- WEAR IMMERSION GEAR APPROPRIATE TO OREGON COASTAL WATER TEMPS

- ACTIVELY SEEK TO MINIMIZE IMPACT ON POWERED VESSELS (at the launch and on the water)
- FOLLOW ALL DEPOE BAY REGULATIONS FOR ENTRY TO AND EXIT FROM THE HARBOR DURING THE CONTEST
- FOLLOW ALL ODFW REGULATIONS APPROPRIATE TO THE AREA
- ALL FISH MUST BE AT THE WEIGH IN STATION BY 2:00PM
- ALL ANGLERS MUST CHECK IN AT THE WEIGH IN BOOTH AFTER THEIR RETURN (We will hunt you down if you do not)

But you can swim faster with a cleanly shaven body.  You may fall out of your yak.

Personally I thought Dana's head worked the most naturally.  He looks so happy using his air splits skills.

Looks like we're in, well don't know if wife will fish, she's heard rumors of "The Landlord" in those vicinities, I told her there is a sign at the entrance to the Strait that says, "No Sharks allowed".

A couple of questions, What is this OREGON INVASIVE SPECIES PERMIT?

Will my whistle serve as a signalling device?

Are these sort of questions addressed elsewhere?

You can get one of these where they sell Oregon Fishing Licenses IIRC

The Invasive Species Permit is another $7 you get to pay for the priviledge of splashing your boat in OR waters.  It's "supposed" to pay for monitoring and mitigation of invasive foreign organisms in OR waters.

IIRC they wanted folks to have an air horn from what I read from last year's threads.  But I don't know what counts as a signaling device for this case so I'll just say that I'm also interested in the official answer.

Do waders and a dry top qualify as appropriate immersion wear?
Title: Re: OFFICIAL ORC 2012 ANNOUNCEMENT
Post by: craig on April 22, 2012, 08:45:15 PM
It is cheapest to get the Oregon invasive species permit from REI.  They are $4.99 there. But, it may be worth paying the $2 rather than driving from the place that sells the fishing licenses to an REI.  Although, Dick's is on the same exit as REI off I-5 in Tualatin.  They are on opposite sides of the freeway.

A whistle is adequate for most venues.  At Depoe Bay, there's a protocol where-by you're supposed to use an airhorn to signal passage thru the mouth once clearance is given on VHF Chanel 80.  We encourage people to shoot the gap in packs (thus minimizing impact on other vessels).  If you don't have an air horn, simply hook up with a group for entry or exit.  Only one person in the group needs to signal.

This is a fine place for those types of questions.  As time allows, I'll post a Frequently Asked Questions thread to consolidate all of the info.

Here's a helpful discussion about the setting and procedures for Depoe Bay from a couple of years ago.  I think I've referenced it a few times over the last couple of years because it answers a lot of questions.

Im really bummed about the schedule conflict. Team Bridgeport will be finishing up Lake County Tour 8 and then Im headed south. It wouldve been great to drag the whole team up with me.
The ORCfest was the best tournament experience I have had .  I really dug the horn blast leaving the safety of the harbor then charging out into the washing machine. (Gave me the permagrin)
I still hope to make it up for Spot's surf day. I believe that a day in the waves without the tackle is an important part of a healthy safety culture. Its also superfun

You can also pick up a mouth air horn at REI for about $3.  They can be heard for over a mile.  I bought one because my air horns kept leaking.

I don't know if I will be able to make the Saturday hunt.  The pension just isn't enough so I am working part time (at WorldMark, just up the street).  I'm gonna see if I can get that day off, BUT, I only get a limited amount of vacation time and my son is getting married in August and I'm making the wedding cake.   It will be VERY difficult to be at work, cleaning patios and the like, and looking out at all those kayaks on the salt, havin a ball!

On another note.  Since I live here, I think I can state, rather astutely (is that a word?) that Rawkfish has the signaling idea, Spot on (no pun intended).

MOST vessels do not signal entry or exit of the throat with an air horn.  In fact, the only one I ever hear (from my house) is the Coast Guard.  They signal every time.  But they have strict guidelines.  In my talks with the officer(s) on duty, it is general knowledge that a VHF radio and announcements are FAR more required and usefull than an air horn blast.  It is extremely rare that I see or hear a vessel enter or exit without an announcement on channel 80.  When it does happen, it is usually a visiting vessel (not one I recognize).  Likewise, it is extremely rare that I see or hear a vessel enter or exit with the use of an air horn blast.  In fact, in my two plus years here, the only vessels (other than the Coast Guard) that I have heard use a horn blast, was a kayak in the group I was in at last year's ORC.

So, radio, YES.  Horn...... well, if you want to, but it's not frequently heard outside of the throat anyway.  And when you announce (for that day at least) announce HOW MANY kayaks are coming out.  The charter guys will appreciate that, instead of idling and waiting and guessing.

Last thing, then I'll shut-up.  The throat IS curved, and prevents one from seeing the ocean side (or harbor side as you enter).  The natural curve is to the right, when exiting,  as you get near the end of it.  For that reason, I suggest kayaks stay to the left side of the throat.  That way, as you make the curve, you will have sight alignment of the opening to the ocean sooner than if you were on the right.  Single file (as mentioned) and probably limit it to 4 kayaks at a time.  The next group should hold back a few minutes before going out.  And as soon as you exit (I'd guess about 100 feet out) head to the north or south to get out of the vessel channel.  Depending, of course, on where the breakers are, if any, the current, wind, etc.  And hey, the fishin ain't bad just a tad bit out anyway!   ;D

Spot I just reserved Friday and Saturday night. As long as you tell them you're there for the ORC they should give you the group rate. It's 15.00 a night.

Are specific species targeted at the ORC or do any AOTY fish count?  I'm wondering if anybody tries for halibut.  Looking forward to it! :)

A question from a "foreigner":  I'm planning to pour some swimbaits for the event.  Can anybody suggest what colors might be best?  Are 4 oz. leadheads big enough?

3-4 oz is normal

bigger the better for swimbaits:

white for lings
rootbeer/brown for cabbies

A little birdie told me that Big Hammer will be providing samples to all contestants before we paddle out.....  If it's a load like last year, you'll make back a big chunck of your entry fee right there.   ;D

Gotta say though, it was worth their investment.  I and many others have since bought up all we can find.

Maybe we should have to use their freebies for the tourney.  ;D  I plan to anyways since my others from last year are all chewed up by lings and cabbies.  I have melted my favorite back together 4 times with my soldering iron.  I was going to toss it after the last trip when it got split open by a cabzilla, but I couldn't bring myself to do that.  Therefore, it received the soldering iron treatment yet again.  I think it still has a ling or two left in it before it is retired.

FYI:  I stopped by Coast Guard Station Depoe Bay yesterday and spoke with the officer in charge.  He actually remembered us from last year and again made the comment that the ORC 2012 was one of the best demonsrtations of "Safe Boating" they'd every seen.  He was especially impressed by our safety measures (Safety Flags and Immersion Wear) and our protocols (Group transit and fishing, Communications and Teamwork).

I invited them to have a CG emmisary on hand at the check-in / weigh-in station.

I'm thinking a basket of muffins or some such is in order for these guys who work so hard to keep us safe.

Lurecraft.com.  There's no need to buy a starter kit   You will get things you don't need.  I have one purchased mold and one that I made by making a polymer clay mold of a swimbait and pouring mold rubber around it.  There are some pretty good videos available that show how to and what is really needed.  I heat with a microwave oven in my garage and always wear a respirator.  The fumes can be nasty but creating your own baits can be a great activity.  I use lots of different colors and layers with glitter and sometimes hollow cavities for attractants to be injected.  I buy the Alumisol plastic by the gallon and that makes a lot of baits.  Each bait is about 1 oz. of material.  PM me if you want more info.

There is no starting gun.  People tend to filter out for the 1st couple of hours, depending on how much Ninkasi they had the night before.

A cart really helps but you can drive down and drop off your yak and gear on the left hand side of the launch.

The only real 'procedure' is to be courteous at the ramp.  That means not monopolizing the only launching lane for any longer than you have to.  It's really easy to ferry kayaks down to the dock adjacent to the ramp.  This is the prefered method.  If anybody is around, I guarantee they'll help out if asked.

You can park in the main lot but most of the spots are for truck/trailer combos.  Feel free to use them but make sure that you share a spot with another vehicle.  There's also parking at the top of the hill and over in the park.

Somebody needs to start a hookup thread for putting together groups to fish the event.  This really helps to overcome obstacles such as not having a ride/cart/vhf/knowlege etc.

There is also an honor system launch fee station right at the top of the ramp.  I can't remember if it was $3 or $5 bucks.
Please toss some bills in to help keep the launch open and operational for our enjoyment.
We use the facilities, launch, parking etc... so we are all obligated to contribute not just the power boaters.

Just for fun, we could put our own individual contributions into envelopes with Kayaker written on the envelope to really show the great folks down there that we
are legit anglers and do contribute.   8)

I'd like to extend my normal offer.  Are you new to the kayak fishing or new to the salt?  Well, have I got a deal for you!   ::)   I'm offering to take you out and teach you how to win a tournament, errr ... teach you some tips and tricks on how to safely and effectively approach fishing in the salt.  This offer is good for 2 people.  You must supply your own kayak and wear clothing appropriate for immersion (wetsuit or drysuit).  No gear?  No worry, I can/will supply fishing gear if needed.

See you all soon!

Aaaawwww Yeah!  Pimp Daddy Polepole is in the kayak fishing Hayous!

I've been out in the salt a few times, but still trying to figure it all out.  Have most of the gear, but might need some jigs, etc.  If it's OK with you I'd like to take that second slot.  If you'd rather save it for someone even newer that's fine.

I recommend eating a ton of greasy food and staying up late pounding the beers the night before, then not have any breakfast and skip the sea sick meds.  Gives us all something to chuckle at and the seagulls always appreciate a free rainbow yawn buffet.   Flat forecasts are boring >:D

A memorable moment from the ORC 2010

Lee: Head down, busily tying a knott
Spot: Notices that Lee is a lovely shade of green "Hey, HEY HEY!!! Don't look down.  Keep your eyes on the horizon"
Lee: Pivots head unsteadily upward "Thanks!"
Spot: Sees Lee with his head down again working on the same knott "HEY!!  Lee!!  Look up!!!"
Lee: Releases an epic technicolor yawn into his own lap.....

That's not true Mark.  I stayed up late, prepping with copious amounts of rum and beer, ate a healthy breakfast of mountain house chicken with noodles, and drank a red bull.  You know it's not possible to get sick after prepping like that.  I do appreciate you escorting me half way back to the harbor though!  And giving me keys to your ride so I could get some dramamine and head back out!  I caught my very first ling after that.

I've since learned that good sleep, no alcohol, no caffiene, and not looking down are the secret.

2011 ORC, I was one of the last to come in, and didn't get sick.

So far this year I've been in swells at least 5 times with no medication, and the closest I got to sick was after 2 hours of 4-6 foot fun at Hobuck over the shallow reef.

Seriously folks, if you're concerned or unsure about seasickness do these things:

Get good sleep
Eat something, an empty stomach will hurl
Don't drink alcohol the night before
Don't drink caffiene that morning
Take a pill if you don't know (in other words, if you haven't been out in salt yet)
If you have sinus issues, neti pot the night before and the morning of

Do you have to check all of your fish in at one time or can you check some in and go back out?  The reason I'm asking is, the 16th is a backup all depth halibut day and there is plenty of quota left.  You can't retain any ground fish with a halibut on board on all depth days.  It would be kind of cool to target near shore butts first, check in the fish, then go back out and pick up a limit of rockfish.

You can check in fish assuming the weighin station is open.  And nothing prevents you from dropping them in a cooler in your car, going back out, then weighing them in when the weighin station is open.

Thanks for the response.....One more stupid question....Where does everyone park at the launch?  I've seen tickets left on windows for cars and trucks that park in the trailer spots when I took my boat out tuna fishing.  Granted, this was 4 years ago, but is there some special arrangement?  The parking lot can get crowded on a fishable all depth halibut day.

You do have a chance at getting one, but make sure you understand the all depth weekend stuff.  If it's an all depth weekend, it means that you can either have bottom fish(rockfish, lings, cabs) in your kill bag, or halibut, not both.  If you do want to give halibut a shot, go and try to get one first thing in the morning.  Then if you do get one, head back to shore and put it on ice, then get back on the water and get your bottom fish.

It was decided years ago that only rockfish, lingcod, cabezon and greenling would count towards points.

We haven't had any issues with this in the past two years but I suppose it's always a possiblity.  Parking is at your own discretion.  Personally, I plan on parking in the main lot if it's not already filled with trailers.

How about sculpin also? They are a rockfish even... In CBY's tourney last year out of Sunset I lost to second place to yacksurf because sculpin didnt count.

I had never seen such a big sculpin before, but he was tastey non the less!

A cabezon is a sculpin.  ;)  The smaller type of sculpin you're referring to, such as a buffalo scuplin, would count I guess.  But the sculpins you find around Depoe Bay(except cabezon) are not likely to be bigger than the greenling, rockfish or lings you'll catch in the area.

don't beat me up to much but I was wondering.

I didn't notice until a couple days ago that all the talk about immersion wear was is either a dry suit, wet suit, or waders with dry top.

I have fish the Puget Sound, Hubock, and Ilwaco with Chest waders(with wader belt) and rain top.  The question is for ORC which I have already signed up and paid for will I need to find a dry top or dry suit to comply with the rules or will my set up work?

Please don't even attempt it.  A rain top isn't even close to a dry top and the Pacific Ocean is damn cold.
Either pony up and get yourself a dry top, or plan to work the weigh in station or something?

Semi dry tops are pretty reasonable.  They have neck and wrist gaskets made of neoprene instead of latex material.  A good idea with these is to wear a good belt around the waist of the top to provide a good seal.

don't beat me up to much but I was wondering.

I have a size large semi dry-top (neoprene gasket in the neck, latex in the sleeves) that I will bring if you don't have one by then.  It may stink like sturgeon slime and quality craft beer, though.  For some reason those two get mixed a lot on the Willamette.  If you do look for one remember, a paddle jacket is NOT the same as a dry-top.  The least expensive option I have found is a close-out via Next Adventure in PDX.  They have this one (only up to size large) for $99.  I have never used it, so I can't speak to its comfort or quality.

As a size reference, I am 6'0" and fluctuate between 195 and 200 pounds and can wear a large dry-top over a fleece parka and other layers.

I have that top and will be wearing it with neoprene  breathable chest waders.  I find it comfortable and it keeps me dry.  It does have the inside cover to fit over a whitewater skirt also.

Spot, I am going down on Thursday. Do you need me to bring anything down?  Can I do anything to help you set up on Friday?

Thank you everyone for your generous offers to let me borrow the immersion gear unfortunately I don't think I will fit any of them.  I have done some research and it looks like I will need a XXL dry suit as I am 6'5" 270lbs.  I would guess a XL dry top may work not sure though until I try it on.  Unless anyone out there as any XXL stuff that would be so generous to let me borrow it for the tournament.  I think I will have to go with a rental place I found that may have a XXL dry suit for $40 for 2-4 days so I may just do that for the tournament (crossing my fingers that they have something for me).

Again thanks to everyone that offered to help me out

You may be lucky for needing an XXL. There seems to always be close -out sales where sizes xs, s,  and xxl are available.

* Panfish Portrait Camera Pole

Damn! The seas are going to be littered with ATV flags!

Are there any additional safety concerns with the group getting this big? Does someone check that all the participants return back to the ramp?

We could just make it a requirement to check in at the weigh station, whether you have fish or not, so your number can be checked off.

Yeah, I was thinking about last year.  When everyone handed in their waiver, they got a poker chip with their number on it.  The list had everyones number on it and the fish were recorded next to their number.

And at what point in the day does "someone" with the list start contacting Coasties to go look for those that didn't catch a fish, and forgot to check back in?
Mentioning it in an announcement may not be enough motivation for a fish eluded, exhausted guy that is just thinking of a hot shower and cold beer to remember.
Just saying.....

Maybe provide a token of motivation with a chance for a high dollar raffle item back at the potluck/awards.
The poker chips last year were a great way to keep track of our numbers, so possibly have a raffle ticket tossed into a can with our number sharpied on it when we check back in (fish or no fish).

Just ideas, feel free to roll your eyes at anytime.

If the Tandem Island can be of service as a rescue or service boat during ORC I'm more than happy to just sail around and check on folks, bring drinks, etc.

I'm not as competitive about fishing as I am about tennis. I think it would just be fun to cruise around and greet all the yakers and take pics and video. I've got an extra seat for a crew member if anyone wants to join me any time.

I hope to fish Thursday afternoon, Friday and Saturday. Maybe even Sunday and Monday.

MSW is calling for 3.5 increasing to 4 by noon, but NOAA is calling for 3ft, and they usually overestimate.

I MAY be out there Thursday (my only day off till after ORC).  I haven't used my new fishfinder yet and want to try it out (learn it).  Since I do NOT like to be out there alone, you may see me paddling in close proximity.  I'll probably plan on launching after 8am and only be out for a few hours.  My boat is a blue Ocean Kayak Prowler Big Game.  Old white Toyota 4runner.  I live a few blocks from the harbor so I just stuff it in the back and hang on to the front handle.

It's my first time  at the event. I'm pumped. I've only been out once with my dad (DTS). I hope I don't get sick. I'm pretty new to the ocean but it will be fun.

Just beat your dad like normal and you will do fine!!!

Shhhh....   Don't encourage him.   >:(   I allready get out fished by him enough as it is.   ;D

I know I've asked this question before, but I can't find the answer...

Getting to Depoe Bay from the North, looks like there are 3 routes...mcminnville, salem and corvallis. Which is recommended?

That thread is in the 2011 ORC sub-forum in Events.  The recommended route in that thread was through Salem to avoid the lights/traffic in Dundee.

Don't go Mcminnville slow roads and trucks. Go thru Salem.

Depends what time you are going through. I go through Dundee often. Going through before 9:00 on weekends is usually OK. On weekdays, going down 99 through Tigard is worse than Dundee. Again, going morning is when you want to be going through. If you are going down Friday afternoon, going through Salem is probably faster. I think the slowdown through Dundee is an exaggerated problem - it does slow down there, but it is often worse in several other places on the trip.

The two times I've driven through that stop light, I literally waited 35-45 minutes.  I don't feel the problem is exaggerated.  I also remember 99 through tigard being slow on those trips as well.  After learning my lesson, I stay on ye' old I-5 all the way to Salem.

fool me once, shame on... shame on you. Fool me .... You can't get fooled again.

Salem is a safer bet, Dundee is fine if it's before 7:00 AM.

A reminder:  Everyone MUST fill out a waiver either at Chinook Bend on Friday night or at the Check-In Station at Depoe Bay before competing.  I will set-up an area near the Fire Pit at Chinook Bend Friday evening.  Saturday morning, the Check-In/Weigh-In booth will be open at 6:00AM near the park adjacent to the boat ramp parking lot.  If you do not fill out a waiver, you will not be considered as part of this NWKA event.

New Rule:  In order to ensure that everyone makes it back safely, YOU MUST STOP BY THE WEIGH IN STATION AND GET CHECKED OFF THE LIST ON YOUR RETURN (Even if you have no fish to weigh) We don't want to have to dispatch the Coast Guard because someone "forgot".

I mowed the lawn, cleaned the garage and loaded the car. Then I check the trailer lights...crap! Now it's 11 PM and I'm in troubleshooting mode. Only seeing 5 V at the connector and only two LEDs are weakly glowing. Could be a late start for me tomorrow. Was hoping to leave around 5 AM and be fishing by 9-10. Murphy, you've done it again!

By the way, I haven't reserved a tent site after Thursday night, should I be worried? Tried calling them but it went to voicemail.

Everyone needs to monitor channel 80 when transiting the hole and in the outside channel.  Outside of that I believe everyone is going to be on ch 69 for the most part.  That's usually the default channel for most kayak fisher dudes.  It's a good idea to monitor ch 16, 69 and 80 at the same time to get a good idea of what's going on around you.  If you need to hail the Coasties, you need to be on channel 16 or 80.

The USCG Auxiliary will have Vessel Examiners at the Depoe Bay Boat Ramp this coming Saturday. We will have one or two VEs at the ramp at 0530 for anyone wanting a Vessel Safety Check on their way out, and 4 or 5 VEs at the ramp from about 1330 to conduct VSCs on kayaks returning. We may also have one VE visiting Chinook Bend on Thursday PM and Friday AM for anyone wanting a VSC prior to Saturday. Larry Cox, Flotilla Commander, Flotilla 53, Depoe Bay, Oregon

IME, they can get a lil pushy about VE. It's volunteer, you do not need to do it.

The Coast Guard are our friends folks. (even the auxiliary)   As stated, you do not have to get examined but it you're following the ORC rules, you'll have no problem passing.

Biggest reason I can see for saying no is; It's a contest and time is of the essence.

His location at West Lake Union is on the docks of the lake with a floating platform to demo from. Just an amazing setup. Not to mention Kevin, the most technical Hobie support in the area. something to think about;
older membership has always looked for people who get up and get it on thier own. theres triple the membership here than there was when i joined in 08. yet only about 4 percent actively participate to any degree. what happens when that 4 percent retires, moves on or stops participating in some other way?

bsteves , zee, and spot all will tell you the same thing. when i joined, there wasnt a week went by that they didnt tell me to go fishing, get involved, make mistakes and share them. theres plenty of opportunity out there, especially for newer younger yak anglers.  dial it up a notch, go do it.
