My man trip for the year.....woo hoo! can't come soon enough lol (September)

Well i'm registered ( reserved spot ) for the Salmon kayak derby out at Moutcha bay....really looking forward to this trip, i have 2 days before the trip to try the Tyee pool before going to the resort. Then 2 days after for some fresh water Kokanee action in Hope BC.

Any good tackle stores that are friendly and would actually help a guy from Alberta land some fish from a yak?
And is any one in the Campbell river area maybe up for meeting up to do some fishing in September (1,2) maybe share a tip or trick ;)

Thanks in Advance and tight lines!

I paddle the Campbell River/Quadra Island area often.  There are two spots that are quite popular for the CR sport fishing crowd (power boats).

One is the "Green Can", a buoy south of Cape Mudge on Quadra Island.  Salmon there are typically found very deep 200ft+.  This can be an uncomfortable spot for some in a kayak as if there is a SE wind, the fetch from the Straight and the tidal activity could make for an exciting on the water.  Although this is a popular spot with the local power-boaters, this would not be my first choice to fish out of kayak.

Second is Browns Bay, a short bit north of Campbell River.  This puts you on the "Salmon Highway" between Quadra and Vancouver Islands.  Between Browns Bay and Campbell River is Seymour Narrows.  I STRONGLY DISCOURAGE anyone unfamiliar with tidal rapids to paddle near Seymour Narrows.  If you launch at Browns Bay, do so on the start of the ebb and fish north.  Better yet, travel 30kms north to Elk Bay and put in there.  Good kayak fishing is had at Elk Bay; on the Vancouver Island side or on a 30 minute paddle over to the Quadra/Sonora Island side.  Elk Bay keeps you in the fish but out of the rapids and is a great public camping site.

As for the Tyee Pool.  I understand the marketing behind it and why it would be a buck-list type of thing to do.  Personally, I avoid that area altogether.  I don't see the purpose of taking a breeding fish out of the system.

As far as tackle stores, I can vouch for Trotac Marine and Island Outfitters in Victoria.  In Campbell River, I would likely shop at River Sportsman or Tyee Marine.

Enjoy your trip to the Island and best of luck in the derby.

I am tied up with family commitments at the beginning of September but if you have any more questions about the CR or Southern Vancouver Island area, I will try my best to answer them.
