Title: DIY Kayak Storage Cart
Post by: Beer_Run on July 24, 2021, 04:45:11 PM
Finally got around to making my kayak storage rack, mobile. The original plan was to mount casters on a piece of plywood and attached my stand to it. Then I looked up what a sheet of plywood costs!?!!  I missed when they started making plywood out of platinum.  At that point, I happened to look at an old crappy pallet that was laying around my place and it turns out it is a perfect size. Then the search was on for a nicer one. Ended up picking one up behind New Seasons in Tualatin (they offered). Turned out great and almost by accident the Kayak is now almost exactly bed height on the truck. Loading and unloading is crazy easy. Lock two wheels and slide it in/out.

It is only the outer veneer that is platinum. ;)

But the interior layers are coated with pure palladium...

Interesting cart, BR.  Great accident that it ended up being just about the perfect height to slide your kayak into your truck.

That's sweet - thanks for posting.  I'm tired of hoofing my yak around the garage when I need to get access to my scrap wood pile, so I will be building something similar soon.  A buddy of mine gave me some burst fire hose (compliments of 2020 fire near Henry Hagg) which I will use for the support straps.  If anyone wants some of the extra ~40 ft or so of kevlar hose, about 3" wide when flat, just shoot me a PM.  I'm in Corvallis.

I made a version of this cart and really like it.  You wind up with a lot of good storage underneath, and the bunks allow the yak to slide right off.  Can be modified to easily hold 2 kayaks if it’s made wide enough on lower level.

I never put wheels on them but I suppose it could be done.

For anyone that lives near a habitat rebuilt it store, Re-store (Portland), etc...they usually have GOBS of casters which you can get for 50 cents to a dollar a piece - so if convenient try there first rather than paying $5+ each at HD or HF.  Just a consideration for you more frugal types like myself.

I was going to build the one from Kayak USA, but wood is so expensive. I just made one from an old bunk bed the kids grew out of until the wood prices get better. I also left out a few boards so I can install my drive in case I ever need to work on it. TJ just got a PA and put a boondocks kit on it and I saw he also installed peg board on the side for storage. Link to his build. https://youtu.be/vXuI3biA9hU

Repurposing at its best!

Both the cart in the video and the re-purposed bed are solid, but are the PA's different from other kayaks and can be stored upright, on their keels, without causing problems?
