If conditions are favorable, I'll likely go.
A day without fishing probably wouldn't kill me,
but why risk it?

Staying in PC Thur-Sun. Planning on hitting the Nehalem Thur. Stopped by the ramp in Wheeler and there was a handful of nice big Chinook caught above the bridge. Depending on Thur success/failure I may join Friday. Saturday I have a Dory ride from a buddy of mine.

Here is hoping for improving conditions.

You've been out in a 10-foot kayak in conditions like those forecast?

5.5 ft every 11 seconds? Good day for surfing or ending up on the news.

Hopefully the forecast improves. Otherwise that’ll be a swell day.

I've done 6@12 seconds before. My "roughest" day that I actually knew what the swells were. I've found as long as the period is at least twice the height you're usually okay. It will not be flat but it's doable.

It's the wind that's the killer, big difference between 2' and 3' wind waves. Especially when it's coming from an opposite direction the swells are, that is why people usually avoid going out on South wind days because the swells are usually coming from the N/NW.  And it's usually at lot more volatile than the ocean swells too. Changing direction, speed, sometimes as often as every 10, 15 mins.

If the period of the swells was long enough I would definitely go out over the weekend. Wind looks great!

When looking at the forecast do you guys add the secondary swell to get the total wave height?

If there happens to be a secondary swell absolutely  add it to the primary. Because they can, and will stack sometimes

Good to know about the South wind—I’ve heard that mentioned before.

Hopefully things shape up! The 5.5’ primary coupled with the 1.2-1.5’ secondary and .8-1.2’ tertiary has me queasy just thinking about it.

Problem with MSW is it is really only accurate just past the surf. NOAA is not forecasting any secondary and 1' wind waves for Friday. Granted NOAA is not very accurate very far out. Ocean conditions change must faster than weather conditions, thus harder to predict. I usually look at MSW, NOAA, Windy.com and an app on my phone (name escapes me right now)  the morning of my trip right before I leave to decide if I'm going or not that day.

NOAA forecasts are reasonably accurate from 1nm out.  They aren't overly concerned with nearshore conditions because of all the variables involved as a swell approaches land.

I dunno man...if it's going to be your first time on the salt, I'd wait for a better day. Rest assured, there will be many more days this summer where there is no threat of a south wind and the swell will be smaller. The trouble with a bigger swell at PC and surf launches in general is that even if you get out, coming back in without yardsale-ing could be tricky. Aim for a day where it's like 3 @ 10 seconds or something, and it'll be far less stressful.

Unless you're really just looking to ride some waves and aren't concerned about wiping out and losing gear/fish  :D.

I'm with Clayman on this one .That south wind is a killer, You just don't know really what it might do.
