UG. I don't know that I will be making it. The 19th is our 20 year together anniversary. I am not a very romantic sort of a person, but even I can realize taking a road trip to Richland probably isn't very romantic. At least in some people's eyes.

It doesn’t get much more romantic than the Brownlee Crappie Shootout.  Bring an extra kayak for her to fish with you, have a tent spot with a lake view and a fire. Maybe an evening walk along the lake to the gazebo.  It’s all in how it is sold to her.

Stealth Rod Holders will be donating a couple QR Holders to the Brownlee Crappie Shootout this year. Stealth Holders are easy to use and super strong. They feature a Cam Locking system to hold your rod in place to prevent your rod from spinning and keep it securely in your kayak. It also allows for easy hook setting with a single lift and set motion. This holder will work for all types of fishing from trolling to still fishing. Find them online at www.stealthrodholders.com/ or at an increasing amount of local shops. Thanks for the support Cari and Jason!

SKWOOSH sent two kayak cushion pads for the prize table. I have been using these for several years and find my self taking them along even on non kayak trips. The family likes them for bleacher seats at games to add comfort as well as a barrier for wet seats. They are foldable and compact and will easily fit into a bag or backpack for easy transport. Find them online at www.skwoosh.com/ Thank you Katie.

Considering this as my first kayak tournament.
I still have a lot to sort out first.
I haven't fished there in decades.
How far do you typically have to paddle to have a shot?

The tournament as been won more than once from within sight of the launch and your tent. Most people fish the Powder river arm immediately in front of the park. The farthest you have to travel to is the first couple of river bends. All 7-8 species can be found very close.

Light action rod and reel. 4-6lb line. Ned Rigs will catch every species. I have other lures and plastics that I will share but it's super simple to fish. It's legal to use bait so worms would be good to have. A couple small plugs for trolling and you are set.

What days are you planning to be there? I can ask around to see if anyone would like to split a spot. There are tent camping spots on the grass or you can pitch a tent on the smaller RV spots on the Hewitt side.

Anyone?
Hey SD2OR if you are on FB you could try posting up in some of the kayak fishing groups. Lower Columbia Kayak Anglers, Tri City Kayak Anglers, and Kayak Fishing Addicts NW would be a few. If nothing else you could make reservations and see if you could jump on someone's site when you get down there. I don't think they charge for the reserve. You can cancel if you find someone to double up with. My family is coming down those days so we are staying at the motel but there should be a bunch of single campers down there.

Drifter had a great idea! As a joint effort with the BCS and AOTY we will be having a special prize for the angler that is signed up in both tournaments and has the highest score at the Brownlee Crappie Shootout 7.This will be treated as a side challenge. There will also be extra goodies in the captains bags at the BCS for those that are signed up in the AOTY.

Hope to see you there.

I would like to remind everyone to check the weather for Richland, OR for May 21 and bring appropriate clothing and safety gear. It looks like the high will be in the 50's and lows in the 30's so bring some warm gear. Dry suit would be good if you have one. See you all there. Thanks.

Waiting on vacation approval.
I don't have a bump board. Will any be available?
Never fished a tournament.
Are there any spaces left to camp?
I have a van with an awesome awning.

I have space for someone else at my tent only, non-electric campsite, if anyone is in need of a place to stay.

I believe other measuring devices are valid, as long as you get a good pic..... emphasis in good pics, I've had some terrible ones lately! Plus, if you're keeping the fish, I'm sure someone can lend a board once you land

Well, I've been watching the weather as the date gets closer and things look to be improving. Weather is warming a little and we may have a decent game day. Fingers crossed.

You can use pretty much anything to measure your fish. Like SD2OR said they have to be clear pix or Justin will get grumpy. Any type of measure board or even a tape measure or other measuring device will work. Just make sure you have the event identifier in the pic. There should be spaces open or you can sleep in your van in a parking space for a camping fee I believe. I promise you won't be living in a van down by... uh... Just make it over and we'll work something out. :D

Thanks for the info and warm welcome.
Now to decide between fishing this and prefishing the lost lake.
I'm on a shoe string budget. I ordered a yack attack folding bump board.
Is there reception on t mobile at the park?

This would be my very first tournament.
Any advice welcome.
How did I register?

The reception at the park is spotty at best but Richland is only about a mile away and all carriers usually have service there. I have verizon and can get service on the water in places. You can show up and pay the entry fee which is registration. There is a captains meeting at 7 pm on Friday and I'll have waivers there. Minimal gear needed Ned, crappie tube, a couple plugs, and a carton of worms could win the whole burrito.

Hello all.  I just finished uploading 951 images of BCS7.  I think Jed might post something about it later.  If you haven't used smugmug before, YOU DON'T HAVE TO BUY IMAGES

You can download any image that you want for free.  If you would like a print, you can buy those directly from the site.  We took a lot of photos, some good, some bad.

There are a lot of photos from behind people.  Turns out, most people like to face the shore when fishing it.  Who knew?   I hope you can find something worth saving.

Thanks again to everybody that came out to visit.  I hope you all enjoyed the event and come back again.

One last thing.  I am not a professional photographer.  This is a new hobby for me.  Try not to be to judgmental on the quality.  I'm working on it.

Many thanks to all who helped make the event possible, was a ton of fun.
Great people, great prizes, great food, great fishing...for some anyway, LOL!
The setting and tent camp sites were wonderful.
It was over a six hour drive for me, but most of it was really pretty.
Anyone who hasn't done BCS, should definitely try it next year!

The Brownlee Crappie Shootout 7 is in the books and everyone that participated had a great time. Huge thank you going out to the event sponsors, participants, Baker County, CASA of Eastern Oregon, Graphix Wear Ontario, Justin, and friends and family that helped out to make this happen. I am very thankful and appreciate the support.

The weather cooperated for the most part but a big thunderstorm rolled in at about 1. Anglers were already heading in to the check in area so it didn't have a huge impact. It wouldn't be a BCS without some crazy weather.

With the entry fees and raffle we were able to raise more than $2400 for a CASA of Eastern Oregon donation this year. This is the most we have ever been able to raise and we look forward to trying to match or beat it next year.

This year was set to be a tough year to win the coveted buckle, not because the fishing was bad but quite the opposite. Anglers that were pre fishing leading up to Saturday reported that the fish had not spawned yet due to the weather extremes we've been having coming out of Winter. Everything seemed to be at least a month behind schedule but this made for some great fishing for everyone.

It seemed like all species were staging right at the drop offs near the shallows and were on the feed. Crappie were large this year with the average fish being 12 to 13 inches and some in the 15" range were landed prior to the event. The boat anglers at the camp were catching massive specimens in the 17 inch range. Bass were staged and crushed lures and baits at full speed. We even saw an abundance of yellow perch throughout the venue that were averaging 11 inches or so. The only drawbacks we saw were a small class of catfish in the 13" range and very few trout during pre fishing with no one catching any on game day.

This year's winner was an angler that attended all seven Brownlee Crappie Shootout tournaments and finally put everything together on event day. Congratulations to Mark Veary on winning this year. He has always been hovering near the top of the finishers list and put together a great score this year.

Second place went to Evan Merz. Evan is a past BCS winner and is another angler that is figuring out the reservoir. He consistently places well and is always trying to be the first two time winner. Evan won a prize pick and a second coping blankie donated by Jurissah Naive.

Third place went to last years winner Mike Ragland. Mike has his own style of fishing where he takes a stroll with some plugs and returns with some great fish. I believe he will have some company tailing him next year.

Rounding out the top 10 anglers were a mix of BCS veterans and some first timers to the event. With the multi species format it's always a toss up to see who will win and anyone has a chance to take home the buckle.

Category winners:

Crappie- 14.5" Darrin Roberts

Small Mouth Bass- 17.5" Jesse Burgess

Large Mouth Bass- 17.75" Chris Bordes

Catfish- 24.25" Kevin Redden

Yellow Perch- 13" Hoku Lau

Panfish- 7" Evan Merz

Our Mack's Lure Challenge winner was Jim Davis for the highest points fish on Mack's gear.

Our AOTY co op winner was Evan Merz with the top placement from within the NWKA AOTY participant pool.

Justin took a bunch of pictures that you can view at https://justinflynn.smugmug.com/Brownlee-Crappie-Shootout-7

Huge THANK YOU to everyone and hope to see you next year- jed

Such a cool event.  Good news for CASA.  Thanks to everyone involved who makes it possible.  If you've never participated, put it on the calendar for next year.  You won't be disappointed.
