Sturgeon tourney on Saturday? This has been tempting me, however, because of the aforementioned gear issues, I better sit this one out and do some shopping.

Erik
Title: Re: Portland Crew Roll Call
Post by: yaksurf on January 12, 2011, 10:11:02 PM
Eric,
Immersion gear is life saving.  I skipped the wet suit option and went straight to dry gear (dry pants first).
The sturgeon tourney is very tempting.  I decided not to go several weeks ago.
If I lived closer and was more familiar with the waters up there I'd be in.
Not sure were or what I'll fishing for.  Thought I'd look at the weather tomorrow and decide.  My first choice would be a coastal lake second local lake.

I'm planning a fishing trip on the 30th of this month on either the Columbia River or Willamette for some smallmouth action. If anyone is interested just shoot me an email. - Mark

Most of you are starting to know me , but might as well do the roll call thing.I'm in N.E. Portland, should have my lime green Cobra Marauder within the week.

Most my gear is for stream/smaller river fishing/lakes.  4-12lb test line sorta tells you the story. At some point during the year though, I plan to try to get a steelhead from the kayak using some existing gear. They are any of 3 8' rods, 1 trolling, 1 spinning rod, one bait-casting. I think its still good gear on a kayak, your opinions will count to that, if I'm doing something right, I could likely do it better. Ocean fishing to come as time passes, which is why I'm here.

     Forrest.

Wow, I was over a year behind on updating the list and I  just spent about 15 minutes catching up.  We've had 18 new members to the PDX crew since my last update (welcome aboard!) and we are now up to 66 members total.   Sure, some members have come and gone since I started the list a few years ago, but the list is still pretty impressive, with lots of regular posters, AOTY participants and folk that show up to our monthly-esque meetings.   I hope to see many of you at the Oregon Rockfish Classic next month in Depoe Bay.

David - keeps 1 kayak with boat in Portland at Roger's Marina on Marine Dr. and 1 with me most of the time.  So far just use em for site seeing.   2 years ago I rented kayaks with my daughter (10yo) on Hood Canal.  Last Summer she said how much fun we had and wanted to go again so I bought 2 beginner kayaks.  Brand new to this site but I can't wait to start fishing with it.  She and I are both excited to join the AOTY and hopefully be contenders.
Anyone who would like to show me the ropes would be welcomed.

Actually a Striped Marlin, got down in Cabo a few years back.  The fight of my life and personal best to date.  After a 50 minute tug of war I won.  Kind of a bummer, I wanted to catch and release but when the deck hand grabbed the bill I turned to grab a much needed drink of water and when I turned back it was gaffed and clubbed.  It never broke the surface the entire fight and when it was over the captain said if they don't break water within 15 seconds they cut the line.  When I asked him why he said "too much work".  Boy howdy.  An awesome day, 122 boats went out and only one  marlin caught.  I was treated like royalty when we got back to the dock.  Free drinks, free food and if I had been single, well..........

Any time to fish with other yakkers. That is one thing I miss about fishing la Jolla in SD. There were always other yaks in the water even way back in 2002.

Old Market Pub ends up being a popular meeting place, as three of us live within a half mile of there. It's been awhile since we've had a meet up, but maybe it's about time we get that going again. The best up coming event will be the Springer Clinic,
